I think the two top comments are awesome. I have read the book. It's the most interesting and intriguing book I've read. Your work will always have my support.
Just knowing about the Exit Bag with helium gives me a peace of mind: knowing that I could end this all if it all becomes unbearable. So, it is a sort of narcotic: gives strength to go another mile, to live another day, because a person has everything ready and can use it if a need arises. "And I can take or leave it if I please": give a person a sense of control despite the fact that life is totally out of control due to pain or suffering.

Many people are not capable of killing themselves due to psychological aspects- but would like to be dead. It is terrible that those people can't have assisted suicide. Let's say I am healthy but want to die for some reasons. Is doing it by myself the only option? Many people have no choice and try to kill themselves in bloody ways . When unsuccessful they are badly hurt. Terrible! Why I can't decide when I want to die, how etc? Sorry for mistakes but I learn English as a second language.
I know everyone can make their own choices, but I just cant agree with this. I know I really don't have the right to speak on this since I have never been faced with this situation, but its sad to me. Maybe Im selfish. I couldnt see my self helping someone I love kill theirself :(
@prymetyme226 Indeed it would be hard for anyone to imagine helping someone they love die-but this isn't the point - the issue isn't how you feel about helping your loved one die.
We never know what will happen in life, but in the awful eventuality of yourself or someone you love being in pain, without hope of relief ever-the issue is about at the least having the right to choose to die when you wish . Wouldn't you prefer to see you loved one die with peace, without suffering and as THEY wish?
I do wish I knew the comination of drugs that could bring me peace as well as anyone out there who suffers either pysically or emotioally. Jane was luck to have a supportive and loving companion. Marriage vows do say, "In sickness or in health, till death do us part."
I see this as a true story of love and giving. My own personal plan is in place and I don't know who will help me if I have a stroke or some other incapacitating circumstances before I can carry it out. This may lead me to follow my plan earlier than necessary. It's still preferable to me.
I would like to get others opinions on whether or not people diagnosed with AIDS should be given the choice to end their own lives in a safe way. People are living longer with HIV/AIDS but he life they lead is sometimes not much of a life. I wonder if someone diagnosed with it should be given the option from the begining. Instead of saying "here take these pills or die a painful death" people could have a choice to die peacefully.
Governments, doctors, politicians, the clergy of all belief systems and all manner of control freaky dickheads think they know what's best for us. They don't. It's been the same since the dawn of civilization and probably before. They even want to control how and when we die. LOL. Every last one of 'em can kiss my ass. Thank you Derek for your very fine work and real humanity.
Derrick, Thank you for sharing your experiences and continuing to be at the forefront of this issue.
I became a member of Hemlock from the time I learned of it and am glad you have continued to inform people of the choices that *should* be available to anyone who wishes a choice. I hated seeing Hemlock go away =( but glad you have kept up the fight.
I had the book for years in my top drawer, I can't find it now, may be on the book shelf or I let it go. I so wish governments and religions, insurance companies and people realize they do not own our bodies. and allow us to make our own choices.
Comments here show what Derek Humphry knows: most people would rather die with dignity rather than in dehumanizing conditions that prolong suffering on both themselves and their loved ones.
When the world's religions have been reformed in light of human rights, and planned suicide is legal, this decent, lovely man's legacy will shine.
We are all capable of activism in our own way once we realize the personal is political.
Hospice helps many, does not address everyone's unique needs.
The comments here confirm what this pioneer of justice has always contended: most people would choose a death with dignity rather than face their end in dehumanizing suffering, for themselves and their loved ones.
When the world's religions have been reformed in consideration of human rights, and voluntary suicide is finally legal and free, this decent, lovely man's legacy will shine.
All of us can find a way to be activists in our own way, when we realize the personal is political.
Ok, when my I lost my first dog I made the decision to choose euthanasia, because I couldn't bare to see her suffering from seizures. But to humans, this is just fucked.
try researching an exit bax or death by aproxia its much more efficient however :paying attention to procedure and details is a must for a peacefull death...Abortion was once illegal and many women suffered by doing it on their own or by untrained physicians this,as well, must be made legal and controlled as is abortion, for our society ever to be a truely humane society.we give mass murderers a peaceful death but refuse it to an 80 yr old mother of 4 dying slowly rotting away from cancer???
The source of all human power is control over human beings. To that end, the government must control the process that begins life and the process that ends life. So, sex and death are highly regulated. Until humans are free of their exploiters, that is the way it will be.
Everbody has the right to be the Captain of there Own Ship.
It's to bad that society is not really free, because of the goverment that get in the way of poeples right to suicide to stop the suffering. POEPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO STOP THE SUFFERING IN THERE LIVES, BUT THE GOVERMENT HAS NOT THE RIGHT TO STOP IT IN ANYWAY SHAPE AND FORM.
I think as we have a growing ageing population and fewer younger people to care for them, it may well become necessary to allow euthanasia for those who want it in order to continue good quality care for those who still feel life has a lot left to give them.
not that i'm going to say your wrong but i just dont see it in the same way as all of you. i know that towards the end of someones life they can be in terrible pain but still its a persons life it just does not seem right in my eyes.
You can go ahead and say suicide is wrong, and encourage them to continue to live their life
But if you encourage legislative powers to FORCE someone to live, who doesn't want to live (in general, but especially concerning those in Terminal Pain)
Allowing a person to die with dignity .... What a beautiful thing .... It's showing love and compassion .... It is not murder .... It is not a sin .... Jesus exemplified mercy and loving kindness .... God Bless those who have the courage to assist suffering souls near death.
I think what this group is doing is WONDERFUL - Helping those die with dignity. I've contributed to the Final Exit Website and will likely use there services someday as my disease progresses past the point of managable. Thank you so much
I have to say that I know through heartfelt experience that when you are dying, you are DYING and there is nothing anyone can do about it except show compassion. According to law, what Derek did was murder, but to him and his wife it was compassion.
Dying can be an agonizing process that should be hastened, when it is the will of the dying individual. It is not suicide to bring the dying process to an end.
I have lost two sons to two terminal illnesses. Dr. Kevorkian helped my first dying son.
to all who watches this, everybody needs to realize that final exit is not teaching to commit suicide. final exit is an ending to human suffering, those with uncurable diseases. final exit is not for those who have nothing to live for, not for those who had lost their parents, dog ran away, or had gotten broken with by girl/boyfriend. there is a difference between suicide and ending your life with the help and support of final exit. just like there is a difference between depression and cancer.
If you provide the means for someone to end their own life then by law you are guilty of the crime of Accessory to a Murder, hence why FE is in trouble in Chicago. Not to mention the ethics or lack thereof involved. Want to argue the point about accessory, I would suggest actually looking up what accessory to murder is.
Suicide is exercising one's right to end life on their own terms instead of those of the world, a world that can be very cruel. Living with extreme pain is not truly living. If suicide were more acceptable as a real and valid solution to a troubled life, it may come out of the shadows. If potential suicides could actually discuss their plans with loved ones openly without fear of being put into mental wards, perhaps many of them would be talked out of it.
You are so right konradaccess. Fear of ending one's life is tremendous enough; the added fear of being sectioned against one's will for merely mentioning feelings is truly disastruous. I really hope the law changes one day... at this point that law puts serious limitations on the use of 'free society'.
I find it so sad that our lawmakers so often seem to be out of touch with public opinion. Most adults are fully competent to make decisions for themselves and never more so when faced with terrible pain and suffering. It's time the law stopped treating people like minors. I find it incredible that the State can ask a person to die for their country in a war but not to give that same person autonomy over their own life and death decisions when it comes to personal suffering.
Please, if you have a history of depression, do not do what my mother did to me and and my family. We are all struggling to stay alive. We are in hellEvery day is unimaginable pain. It never ends. There is no closure. Only devastation. It hurts. It hurts. If you are suicidal, work with your family. There can be NO death with dignity if family are not involved. It will crush them and all your pain will still be here. REACH OUT. Mr. Humphrey got that gift from Jane, and it made all the difference.
I think that euthanasia centres should be legal in the UK.I have no one that I know that needs to use them. but I do agree with them.I feel that it should be the decision of 3 doctors no more no less. So there is always a deciding rule. But I dont condone taking ur own life for someone to find u lying there. Its not fair on the person to find u.If u are just committing suicide to end ur life because you dont like it any more I would say seek help thru a doctor and work ur problem out.
Thank you very much, Mr. Humphrey.
