She was drunk during the making of the film though - on one occasion she failed to turn up at the Palladium where a whole theatre full of extras were awaiting her - my dad was in the band.
If Judy had straightened her hair (I know not the stye then, but if she had had it longer and not in that hideous poof) she would've looked so great. Her face looks excellent, but the hair itself adds about 30 years. She's barely 40 here.
I just saw this film last night. I hadn't even known that it existed. I only found out because of the clips from it on YouTube. I was expecting a performance from Garland in her final years that was good, but perhaps not her best. I was also expecting a so-so melodramatic film of the period, and that would explain why I had never heard of it. Well, now I've seen it, and I can say that "I Could Go on Singing" is an excellent film, and Garland gave what is very clearly a BEST ACTRESS performance.
Judy's angry voice is amazing! They said she could strike fear in even the strongest man in the world and can give a Look that could freeze a person! She is MARVELOUS!
@NFitalianGuy Who are "they" who said that about Judy? She was a human being with emotions, happy, sad, angry, tender etc, etc. Judy was not squeeky clean; who is?
She did not play a "drunken" anything in the movie. I don't know why you wrote that she did; are you confusing this movie with "The Valley of the Dolls"?
An excellent scene well played by Ms. Garland. Very intense. The last few lines say it all (for me) Mr. Bogarde "He's my son, and I'm going to keep him!" Ms. Garland " There's just one thing we seem to both have forgotten...He's my son, too....I made him...." After that, there is no argument left...IMHO, the Lady wins, hands down! Everytime I watch Judy's performance of this scene, I want to stand up and applaude...This is truly a superb piece of acting by both of them. But, especially Judy!:-)
@Larry2463 In this case, Larry, the lady doesn't win. She gave up her son for her career, so his father (and his father's wife) raised him. Just because Jenny Bowman suddenly wants her son, doesn't mean she can take him. It demonstrates the huge sacrifice the performer made for her stage; that's why this movie was originally titled "The Lonely Stage."
by the time she and dirk Bogarde made this scene they were barely speaking to each other. It makes me wonder how much was real and how much was not. Let's face it, when Judy wanted someting or someone she got her way or was not to be fucked with. And in MY opinion, it is just the way it SHOULD BE!!!
@michaeljohndudley She was a hopeless romantic with lousy taste in men (or maybe there aren't all that many truly good ones out there -- I don't know). Bogarde was just another worm who wasn't strong enough for Judy. She also happened to be rather tough on her fellas -- as she was a very needy child in an adult's body!
Where do some of you get off on Dirk Bogarde? What is it with you? You need to remember: 1: the man died over ten years ago; 2: we are now in the 21st century; 3: his homosexuality was just a part of the excellent actor, author, artist, journalist and critic he was. Isn't it time to get over yourselves??
Judy's acting in this movie absolutely blew me away! It made me wonder, what are they selling? A film, or the real story of Judy Garland? But all in all, wonderful movie, and the acting was incredible. <3
I have to disagree with the person who posted this video. Judy didn't play a drunken singer she was drunk once it was before the last number of the picture. Judy sonered up and went on stage & knocked the audience dead.
I seldom comment on these things, but the description of this clip needs to be corrected.
Garland DOES NOT play "drunken concert singer." There is ONE crucial scene where her character has too much to drink. But, the theme of the movie has nothing AT ALL to do with alcoholism.
It's about a woman who gave up her illegitimate son at birth and who now wants to enter his life.
exactly..sometimes people are too lazy to stick to the facts; whether it be in real life or with reference to Judy's career, she is often referenced in connection with drink or drugs. She was neither an alcoholic or a drug addict. She depended on medication sure, she worked like a horse, and way back then there was not the awareness of side effects that certain drugs can cause. Along came Betty Ford - too late for Judy unfortunately.
@GubbioTwo Thank you for correcting the description for this film. There are so many myths around not only Judy's life, but confusion for some people about her cinematic achievements. I find it so frustrating when Judy is commented on unfairly or incorrectly, by those too lazy to research the facts. Thanks again.
Wow! What an intense scene. And Judy has the trump line at the end of it. It brings a tear to my eye everytime I watch this. How many mothers and fathers have played scenes like this, in reality, themselves. This scene really makes one think. Especially if you happen to be going through a similar situation when you see it. Again, wow!
Only this lady could do it all and do it all well - she always puts her heart and soul in all her performances. Not one bad song, bad movie or bad dance routine. Unbelievable! Just unbelievable! God Bless Judy - I know you're singing up there over the rainbow.
this movie is amazing!! i got it yesterday and i just thought that she was amazing in this movie especially in the situtiation she was in real life. i adont know how she does it. shes the best!! i just didnt get what happened at the end of the movie. :s
People always say this movie had this problem and that, but Judy nailed her role. Period. The scene at the end with these two in the emergency room will break your heart. If anyone can post that, please do.
I always thought this was supposed to be a tragic end to her career and I thought that without seeing it. But it really is a brilliant film and she is incredibly good in it. In fact it's one of her best performances.
If you're a Judy fan, you MUST see this (avail on DVD and TCM runs it occassionally as well). Judy's acting is indeed STELLAR throughout this whole movie; many brilliant scenes like this one. Her performance in this entire movie was Oscar worthy.
mikesterSTLMO is so right. I think it's a flawed movie in every way except for her performance, which I think is just riveting. So direct and unaffected, all the other actors look like they are acting, and she is very complex and real and wonderful. And she looks very beautiful and young with her natural curves. A voice like that who could act this well; she's just the national treasure of american film and entertainment for all time.
Oh, my God, this is AMAZING! The way she shouts "Oh, for God's sake, Jenny!" is incredible, and check out that snarl she gives Dick at 2:26. It gives you chills. Please, please, PLEASE post more! I love this movie!
@romantic2543 She doesn't give Dirk (sic) a "snarl", she is mirroring his expression, which might very well have been a snarl, hard to tell as he is in profile.
This film was some of her best acting in my opinion. It was raw and felt real, and the musical numbers were astounding! Thanks for posting the clip, it made me remember why I love the movie.

A legend and a superstar and yet still the most under-rated and under-appreciated performer in show business history.

England was the perfect place for Judy to hit her stride. All that British repression set her off, and BEAUTIFULLY! Bravo!
