great video I was born in KC in 1957 now living in Az for the last 12 yrs. I can still remember my first date in 1971 at the old fairland park amusement park
Old KC -- I used to have access to all your great photos... need to make another donation :). This video is great. I lived in Overland Park from 1985 to 1995 (my parents still live there, near the Metcalf South). May I ask where the first shot of Winstead's was taken? Thanks for the memories (although I was there later, I can now piece together a little history).
It's very sad to see how all the space, how all that grass has just been paved over with parking lots, Starbucks, Walgreens, and other garbage over and over again. Hell, you have to go beyond 150th street to get any SPACE these days!
OMG!!!! Thank you so much for posting these!! I've moved from KC twice, once before high school then again about 7 years ago!! I miss it!! These pics bring back some wonderful memories for me!! I grew up there in the 70's!! Thank you!! :~) Feel free to post more! :~)
Heres 1 for everybody, the ol' Victoria Station in the River Quay 1970's era and pogo's at Metcalf & 103rd & 1 Block West and the Merry GO Round in Shawnee and ZARDA's Dairy !!
and the ol' U-TOTEM store at Johnson Drive & I-35 - & the Santa Fe Trail State Bank at 50 Hwy & Antioch, and Harkins Gas Station on Shawnee Mission Pkwy and the Best Western Motel on frontage raod behind the old K-Mart
altho NOT pictured - lets not forget the old SHAWNNE DRIVE IN on then 50 HWY 9shawnee Msn Pkwy), and the Smaks at Metcalf and Shawnne Msn Pkwy, and Rexall Drugs in Mission Kansas ! from a former JOCO Resident of 36 years !
Great video of all of the places and has OP changed WOW! white haven motel is gone smaks was THE bomb! Remember going to the Dolgin's for my first stereo. Also remembering the woolworth's at metcalf south most of their stores are gone now what a shame at that mall now........just like indian springs! dead!
Oh man thanks for the memories! at 3:20 ...I used to love that Smaks Hamburger joint! I went to the one on SM parkway and the one on Metcalf. Great burgers and shakes!
WOW! CANT BELIEVE HOW MUCH THINGS HAVE CHANGED. I HAVE LIVED IN SHAWNEE KS MY WHOLE LIFE.THIS VIDEO BRINGS BACK MEMORIES. I WISH I HAD PHOTOS OF AMC THEATRES AT OAK PARK MALL. I USED TO WORK THERE. THAT PLACE SURE HAS ALOT OF MEMORIES.WOF NEEDS TO BRING BACK THE ZINNGER, BEST RIDE EVER!!!!!!!!!!! DOES ANYONE REMEMBER STEPHENSONS RESTURANT AND APPLE ORCHARD OR FAIRYLAND PARK. MY MOM AND DAD WENT THERE WHEN THEY WERE LITTLE. WISH IT WAS STILL THERE, THANX FOR THE MEMORIES
More and more ... PLEASE! Love this. I remember going to Baskin-Robbins on summer Sunday evenings with my parents. Harzfelds was THE shop. Smaks was my favorite! AND I DO remember the longhorns at 103rd & Mission!! Thank you for this.
More and More, please! What a great job you have done. Music too! I remember going summer Sunday nights to the Baskin-Robbins at RanchMart. Also, when Metcalf South opened. Smaks was my fave back then. THANK YOU!
awesome video...actually made me a little teary eyed.Parents used to drive me to ice skating lessons all the way from Northeast kansas city to King Louie on Metcalf (must have taken forever).Love Smaks...Zambezi Zinger...the tunnel was a great few seconds to sneak a little kiss in with a boyfriend so no one could see!!!video brought back lots of memries, thank you SO VERY MUCH!!!! great job!!!please do another one!!! Celeste
I can not believe my eyes! For nearly 20 years I lived at 103rd and Metcalf. I remember when 119th and Metcalf was corn fields. My mom would take my brother and me out to the BMX track on 119th just west of Metcalf. It may have been before the tele cable building was there.
What great memories! I worked at Jones @ Metcalf South in 1976 and Glenwood Theater for Star Wars in 1977-78. And like everyone else, I LOVED the Zambezi Zinger. Thanks for sharing this!
This was great so many memories: Coachlite, Zambezi Zinger, Smaks!!! I thik Jacks or better was just up the street I loved the peanuts!!! My grandfather helped to build Coachlite and I went to Worlds of Fun opening week!!
@peterbillionaire that would be Regnier who owns ranchmart my mother went to school with that guy... he never did crap to it until last year... it still looks like crap with a bunch of froo froo stores.
THANKS for the great memories since I grew up in OP by Ranch Mart!! Family night at the Leawood theatre with my sisters in the back of Mom"s Country Squire station wagon. Old enough to remember Metcalf was a gravel road in the early 60's. Also 435 being built. We used to ride our bikes there and watch the progress. Crown Drug Store!!
Leawood Drive-In! Ranchmart! Even the Skelly gas station on the corner where we got into a car accident (fender bender). Do you remember the Longhorn cows at 103rd and Mission Rd?
Thank you, that was very nice work. I probably have dozens more that I could add. However, you should probably change your description to read, "Overland Park, Leawood, KS and Kansas City, MO. (there were no shots of Kansas City, KS.) Again, wonderful slide show.
I remember getting lost in the Jones Store at Metcalf South when I was very young... wish there had been a pic of that wacky fountain in the middle of the mall, with all the staggered concrete slabs like a maze through the water feature there.
Totally agree about the Zambezi Zinger. Awesome ride that scared the crap out of my little brother! Thanks for the memories!
The Glenwood was the only theater in KC that showed Star Wars when it premiered in 1977.
