@Voidhead Actually, I really appreciate how Stoklasa knew to let the Plinkett reviews be for a while and move onto something else. You...were born in the early 90s, weren't you? This "LoL is an acceptable way of beginning a sentence" problem your generation seems to have....well, betrays it.
At least we can rightly claim that the only ones who do that among my age group are the mentally retarded, or those who just found out about the existence of the internet within the past year. : )
You did manage proper capitalization and punctuation, though, so A for effort.
Plenty of trekkies love or at least like the movie. But naming it Star Trek wasn't just to bring them in, it also served to attract many people who are familiar with and have positive feelings for the old series but are not serious fans.
Palpatine may be an annoying bastard, but he's got one thing right: Plinkett deserves to and must be adressed as Lord Plinkett - Emperor of the galaxy of internet criticism.
I think I understand now. Nero's motivation make sense to a certain kind of people: Those who are not the optimistic rose-colored glasses crowd. See I believe that regardless of how inherently good or evil a person is, anyone is capable of anything. That sounds like a trite cliche but it's true. RLM himself once said it's generally easy to get people to follow you on some mad quest. That's why I still insist it's not really a plot hole.
Awesome as this is, if you were ever seriously considering Twilight you should really make that one happen. Anyone can say it sucks but only you can really explain why it sucks.
ST09 is pretty similar to Transformers 2007 I believe. Hear me out. Both were written by Alex Kurtz and Roberto Orci. Both pay homages to their respective series. Both are tongue-in-cheek enough for the older fans to enjoy and while it's dumbed down for the masses to swallow. Are they delicious popcorn-drenched fun? Sure, depending on your POV. Are they well-made? Sure, again depending on your POV. Are they great movies? No. Lasting? Not really. Are they nowhere near the original series? Yes.
Excuse me. Hi. Yeah, um, why wasn't I in this review? I know back in the Phantom Menace review you told me to get back in the Star Trek reviews, but this is clearly a Star Trek review. This is what you have me on here for, isn't it? To comment on blaring inaccuracies and things don't make sense at all? I had plenty of things to say about this one too. What's going on here? Was my contract terminated? Did you suddenly forget that I exist?
"Star Trek" sounds like (I haven's seen it.) a movie that is OK to like, because it has enough action, but one shouldn't like it. I doesn't sould like it lives up to the original series.
They should have gone all the way and got a X rating, by showing Kirk and Uhura in a three way with a green woman.
I liked the review, but I can't see how you can say you actually liked the film after all the problems you go into. I can't believe you gave First Contact a bad review because Picard swung around on vacuum hoses in that one scene (which I agree was a stupid scene) but then give this steaming pile of crud a good review because you like the transporter and warp drive effects.
@chromethink That's because Picard was acting completely out of character in the movies compared to the TV show, Captain Kirk on the other hand was always known for taking risks and getting in over his head with the main action.
@ramik81 I don't see how Picard was acting out of character there...yes he sat in his ready room reading ancient Greek texts once in a while, but he was also a formidable fighter when the situation called for it. And he displayed the same chip on his shoulder about the Borg in the TV series post-BOBW as he did in First Contact...
and the problems this movie has go waaaaaaaaay beyond Kirk's behavior.
"And he displayed the same chip on his shoulder about the Borg in the TV series post-BOBW as he did in First Contact..."
Um... no... he didn't. You might say First Contact happened in another timeline (I really wish he'd have adressed this issue in that timeline section), but as it stands, it is 100% irreconcilably inconsistent with his "post BOBW behavior in the series".
I didn't memorize the review of FC, but I recall him making a crack about Picard being a guy who read ancient Greek in the series and then turned into Bruce Willis for the movies, which doesn't jibe with the fact that Picard was kicking ass hand-to-hand all over the galaxy in the series. He also displayed a similar attitude toward all things Borg in the early parts of the episode "I, Borg". And I'd think having his own ship taken over by Borg would put him in an even nastier mood.
Yea, and then he changed his mind during that same episode... after having his attitude changed by direct experience and a calm mind, instead of screaming around like a psycho and throwing around with threats and insults at everyone... which the movie all blatantly ignored.
I mean, congratulations for fucking up your entire point.
As I've always been saying, that's fine with me as long as we assume it's taking place in an alternate timeline... or they just wanted to make a movie with a furious Picard and willingly sacrificed some continuity for that... but as it stands, it's awfully inconsistent with the series, and he explained that as well as it gets.
@chromethink well this seeming pile of crud is and for 90% of movie goers the only star trek film we can stand to watch without blowing out brains out of nerdy boredom
His previous ST reviews were basically just giant nitpick-fests (although brilliant ones), this is the first one where he actually provides a "fair and balanced" perspective.
@twooffour He said that ST2009 was a good movie several times. Did you even watch the review? Did you see the good-bad-good spectrum with this film placed on the far right end of the "good"?
No, he said it was an enjoyable action flick with nice characters that still suffered from a horrendous plot and commercial hollywood gimmicks to appeal to mass audiences and make more money.
He clearly gives the creators credit for implementing those tropes in an effective way, but also made clear he was judging it in the sense of "how to appeal to the masses" rather than "how to make a brilliant story".
The entire movie was basically a giant deconstruction of the film.
Maybe YOU should watch the review again, because if you seriously think he does nothing but praise the film for one hour, and worse yet, does it because it has "Star Trek" written on it (heck, he even lampshades THAT kind of reaction and how the writers dealt with it), you clearly watched it in delirium.
How can he be a ST fanboi who likes anything with ST on it... if he clearly expressed disdain for the TNG flicks and some episodes from the series?
@twooffour I never said that he endlessly praised the film. If anything, like most reviewers who say they liked it, he is very vague about what he liked and very specific about what was wrong with it. But his final verdict is that it's a good movie.
And his initial argument supporting the film's significant departure from previous Star Trek movies in tone, is basically "they weren't going to make a Star Trek movie unless it was like this, so suck up and deal." That's pure desperate fanboy.
If anyone's desparate here, that would be you trying hard to reinterpret Plinkett's stance into something it clearly isn't and couldn't be clearer about that, because you're not doing a very good job at that.
No... a fanboi would try to justify all the movie's flaws and explain away all the plot holes... in order to reach the conclusion that it's another great Trek movie that preserves the awesomeness of the franchise.
Not... spend an entire hour relentlessly nitpicking apart and...
... the plot that doesn't make sense and lampshading all the elements in the movie that have been clearly put in to appeal to mass audiences - with the conclusion that it's a fun, easily digestable action flick and "nothing more", but hey, what'd you expect from Hollywood with their desperate agenda to milk various brands for more money and appeal to the lowest common denominator?
You've clearly missed the metaphorical rape movie and his explanation of its meaning in the...
... review - because otherwise you wouldn't be here making your awfully inane accusations.
He says IF we understand all the going-ons that made the movie the way it is... in order to make more money... we might aswell suck it up for 2 hours and enjoy the fun ride, as at the end it's just a mindless entertaining Hollywood flick.
Wow, that sounds about as reasonable and far away from "desperate fanboi rant" as it possibly gets.
I also have a list. After Star Trek you should review Lost seasons 3-6 and they totally ruined Lost seasons 1&2. PS im joking but kinda serious. That would b awesome :)
its a good review, but it sucks that it doesnt look like he's going to do ep3 until the new year, i bet. he's making such a big deal building it up, he's probably making it a massive project.
You see, RLM made a fatal error when he cared about what he did and released multiple awesome reviews of things the internet didn't like in a row. The floodgates were opened and the apocalypse drew near as a wave of spam the likes of which few have ever experienced washed over his comments sections.
The review is incredible. Seriously, this guy is fucking talented. He completely defuses all fanboy blathering and makes it entertaining for a WHOLE HOUR.
LOVED the new Star Trek review. Genius as always. I can watch these reviews over and over again and wet myself laughing every time. Bless you, Plinkett!!

Did you suddenly forget that I exist?
sniper6081 1 year ago 2
"Star Trek" sounds like (I haven's seen it.) a movie that is OK to like, because it has enough action, but one shouldn't like it. I doesn't sould like it lives up to the original series.
They should have gone all the way and got a X rating, by showing Kirk and Uhura in a three way with a green woman.
charlesvan13 1 year ago
I liked the review, but I can't see how you can say you actually liked the film after all the problems you go into. I can't believe you gave First Contact a bad review because Picard swung around on vacuum hoses in that one scene (which I agree was a stupid scene) but then give this steaming pile of crud a good review because you like the transporter and warp drive effects.
chromethink 1 year ago
@chromethink That's because Picard was acting completely out of character in the movies compared to the TV show, Captain Kirk on the other hand was always known for taking risks and getting in over his head with the main action.
Anyways, you've never had a guilty pleasure?
ramik81 1 year ago
@ramik81 I don't see how Picard was acting out of character there...yes he sat in his ready room reading ancient Greek texts once in a while, but he was also a formidable fighter when the situation called for it. And he displayed the same chip on his shoulder about the Borg in the TV series post-BOBW as he did in First Contact...
and the problems this movie has go waaaaaaaaay beyond Kirk's behavior.
chromethink 1 year ago
@chromethink
Did you even watch the review?
twooffour 1 year ago
@twooffour
And I'd think having his own ship taken over by Borg would put him in an even nastier mood.
chromethink 1 year ago
@chromethink
Yea, and then he changed his mind during that same episode... after having his attitude changed by direct experience and a calm mind, instead of screaming around like a psycho and throwing around with threats and insults at everyone... which the movie all blatantly ignored.
I mean, congratulations for fucking up your entire point.
twooffour 1 year ago
@chromethink
As I've always been saying, that's fine with me as long as we assume it's taking place in an alternate timeline... or they just wanted to make a movie with a furious Picard and willingly sacrificed some continuity for that... but as it stands, it's awfully inconsistent with the series, and he explained that as well as it gets.
twooffour 1 year ago
@chromethink well this seeming pile of crud is and for 90% of movie goers the only star trek film we can stand to watch without blowing out brains out of nerdy boredom
legoindyshortround 1 year ago
@chromethink
His previous ST reviews were basically just giant nitpick-fests (although brilliant ones), this is the first one where he actually provides a "fair and balanced" perspective.
twooffour 1 year ago
@twooffour Not really. His perspective seems to be that of a fanboy who's just grateful for something that has the words "Star Trek" attached to it.
chromethink 1 year ago
@chromethink
Yea, that's why he ripped the TNG movies a new asshole, right?? And praised the shit out of 09 (hint: he didn't)?
twooffour 1 year ago
@twooffour He said that ST2009 was a good movie several times. Did you even watch the review? Did you see the good-bad-good spectrum with this film placed on the far right end of the "good"?
chromethink 1 year ago
@chromethink
The entire movie was basically a giant deconstruction of the film.
twooffour 1 year ago
@chromethink
You poor, fucking dimwit.
twooffour 1 year ago
@twooffour I never said that he endlessly praised the film. If anything, like most reviewers who say they liked it, he is very vague about what he liked and very specific about what was wrong with it. But his final verdict is that it's a good movie.
And his initial argument supporting the film's significant departure from previous Star Trek movies in tone, is basically "they weren't going to make a Star Trek movie unless it was like this, so suck up and deal." That's pure desperate fanboy.
chromethink 1 year ago
If anyone's desparate here, that would be you trying hard to reinterpret Plinkett's stance into something it clearly isn't and couldn't be clearer about that, because you're not doing a very good job at that.
No... a fanboi would try to justify all the movie's flaws and explain away all the plot holes... in order to reach the conclusion that it's another great Trek movie that preserves the awesomeness of the franchise.
Not... spend an entire hour relentlessly nitpicking apart and...
twooffour 1 year ago

... the plot that doesn't make sense and lampshading all the elements in the movie that have been clearly put in to appeal to mass audiences - with the conclusion that it's a fun, easily digestable action flick and "nothing more", but hey, what'd you expect from Hollywood with their desperate agenda to milk various brands for more money and appeal to the lowest common denominator?
You've clearly missed the metaphorical rape movie and his explanation of its meaning in the...
twooffour 1 year ago
@chromethink
... review - because otherwise you wouldn't be here making your awfully inane accusations.
