Oregon is ranked 43rd worse performing public ed but 27th in best pay!

@joe035 and how many years must one invest in higher education for a whopping 70K? most of the retired teachers i've met arn't exactly living the high life on their pensions as well, compared to retired military officers. and the money they spend is kept within communities. i do not see the logic in trying to make professionals impoverished so yokles can have a little more scratch for fishing lures...

@kennny732 If your time is worth $70,000 in the private sector it is usually based off your performance, that is untrue with teachers here. High pay poor results, because public unions buy political offices & spend millions telling voters what they want them to hear rather what they should see for themselves.
These so called govt proffessionals should be judged by their performance & results, not how long they have been employed. Those who do do & those who dont teach.

At the end she says she pays union dues. Then she says she pays $8,000 per year property taxes on her house. Much of those taxes go to the local schools which are putting morons on the street after 12th grade. So she is arguing in a circle against herself. And at $8,000 for property taxes she is in too much house and is therefore overpaid as well. No wonder the country is swirling down the crapper.

I think that was a very interesting, reasonable debate. I'm not american, but I absolutely respect a society where two people on opposite sides of the political spectrum discuss important issues in a relatively respectful way. For such a tense setting that was encouraging to see.
For myself I will usually come down on the side of libertarians against government unions that restrict options for the people they serve.

You have the ability to work your ass off for minimum wage, or you can go to college and instantly become an indentured servant, and there is no gaurantee you'll get a better job then, either. No, I'd say the "right" to money doesn't exist at all. Most people I know my age are doing pretty horrible, and the only solution I'm hearing fro the right is "don't be so lazy."
