If I had a team, he'd be on it. He was known as the "quiet leader" in the nhl, but when he said somthing everyone opened up their ears, no one tuned him out.
A very good player-NOT great as his career, like many NHL veterans, was elongated only due to a greedy NHL expansion. Without it, he would have retired, been traded or cut ten years ago. A terrible autograph signer on the road.
Messier was amazing, but unless youre from Detroit and grew up with the team, you cant understand what Steve really meant to us for 23 years. Not only playing-wise but what he did for the team and the game. An inspiration for all of us, we got to see it firsthand. Watching him his whole career and how he handled himself as a selfless leader makes him a legend. And for how bad the team was when he got here hes truly a cornerstone and we have nothing but appreciation for what hes done.
Excellent, NOT great, player who like many players lasted this long only due to NHL expansion. Otherwise he would have been gone 10 years ago. Horrible autograph signer on the road and definately not an NHL goodwill ambassador.
Chode, I know it was emotional, but cmon. Yzerman is not the best all around player. Gordie Howe, from your own organization, was better. And Mark Messier for our generation was better all around in his prime.
We've been so fortunate in Detroit to have classy sports stars, but there will NEVER be another Stevie Y. I've been lucky enough to watch him from the seats for 23 years, and this night was simply magical. We already miss you, Stevie. Thanks for everything!
I was at that game...A tear jerker. Stevie Y was hands down the greatest player to lace them. I'm not saying he passed better than gretzky or had the shot of ray bourque but he was the best all around player...no questions asked, hands down.
Even though I am a die hard Blues fan, I can't help but love Staevie Y. He has caused me so much heartbreak (the game 7, double OT winner past Casey comes to mind) but he is just too great to hate. He represents all that is great in the sport, and is the # 1 captain in history to me. Thanks for the memories (good and bad), and you will be missed Stevie.
from a hockey player of his great stature, you might expect a speech about his troubles, how grateful he was to his friends and family, but yzerman exceeds this, and thanks his teammates, his mentors, his fans, for all they've done for him. he himself personifies the word captain and all that it stands for.
DeathEndsFun, do you even realize what kind of leader Stevie Y was? Stevie didn't want his number retired in that kind of fashion..as much as he fucking deserved it. Did you even LISTEN to his speech?
There will never be a hockey player like Steve Yzerman. He never takes credit for his accomplishments. He has the greatest heart and can take the most pain and still deliver a game winner.
My favorite hockey player ever if he would of started his career as early as Gretzky he would have 1000 goals and over 2000 points in the NHL.
Steve Yzerman is the third best player to play the game behind Gordie Howe, and Wayne Gretzky... That says alot that two of the top three players in NHL History were Red Wings... Hockeytown Forever!
I'm a HUGE Wings fan (i live near detroit), and watching that last night... I cried soooo much! We'll miss you Stevie, thanks for everything! You are, simply the best.
does anybody know what those songs were? want to get them now.
Did any of u guys hear about how he is going to have a street renamed after him near joe louis arena?! and he got the keys to the city and January 13 2007 is going to be Steve Yzerman day in Michigan! they were gonna make it yesterday, but they didnt because of Gerald Ford's death.
Before the Habs fans come on and start saying Koivu is the greatest Captain in History, because he survived cancer and also they lost 4 straight to Carolina in the playoffs with his absence...I agree with all who say Stevie Y is the greatest captains of all time. He is a selfless player and a class act. Definately Top 10 Greatest players of all time to me.
Talk about Bring-Your-Daughter-To-Work Day. Wonder if his daughters really soaked in the sight that was his office--surrounded by ravenous Red Wings fans amid spotlights and booming rock music. The two younger ones looked petrified.
I laughed when I saw how they didn't seem to be amused at all. Even the oldest daughter, who is so adorable, didn't smile. But, even with the deadpan looks this tribute was SO fitting. Stevie is a legend.
yah i know, his older daughter isabella knew what was going on, but the younger ones looked like they had no idea what was happening. I know i would be scared/ excited, but they might have not even knew how important of an event that was
Congratulations Steve, you deserve every moment of it.
On a side note, almost every time I see hockey players with their families, they have all daughters. Why can't there be a little Yzerman, Andreychuk, etc. to carry on the name?
That is kinda weird, my mother and I were talking about that when we were watching the ceremony, cuz when they were walking for a second my mom thought Lisa looked pregnant, (it was just the lighting) and i was like "yah, i am sure he probably wants a boy!"
Then he'd have to come back to win another cup for him to pose with it. He won the third cup for his youngest daughter. Also, The second song was Jesus Jone's "Right Here Right Now".
Good old Steve Yzerman he is a god and a legend and the best Capt. of all time! what a guy and such greatness in his leadership and hockey skill and all those times of highs and injury lows! he will always be remembered as a true legend! and player of the game!
Thank you for posting this! After leaving Detroit for PHX, you realize how little hockey coverage there is out there. I tried so hard to find this last night, and all I can find on ESPN this morning is the Nick Saban press conference. How sad. All athletes should strive to be half the man that Stevie is. Thank you again for posting this, and always, thank you Stevie.
in response to what darknezz999 said: I think Stevie Y was a great player and leader and is one of the all time greats but the greatest captain in NHL history? I think you are forgetting about #11 Mark Messier who not only is the best captain in the history of the NHL but he is said to be the greatest captain in team sports.
messier the greatest captain in sports history and the NHL? you seem to be forgetting other players like Mario Lemieux and Scott Stevens. well to give credit where credit's due he did win 6 stanley cups, but only 1 with the rangers, and his first 4 with the Oilers gretzky was the captain, while Stevie Y won all his cups with the red wings, all in a 7 year span. So in closing, stevie Y is one of the greatest players to ever captain his team to championship glory, congrats to him
AMEN! Yzerman was an amazing leader who showed commitment and loyalty to play with a team that had many "lean" years. When all the other stars jumped from team to team to find their glory, Yzerman stuck it out in Detroit. That shows a loyalty and humility we don't see in sports, ever. This is what makes Yzerman one of the greatest. Lead by example.
You sir said the most stupid thing of the year 2007 and the year has just started. I think you forgot one thing and it's the last 7 seasons with Messier as a captain, the Rangers/Canucks MISSED THE PLAYOFFS while Yzerman missed the playoffs only ONCE and as a captain, the wings missed the playoffs never again so you should think about it before saying some stupids crap just like that; it will be a great appreciation for every wings fan.
This video brings tears to my eyes. Yzerman was the best captain in NHL history and probably will the best ever. I find it strange to see a Red Wings team without Detroit Yzerman since he was captain for as long as I am alive (20 years).
A NHL fan I watched #19 score many goals most memorable was his goal past Grant Fuhr in the playoffs. Yzerman was always a "gamer" who conducted himself with class, both on and off the ice. May his career be cherished and his legacy legendary. Congrats to Steve!
same here man.

Messier was great no doubt, but Yzerman didn't have Gretzky,Kurri, Anderson, riding shot gun with him
through his prime. Steve had some sad Wings teams in
the beginning, eventually becoming a scoring force, then
Scotty Bowman improved his game to become a 3 time
champion! Steve Yzerman, class, off the ice and on.
