  • Unity is "DERP" Defined! It's going to be published in the urbandictionary.

  • I fricking hate unity! Gnome was fine, perfect for older machines, especially laptops.

KDE was always a memory hog, but my machines could handle it with little trouble.

Unity seems to take longer to do similar tasks that a person could do in gnome.

They should have left gnome alone. Hey...Is Ubuntu owned by or related to YOUTUBE/GOOGLE? -Both seem to "fix" things that weren't broken!

  • @upallhours9

    haha. indeed :D

  • @21stcenturyissues

    hahahah :)

  • that shit fucked up my laptop... cant even fricken turn it on anymore...

  • @Wmerritt515

    just buy a new laptop :) :D :D

  • @Wmerritt515 Hey bro, that's not a software error there. Take it to the computer shop and maybe they can fix the circuitry. I hope they fix it! :)

    -Tyler

  • It looks like a MAC XD

  • I admit I have thought about downloading Linux and trying it out, but believe me, it would be a waste of hardware that I'm not going to be able to use for gaming, linux doesn't game, you can't listen to mp3s, you cant play blu ray discs...so really what good is what you get for free if nothing works except browse the internet.

  • @Cpillin425

Problem is Game developers don't port Most games to Linux. It's not Linux's Fault, although there are plenty of opensource games as well as a few big titles here and there that work well but Linux is not the answer to latest Gaming. Can't listen to mp3's? where the heck did you hear that garbage mate? Blu ray is hit or miss on Linux yes, not Linux's fault, But you can stream blu ray to Linux or Rip it and watch it for now but doesn't sound like Linux is for you anyways :)

  • @Linux4UnMe I didn't hear it, I've downloaded Linux before, that time it was a nightmare;I could not even install Windows because Ubuntu did something to my drive whereby I could not partition it with windows, and thus would not even let me install windows again = (

  • @Cpillin425

with some distros of Linux you have to manually install the mp3 codecs... and some you don't.

as for the partitioning problem... I have no idea what you did... I havn't had such a problem o_0 :)

  • @Cpillin425 When did you install a Linux distro then? And what distro was it?

  • @btracing I think it was 9.04 or something like that, somewhere in the 9s.

  • @Cpillin425 I game off of mine. You just need the right apps like wine, play on Linux, and virtual box. i can play blue ray, mp3's and even take music off of my ipod with out any additional apps or programs. I believe most Linux distros are for computer enthusiasts. You can make anything work on Linux, the sky is the limit. Also most computer repair places use Linux to fix windows and mac computers. Yes sometimes Linux does come with its issues but it is nothing you cant fix

  • I do have to say this is an alright operating system but I like the look of xubuntu on my netbook with Ubuntu causing problems. I like the fact it has Firefox on it. I don't like chrome it caused problems with windows xp cause of the file size and the problem it had with memory and resource hogging

  • @pschamp723

11.10 looks much better. Will upload the Beta 2 overview soon. Stay Tuned!

  • @Linux4UnMe if u install ubuntu fully, will it delete the files u had on windows xp?

  • @jayyoukillinemtv

yes, unless you have free hard drive space and install it to that......... then you will have xp and ubuntu and it won't touch your windows partitions

  • @SixFootTallMidget I think we're going to have to agree to disagree here. :) The PS3 is terrible in comparison to the 360, as its Cell GPU is broken and fragmented, with half the processing power of the Xbox 360. But that's not the point. The point is, it's all personal preference, and we're all entitled to like what we like. I do prefer Linux OS's overall, it's true, but I did have no problems whatsoever with Vista. And in my opinion, Gears of War 2 is one of the greatest games of all time. :)

  • @mysteryloser24 Just to add, it's down to the user to take care of their Xbox 360. They don't crash if you use them correctly, and don't sit on them for a millennia. I've had two 360's in my time, and I only got rid of the first one because I needed money. 6 months with a new user and it got RROD. My new 360 has no problems whatsoever, and it is one of the old ones still. Just goes to show, it's the user that breaks them, not the console. Use it wisely, nothing goes wrong.

  • @mysteryloser24

lol fail. PS3 has way more power, where do you get your info? The cell isnt even the GPU, they wanted it to be a CPU & GPU cause it had the power but instead went with keeping it as a CPU and chucking in the Nvidia GPU. The 360 has a better GPU but the CPU (Xenon) cant compete with the PS3s CPU (Cell). Just look at Uncharted 2 that came out a few years ago, flogs the 360 for all its got.

  • @mysteryloser24

And the people I know that used to have a 360 and troll me for having a PS3 now have PS3s and they dont use their 360s any more. So yeah.... Good luck with your mindset!

  • @Fingyfin

LoL I hope this is not going to turn into an Xbox vs Ps3 Flamewar.... o_0

  • @Linux4UnMe

Hope not, I have been programming for a few hours and am frustrated.... lol

  • @Fingyfin Flogs the 360? Haha, no. There are articles about it all over the internet, the Cell CPU(CPU, GPU, it's still rubbish) is cracked and fragmented and is less than half the power of the 360's. It's damaged goods. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good console, no doubt about it, I was just pointing out facts about the 360. It is down to the user to keep it working. Treat it well and nothing will go wrong. :)

  • @mysteryloser24

Clearly you look at fan boy pages for your info, reputable sources people! They maxed out the PS3 only a few years ago. Look at the dates on your fragmented information, everyone said the Xbox 360's processor was better back in 2007/8 but after the programers were able to get used to writing for the SPEs they were able to run circles around the 360s which is why PS3 has better graphics now even with a weaker GPU. Tried looking but cant find the broken Cell BE on a Google search.

  • @Fingyfin Look, this is a pointless debate. We're not going to agree, especially since you can't find the information that proves you wrong. Let's just drop and continue with our lives, yeah? Sounds like a plan to me.

  • @mysteryloser24

Well I think your making it up anyway, cant find people saying that the Cell is weaker than the Xenon. Not on any tech sites anyway, mostly saying the Cell is more powerful than the Xenon.

  • @Fingyfin I'll be perfectly honest. I couldn't give a shit if you think I'm making it up or not, I've seen the facts, and it's not my fault you don't know how to use Google Search adequately enough to find them. The fact is, Cell is dead, and I truly couldn't care less if you believe it. So sure, be an obnoxious fanboy and only believe the things that make your console sound better, that's cool. I know the 360 has issues, I don't deny it, but it's still better, the PS3 can't compete.

  • @mysteryloser24

Do you see a PS3 avatar on my account... No. Sorry but my university research skills cant find anything that you have been saying, sooooo you must be lying. Im not willing to dig five pages into Googles search pages to find what you are talking about nor anything else im trying to find FACTS about. And the ones that I did find (PS3 cell broken) were dated before the PS3 even came out. Ha Derp a derp. Your finding what your looking for like a conspiracy theorist.

  • @Fingyfin Indeed. One fool can't find the facts, therefore I must be lying. You don't even need to look hard. One thing you clearly need to do however, is some growing up. Seriously, are you 12 years old? You're sure acting like it. If you're not willing to go even 5 pages into Googles search results you can hardly call me a liar, as you're not looking properly. But like I said, I really couldn't care less. I would be grateful if you left me alone though, I'm getting bored of your inane chatter.

  • @mysteryloser24

A 12yo in university and who owns his own business.... The thing is you don't have to look far for the facts and since you seem to think drudging through Google to find them your clearly wrong. The big reasonable sites say that the Cell is stronger than the Xenon, stop being so narrow minded and read from reputable sources.

  • @Fingyfin How was I to know you were in Uni? I thought you were being sarcastic. Not the point. As I've already said, this debate is pointless. How about you go crawl back under your PS3, and I'll go play Gears 3. I'd recommend the same for you, but, you know... :)

  • @mysteryloser24

    Seeya then :)

  • @mysteryloser24

The rumor seems to have stemmed from the article done by 'The Inquirer' back in 2006 that has been proven to be false. After all the guy got the info from a guy he was sitting next to on a plane (if you read the article). Like I said before this is all dated early 2006. Try modern people with actual proof behind their claims.

  • @SixFootTallMidget I've personally never understood why people hate Vista so much... I ran Vista Business for a long time, and I've never had a single problem with it. Not once. Ever. I ditched it as soon as I could, mind, but that doesn't mean I didn't like it. xD I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 now, and I've got a USB with Porteus on it somewhere, which is a little pointless. :) I also use Windows 7 from time to time, but that's just for a few programs Ubuntu can't use even with Wine. :)

  • That Gnome side scroll bar isn't really that new. They have it in Linux Mint. I know it's in 11, which is what I had before I jumped to Ubuntu 11.04, and I think they had it in 10.10 as well. :) I find it handy, 'cause you can click the top or bottom half of the little scroll tab that appears to move up or down instead of clicking and dragging. :)

  • Wow, you really sound Australian.

  • @DementedDogStudios3

damnn... you got me :P ;)

  • How are the AMD graphics drivers?

  • lol, I just turned on the subtitle option of youtube and your speech pattern totally messes it up. very funny!

  • i like this software but, what if u want to go back to windows 7 u have to restart ur pc again with a recovery disc. Thanks!

  • Thumbs up if you don't like Unity.

  • im sorry, but can u do a tutorial how to use kde? i cant figure anything about it. i used it on arch, mint and kubuntu and i had no idea how to set everything up

  • @TeruMikami2345

what can't you figure out? You just lauch programs from the menu or add a folderview widget to your Desktop and add the icons in there.... everything else is pretty straight forward like Windows.....

  • @Linux4UnMe it just somehow looks weird to me. i can handle LXDE, XFCE, Gnome, and E17 pretty well, but omce kde comes it, im like "wtf?"

  • @TeruMikami2345

hehe, ohwell... we all have different taste... ;)

  • @Linux4UnMe well, thats true :D

  • How do I get graphics drivers for Ubuntu 11.04?

It works fine on 10.10 =/

    Thanks =P

  • @myaccount140

same way... use the built in tool (driver installation) or whatever it is called....

  • does it come with stickers? :|

  • @BelaFleckFan

lol you and your stickers idea... :S

  • I had Problems with this version of ubuntu 11.04 as I kept disconnecting from my internet and I know it was the version as the internet would still be connected to my iphone I have kept 10.10 version as I can't find any problems with it and I like the layout better as I am able to find things I have downloaded

  • will it run on my system?

    amd phem II x4 3.4ghz

    4gb ddr 2 1000mhz ram

    nvidia geforce 9600GT

    7200 rpm 1tb hdd

  • @wozzupgamer

Don't see why not. Burn a Live cd and see if it boots

  • @wozzupgamer it runs on my 5 year old ac so i dont see why not.

  • @wozzupgamer dude don't ruin your rather good setup with a shitty OS. stick with windows 7

  • @wozzupgamer Your specs are way too low dude.

  • @marcopolo3001 Wow your and idiot Those Specs are pretty NICE.

  • @JKHALIN

lol I think he was being Sarcastic

  • @JKHALIN Its called sarcasm, gumby

  • ugh I hate docks =\ this is why I want gnome so damn bad. Maybe I can adjust. I don't know.

  • @ForeverWiked

    Gnome 3 has a dock :P

    well... when you zoom out...

  • @Linux4UnMe but you don't need to use the dock. You can still use icons. In unity it doesn't seem that you can put apps on the desktop

  • @ForeverWiked

well... if you want to quickly launch applications you need the dock in gnome 3. You can't put apps on the Desktop on Gnome 3 either "by default"

  • @Linux4UnMe you can't ;___; I tried it off a Live CD and sword I put FF on the desktop

Jesus why are they forcing docks. Isn't Linux about options

  • @ForeverWiked

Well, there are many other Desktop Environment options if you don't want Unity or Gnome 3 ;)

such as Kde, Xfce, lxde etc.... No docks ;)

  • @Linux4UnMe I installed KDE on Ubuntu(so I guess it became Kubuntu) and it was such a mess. You needed these weird windows open on the desktop that linked to folders and you actually put the icons in the folders. And XFCE came with a dock when I tried a live CD of it.

Never even heard of lxde though

  • @ForeverWiked

haha yer Kde on *buntu is totally crap. It is always buggier than on default kde distros that are not ubuntu based. Xfce by default doesn't have a dock... some distros include a dock by choice with xfce

  • @ForeverWiked you didnt spend much time with the KDE then - you can remove that default box and continue to tweak to your hearts desire under system settings and selecting display. editing workspace area allows even more visual control. the KDE is still buggy IMHO, but to downright trash it without even knowing how to remove or change the default desktop GUI is not fair for others who want to give it a try.

  • @ForeverWiked

You Do not need to use Folderview Plasma Widgets... you can change your Desktop to the Classical way easy enough

  • So if you don't like Unity or Gnome 3, what are you planning on using after most distros stop supporting Gnome 2?

  • @Deliciousfruit233

    watch my latest video

  • I tried Ubuntu 11.04 and Linux Mint 11 Katya recently and I preferred the Linux Mint. Maybe that's because it seemed more familiar because I'm a windows user but even then when I tried to play a simple MP3 Ubuntu didn't and bugged me to install codecs which I said yes to but it didn't work... Linux Mint didn't ask to install any audio codecs and just played the MP3. Who knows though maybe it was because I was booting off of a memory stick.

  • @PlatypusCaper

hhmmm from what I remember ubuntu worked with video / music playback after following the prompts for codecs... but yer it is preinstalled on LinuxMint.

  • I´M NOT FUCKING UPGRADING >:(

  • @the747videoer

LOL don't blame ya. Although you could "Upgrade" to a much nicer, more polished and stable Linux Mint 11 ;)

  • Hey Im thinkin of getting Ubuntu 11.04 through like torrents or something, but I dont know if I can install it and run it on my windows 7 laptop without erasing windows 7, I dont know if you can choose which OS to boot when I turn on my laptop?? I dont wanna use a cd, I want it installed on my hard drive. Is there another version of Ubuntu you guys recommend or is this the best and most stable version????

  • @G0DofRock

You would need space on your hard drive to install it to... or to resize windows so that you make space to install ubuntu on... Yes it will detect and setup windows / ubuntu at boot... I recommend Linux MInt 11 instead of Ubuntu, it is easier to use and more stable.

I don't have any videos on how to dualboot Linux/Windows... maybe it is time I start.

  • @G0DofRock WUBI...just search for "wubi"...just what you need its like a normal installation with deinstalation option in windows....setts up everything perfekt with dualbootoption without cd...

  • i am in ubuntu 11.04 now its great product idk but for some reason my internet works alot faster

  • @herewegoall

Unity is buggy and not a finished product yet... I wouldn't call it a great release

  • @V234GL3

why Mint 10. Mint 11 is out now ;)

  • @V234GL3

nar don't ditch windows... do a dualboot of windows and linux.... when you decide you are happy with it then ditch windows... unless you like latest gaming on windows ofcoarse...... and if you do install linux go for LinuxMint 11 not Ubuntu. If you need help with Dualboot Go to my website/Forum or chatroom and we can talk you through it

  • I have a question. Does this Ubuntu OS make it easier to sync Apple products to Ubuntu? I noticed that in previous versions, it's a real pain to try and sync and I've actually never figured it out

  • @arabpimpness

hhmmmm. that is a good question... and I do not have any apple products to test this out

for you... maybe somebody else can answer this question better than I can.........

GUY'S... APPLE PRODUCTS ON LINUX.... HOW WELL DOES IT WORK? IF YOU CAN GIVE "ARABPIMPNESS" A HEADS UP THAT WILL BE GOOD. cheers

  • @Linux4UnMe lol thanks for the peer assistance there bro lol. but with all the Windows users turning to Linux every day, you'd think Apple would be on top, making sure their products and services are available to all. I seriously doubt Apple realizes how much more they'd make if they'd create Linux-friendly software. I'm just waiting on someone else (possibly android) putting Apple in their place...again lol

  • @arabpimpness

    no probs....

Yeah I wish they would. Alot of people would be happy to pay money for Professional Software even on Linux... Hell, I'de like to buy a few titles myself like GarageBand... but I won't waste the money on a Mac. Ohwell....

Yeah i'de like to See Android hit the Desktop... it is bound to happen someday...ChromeOS won't cut it

  • @epicturnip You can drag the 'System Settings' icon into the dock, that makes it easy to get to. I do think they need to improve the search function of the launcher, it won't bring up 'System Settings' no matter what keyword I use. So I had to go through all the applications and scroll down and drag it from there. This is just the first iteration of Unity...

  • I completely agree. The dash and file menu and all that stuff is a huge waste of time, and just plain awkward.

  • WINDOWS 7 BITCH!!!!!!!!

  • @ludacrisk192

    mmmm. ok

  • @ludacrisk192 Its not Windows 7!!! Its a KDE Desktop, look closer, you ....."Bitch" ;-) A real Linuxuser would have known that. So ist looks like, that YOU are the WIN Bitch?! By the way: Have you actually ever seen an original WIN 7 Desktop? XD

  • It's not "falls and folders"... it's " f EYE les and folders"

  • @jscottupton

    I like Cookies

  • How to install elegant gnome theme in ubuntu 11.04

    watch?v=tm0mgV3TcXQ

  • @theEpicTonerider

    cool. That looks nice

  • I like Unity. Releasing it now gives the developers a year to polish it before the next LTS release.

Simplicity is harder to achieve than complexity. Unity eliminates the ongoing support headache of users losing or mis-configuring multiple panels.

  • @zed91

Fair enough... we'll see how it turns out eh. I remain skeptical that the majority of ubuntu users

will be ever accept unity ;)

  • @zed91 Applications/Places/System. What's more simple than that?

  • great review

  • @blackpoolboots

    thanx

  • Excellent review. You got some good points that missed in my review.

Some people should realize "new" doesn't necessarily mean "better".

  • @necopost

    cheers man ;)

  • wow i feel like an idiot for asking this.... but... how do i install flash on the 64 bit version, i DL the package and open it with the software center, then get an error. im technically savvy and all, i can do an arch install but i cannot do this :( someone please help.

  • @hheintze1

did you install flashplugin-nonfree? Did you get it from the package manager? If not, do it. If so what is the error?

  • @Linux4UnMe yea "wrong architechture"

  • are you using arch?

  • i personally think unity is too simple and the panel bar isn't as configurable as gnome 2.32. also, the icons in the left panel are too big and cant be shrunk. too many things are fixed in ubuntu. not fitted for high-end desktop users.

  • Thank you for making this video. I liked the review, and your opinions at the end are interesting. Personally, I agree that Canonical needs more time (about a year I guess) to get where they want to be, but I think they made the right move to make it default already. This way, they will get more users trying it out, and providing valuable feedback to make the necessary improvements. Just my two cents.

  • @jrc2k

thanx for the comment mate. appreciated :)

I disagree though, Unity could be an "option" for those that are interested in testing it and providing feedback, Alot of users would be happy to participate instead of forcing it on their users who are expecting a great out of the box, quality Product experience. Now they will lose Users. The Development can be done behind the scenes, away from users who do not understand foss development and put in place when it is worthy. Agree2Disagree :)

  • @Linux4UnMe I think those users who want great out of the box experience should stay with the LTS releases. Those who want cutting edge should go with the latest. If you want a product that was developed behind the scenes, I think you might be better served by products from Redmond or Cupertino. :-) Open source development should be done in the open. Agree2Disagree, indeed. :-)

  • The scroll bars are slim as they are to save space. Altogether Unity is very good. The majority of problems people have with Unity come from not knowing a handful of tricks. Which canonical should have made available more clearly.

  • You can create launchers on the desktop via right click on desktop and choosing 'create launcher'. You can also drag an icon from the Dash (that is the black search window you start with the ubuntu button on the upper left) to the launcher bar on the left. I will automatically be kept in the launcher bar. There is also a workaround to get a self defined launcher from the desktop to the bar, you have to move it to .local/share/applications first. The top right of the Dash is a filter.

  • It would have been better if you had explained why you don't like it. "It is not my cup of tea" is clear explanation.

  • how do I get the sidebar to auto hide? it doesn't do it in edubuntu...

  • This version of Ubuntu does not look good. I thought the older one was best and will sick with that one.

  • Is there any reason why you're not using launchers in Taskbar?

  • @Reloaded211

Launchers on Taskbar? on Unity??? what do you mean?

  • @Linux4UnMe I mean KDE taskbar. It supports launchers since KDE 4.6.

  • Comment removed

  • @Linux4UnMe I think he is talking about the taskbar at the bottom of the video, but I this is the taskbar of your own os in witch you run virtualbox. I think you forgot to crop it of or something...

  • Nice Review - Thanks

  • Additional hardware does not work on my computer. Ubuntu does not respond.

  • Okay listen... Ubuntu is for everyone, and everyone are mostly idiots when it comes to computers. So you get the idiot launcher/windows button. Really easy, no terminal needed. And it looks really really slick. As in modern, which a lot of people like.

If Linux is going to compete more with the 2, Ubuntu is it. And Unity is closer than ever to achieving this. I love Unity. My dock is home, evolution, chromium, banshee. I want to launch each once? Easy... super + 1, 2, 3, 4. Unity is win guys

  • @Cambaudio

LoL well that is only your opinion.

  • @Linux4UnMe It is what it is right? Its hard to think of a better distro "normal" people would use and understand as easily as Unity. Ubuntu Natty is very easy to understand for anyone new coming in to linux. No opinion there, fact :)

  • Nice review man, Unity is looking good. Works fine on my system. I had problems in the alphas but since Beta 1 it has worked swell. On the other hand, my friend had no problems prior to the final but now Unity is not working right at all. Poor fella. Back to Arch though for me! Mmm...I love OpenBox, it makes me appreciate the simplicity when I see Unity (despite Unity seeming fairly well polished).

  • unity sucks ass,and gnome3? omg how cant you put stuff on the desktop? lol thats counter productive,im changing to kde that i hate.

  • @linuxpowerification Putting applications on the desktop is crazy/stupid since you have to move applications to get to launch those applications... when you have the launcher to put them, it's crazy to do that. You can put files there.

  • @lewiar Win+D

  • @korwinblue Errrm, you're telling me how to move your apps out of the way so you can launch apps off the desktop instead of using the launcher, or the gnome bar in classic... how is this an answer?

  • @lewiar Getting to the desktop to access files and shortcuts isn't as cumbersome as you make it out to be. What else are you going to use the desktop for? Admire a work of art?

  • @lewiar I for one prefer all my downloads go to the desktop. No messy opening download folders... or open another explorer/nautiles to drag and drop the download to it's proper location.

  • @korwinblue I agree, and he stated that the thing you cant put on the desktop is application launchers, and quite rightly so for a number of reasons... safety being one of them, not to mention that it's a throwback to Windows 3.1...

  • In short I like classic gnome, either unity or gnome3 is no good for me :(

So the is no escape, must change one way or the other, in that case I have to change my desktop environment to KDE. When gnome-panel is mature in gnome3 I might consider coming back to gnome, I'm not even gonna give unity a chance on my desktop even in my virtualbox.

  • Unity 2D will replace classic.

there are a lot of things that you can tweak in Unity. I installed a few and I installed AWN launcher to ad some extra things and than is Unity quit nice.

There are some backgrounds with the short cuts in it. Mayby something for as you are new in Unity. Most of them also work in classic mode.

  • You can set the Windows in different corners and places by using CTRL+ALT+ the Numpad keys. By using the numpad keys 4 and 6 you get the window placed on the left and right. Ant het 8 and 2 on top and bottom half. The corners are don by 1, 3, 7 and 9. 5 sets it full screen.

As you learn the short cuts than it is a very good desktop. I don't like the menu but I almost not use it.

I like the lenses that are there and are coming.

  • Another nice review. I wondered what Ubuntu 11.04 would look like. I think that they should have created a new flavor with Unity instead of abandoning Gnome. Nevertheless I prefer a lighter desktop environment like LXDE anyway. I guess I won't be using Ubuntu v11.

  • @EdWittenable I was thinking the same. Unity could of been just a customized version of Gnome 3.

  • You can tall like in KDE, just press Ctrl + Alt and for example 7 (number pad) :)

  • i love unity

  • I found a worse glitch. Visual Effects are gone. I can't enable compiz. I know they did this because unity is not a window manager but still has something to do with compiz. I don't really know. But that makes unity suck even more. I don't even like unity. I use the standard gnome thing. So do you guys have any idea, or maybe you could make a tutorial on this?

  • Very nice vid, mate.
