There are 3 theories on this afaik:

1. the erroneous growth rate of Islam from the Readers Digest Almanac 1983.

2. The real growth rate, as pointed out by Inazui, due to fertility (1.7 vs 8) in Islamic countries.

3. The realisation that Islam does not fit into our world anymore is causing a wave of apostates.

We will see the effects over the next years.

My personal opinion is that many Muslims are embarrassed by the radicals of their belief and choose a more peaceful alternative.

We have to accept that as creation, there may be some things beyond our understanding. As creation, we only know what our Creator has willed for us to know.

(I don't know how it got here, but my comment above was supposed to be a response to an ignorant person who concluded to know the answers to all of Existence/Life based solely on his experience. )
