I live in sweden and have 6 weeks of payed vaycay... unfortunately I don't get paid for over time and ended up working 230 hours over time in 2011.. A very common form of employmeny agreement in sweden is "By law" 5 weeks but we recieve 5 extra days instead of payed overtime..
Good thing that ATL "working hours code" says that you cannot work than more than 150 hours overtime so I ended up recieving extra payed vaycation for every hour I worked overtime above those 150 hours....
@Baxtexx This research was done to find out what makes people happy. Does it say anything about a correlation between unemployment and happiness? No. What we do know is that people are really unsatisfied and unhappy when they have no work. And where do the government get the money for the welfare-system if very few are working? Another thing, if you registered as unable to work for health reasons or something else,- you are not registered as unemployed.
@Baxtexx us has a higher unemployment rate than sweden - thats despite the fact that the us probably undercounts as it doesnt record long term unemployed properly. You need to understand that supply side factors are not the only causes of unemployment - demand side factors are also important - read some Keynes and get yourself educated on basic macroeconomics
@Baxtexx You mean the welfare? I'm currently unemployed and I live with my parents, I could get an apartment and money for it by the government. So yeah, it's possible to not have to work at all in Sweden, but it doesn't mean you will have money to do anything fun and in order to buy a new television you'd have to save up money for a couple of months, whereas if you had a job and that same studio apartment you could buy a new TV with the next paycheck.
@Baxtexx So it's very possible to live in Sweden and not have to work at all. (At least in Borlänge) Doesn't mean it's better. In fact, I'd rather work and have an actual paycheck so I can buy stuff instead of being concerned with my budget all the time. So I need to use that welfare money for food, hygiene products, bills, toilet paper et cetera and be happy about what little I have left and plan it out so I can manage until the next welfare can be applied for.

Dun know where you work etc. But as far as I know, you are entitled 5 weeks vacation, by law(in sweden). There are however some that have more vacation then 5 weeks. Working for the government (Statsanställd, typ Banverket eller Kronan) will grant you up to 7 weeks. Working for a county (landstings anställd) will give you somewhat over 6 weeks after reaching 40 years of age.

True, but I think they set what they call a "working week" is differently.
If you have a 43h-45h week as the "standard" then we get about additional day off per working week when you compair that to a standard Swedish workingh week. If you see that as a holiday than that totals 10 weeks (a 5 working days). If we have 1/2 a day "off" per "international working week" than that will totals 5 weeks holidays which you then combine with 5 weeks actual holidays. OK?
We could even build up a world in which every men has to work only 4 hours and all get as much as they want... With an libertarian-democratic Socialism and a decentralistic planned economy with socialized banks and monopolistic groups on one side and the end of exploitation of men by men. We can make a world in which everyone is happy.

@rotvold Don't forget to count the two weeks over christmas, other holidays and such. I do believe that the hours adds up. You can also save one week per year for up to five years, giving you five extra weeks on top of the ordinary weeks for that fifth year. Most of us just take out everything we can every year tho'. My point is: We could not have had a socialized health care system if the US did not have a free market based one.
Thanks to innovation (mostly by businesses that seek a profit) health care was improving and cheap, and we had the funds to import it. Now that the US is destroying its free market based health care everything goes up in price.
We are now forced to implement some market forces to keep the costs in check. This creates expected problems like fraud.

Our exports are insane for such a small country. We got a free ride because of innovation in health care in the US.Now that the US is wrecking their health care system, it is getting painfully obvious that we can't afford our health care system anymore. Introducing a socialized health care in the US would only drive up the costs.

In Scandinavia we have the best health care systems in the world, for free. And free libraries, free education (elementary school, jr. and sr. high school, vocational school, university of applied sciences, university, all free, and the first four with free food).
@IronHorse4642 "Arbetsgivaravgiften" pays on average for mid income 50% of your paycheck as taxes. Then you have "Kommunalskatt" thats around 30%. Last but not least you have "Moms" on all purchases thats on 25%. So if you start whit 15 000kr, after taxes you have 7 000kr. And on that you pay 1 400kr on moms. You end up whit 5600kr in the end and thats around 63% taxes. So to correct myself. 63%.

On income over 383 000 SEK/year, you also pay 20% state tax and on income above 548 300 SEK/year you pay an additional 5% state tax. To even approach the nominal tax rates however you have to earn a shitload of money.

@Baxtexx This research was done to find out what makes people happy. Does it say anything about a correlation between unemployment and happiness? No. What we do know is that people are really unsatisfied and unhappy when they have no work. And where do the government get the money for the welfare-system if very few are working? Another thing, if you registered as unable to work for health reasons or something else,- you are not registered as unemployed.

@Baxtexx us has a higher unemployment rate than sweden - thats despite the fact that the us probably undercounts as it doesnt record long term unemployed properly. You need to understand that supply side factors are not the only causes of unemployment - demand side factors are also important - read some Keynes and get yourself educated on basic macroeconomics

@Baxtexx You mean the welfare? I'm currently unemployed and I live with my parents, I could get an apartment and money for it by the government. So yeah, it's possible to not have to work at all in Sweden, but it doesn't mean you will have money to do anything fun and in order to buy a new television you'd have to save up money for a couple of months, whereas if you had a job and that same studio apartment you could buy a new TV with the next paycheck.

@Baxtexx So it's very possible to live in Sweden and not have to work at all. (At least in Borlänge) Doesn't mean it's better. In fact, I'd rather work and have an actual paycheck so I can buy stuff instead of being concerned with my budget all the time. So I need to use that welfare money for food, hygiene products, bills, toilet paper et cetera and be happy about what little I have left and plan it out so I can manage until the next welfare can be applied for.

Dun know where you work etc. But as far as I know, you are entitled 5 weeks vacation, by law(in sweden). There are however some that have more vacation then 5 weeks. Working for the government (Statsanställd, typ Banverket eller Kronan) will grant you up to 7 weeks. Working for a county (landstings anställd) will give you somewhat over 6 weeks after reaching 40 years of age.
But by law, 5 weeks.

True, but I think they set what they call a "working week" is differently.
If you have a 43h-45h week as the "standard" then we get about additional day off per working week when you compair that to a standard Swedish workingh week. If you see that as a holiday than that totals 10 weeks (a 5 working days). If we have 1/2 a day "off" per "international working week" than that will totals 5 weeks holidays which you then combine with 5 weeks actual holidays. OK?

You cant take from the rich and give it to the poor cuse that wont create jobs, instead we take alittle more from the rich and instead tax on consumption.
So the more you buy the more money the state gets.
I belive our consumption tax is around 25%.
So yeah in a way we do tax the rich but not in a hurtfull way.

@SpisadKoTunga your income tax is 59%, ours is 35% max only people making more than $250,000 per year pay anything close to this,,,,people that make $100,000 only pay around 22%, I know in countries like Netherlands and Germany this is considered a huge wage and taxes are paid around 35-40% or more,,,I think people making $100,000 should pay around 30% or more.....also, in the USA people like Warren Buffett...pay only 21%....he made $1,000,000,000 last year alone!!!!!!!

@rotvold Don't forget to count the two weeks over christmas, other holidays and such. I do believe that the hours adds up. You can also save one week per year for up to five years, giving you five extra weeks on top of the ordinary weeks for that fifth year. Most of us just take out everything we can every year tho'. More fun to burn than to save, as always. ^_^

DUTCH POPULATION IS AGING.
The Netherlands has seen increasing immigration.
16.4% of the total births in 2003 were to parents of non-European origin, although they account for only 12.4% of the population in the 25-34 age group.
For example, 3.8% of the births were ethnic Moroccan, although they were only 2.26% of the 25-34 age group.
Respective figures were 3.27% and 3.0% for Turks.

My point is: We could not have had a socialized health care system if the US did not have a free market based one.
Thanks to innovation (mostly by businesses that seek a profit) health care was improving and cheap, and we had the funds to import it. Now that the US is destroying its free market based health care everything goes up in price.
We are now forced to implement some market forces to keep the costs in check. This creates expected problems like fraud.

He makes some good points here but he does not understand that my country (The Netherlands) can pay for their socialized health care because of free market capitalism. Our exports are insane for such a small country. We got a free ride because of innovation in health care in the US.Now that the US is wrecking their health care system, it is getting painfully obvious that we can't afford our health care system anymore. Introducing a socialized health care in the US would only drive up the costs.

@tyskbulle First of all, the income tax is progressive. And WTF is that 20% + 30 % = 50 % ??? Cigarette prices are 50% tax here, so does that mean that the rest of someones money is spent on cigarettes.
In Scandinavia we have the best health care systems in the world, for free. And free libraries, free education (elementary school, jr. and sr. high school, vocational school, university of applied sciences, university, all free, and the first four with free food).

@IronHorse4642 "Arbetsgivaravgiften" pays on average for mid income 50% of your paycheck as taxes. Then you have "Kommunalskatt" thats around 30%. Last but not least you have "Moms" on all purchases thats on 25%. So if you start whit 15 000kr, after taxes you have 7 000kr. And on that you pay 1 400kr on moms. You end up whit 5600kr in the end and thats around 63% taxes. So to correct myself. 63%.

@tyskbulle Arbetsgivaravgiften (which is a tax on employers, not employees) is 30% of the income, and pays for things that in many countries would be something either you or your employer pay for regardless, your pension and health insurance are the two major parts of the 30%. It also pays for parental leave insurance, unemployment insurance, workers compensation insurance, etc.

@tyskbulle Also, while the nominal kommunalskatt tax rate is around 30% (it varies slightly between the 290 communes of Sweden), if you only earn 15000 SEK/month (a very low salary in Sweden), you actually only pay 2826 SEK/month, or 18.84% if the nominal rate is 30%.
On income over 383 000 SEK/year, you also pay 20% state tax and on income above 548 300 SEK/year you pay an additional 5% state tax. To even approach the nominal tax rates however you have to earn a shitload of money.

The filosofy is that everyone gets the best chance to have a happy life, not a welthy life. I love this system, I dont need 1000000000 dollars a year.
