  • Man, there's not even anything interesting in there, like a paint store stir-stick epoxied into the bottom of the box, or some scripture scribbled into the wood. How did it make it over here, even with no tension. You could smuggle something in those gaps. I would rather deal with 10 Tyrolean blockless wonders than with one bass like this.

  • That is pathetic! How could anyone think that was remotely OK? Maybe if it had been filled in with epoxy resin to fill all the gaps. I think someone could hid a kilo of drugs in all those voids. OK maybe I am exaggerating, but that is not even close to lousy fit. Heel blocks are common even on a great bass, but that far up? I thought the Chinese were bad. The Am. STD restoration shown was fabulous.

  • ive seen all of your videos and am very impressed with your knowledge of the upright, i wish i had money to get a bass from you guys but my budget was only going to allow me to get a cheapo upright. keep up the good work!

  • Great vid. It's hard for a buyer to spot this problem when shopping as it is hidden. I noticed that Upton is now selling Romanian made solid wood flat backs... is this one of them? Are your Romanian basses , flat and swelled back, better than this one?

  • @forfunfirst Yes, we have been buying a few Romanian solid wood basses lately...four in fact to see how they did in our Boston showroom. They are not the same workshop as the one in this video, and we would not sell something that would tarnish our reputation, especially in a small market like Boston....but...it's impossible to know how good "craftsmanship" really is sometimes unless things are apart and you get to then see what they never intended you to see.

  • @MayfieldRandyj said it right about being able to x-ray instruments to see what is really going on.

  • I recently came across a pre-war German made plywood bass with an even worse neck fit. It was held together with a really thick layer of white glue.

  • I believe you will not be eating ground up Basses anytime in the next few hundred years.

Sad you can't get an X-ray when buying.
