Jap is a contraction of Japanese, it may of been used with a racist connotation in the United States, but I have never heard it used as such in Britain.
Likewise 'Brit' is a contract of British, and we refer to ourselves as 'Brits' often.

Correct. Only the first one is racist. Abbreviating is not what causes something to become racist. A term becomes racist when it is, through natural use, used in a prejorative and hatful manner the majority of the time.
In the case of the J word, it became racist when people around the world used it that way. Most young people don't know enough about the early 20th century to know how the J word was used back then, so they mistakenly think its an innocent coincidental abbreviation.

When I traveled Aurtralia about 7 years ago, I tried Kangaroo meat. It was pretty good, a bit smelly though. At least, much better than lamb.
I also tried crocodile meat. It was okay. No smells, less taste, interesting texture.

I went to the website of the SundayMail, and searched articles with each word; "jap" and "japanese". You can find "jap" is used only in headline of the WHALING article.
I could see other articles concerning Japanese; "Japanese can cut in England","The Japanese Diver".
So they can use "Japanese", as usual. In other words, they used that word to blame Japanese whaling, absolutely.

Jap is a racist term by the way. It gained that connotation during World War 2 since it was widely employed by the Allies as a racial slur.
Prior to that time perhaps it is simply a short hand term but I guess now it should be considered racist.

Now for your miss-leading New York Times reference: most of the references were during and prior to WW2. A lot were about J.A.P. which in the USA stands for Jewish American Princes. The others popped up as part of the word JAPAN. I think I just heard a bubble burst.

I think in context the term "Jap" is fine. These people to whom it refers are killers. They don't deserve better or a more "endearing" term.
They murder Sea Mammals for profit. This guy loves them and their actions. He condones the killing 100% by defending their actions against the few who choose to try and stop it.
This guys loves that Whales die, he enjoys watching Dolphins getting killed. He defends the slaughter and wants nothing more than the Oceans be free of these glorious Mammals.

Japan is unique counry and very differnt in culture from other countries. Japan is a country of conformity. We Japanese communicate with each other without talking a lot.
In worse, Japanese are not good at speaking English. Therefore, Japanese feel tired to communicate with or look after "Gaijin". lol

UK: Eleven-hundred-years history of its Kingdom.
Japan: 2000-years tradition of Imperial Japan.

I should add some good points of UK.
(i) Beautiful scenery of London. Traditional building are very nice, it is more beautiful than Japanese buildings.
(ii) European arts: ballet, opera, musicals, classical music, museums, and elegant horse race culture.
(iii) Relaxed life style.
(iV) Culture of dialogue and discussion.

Most of British don't know awesomeness of East Asia. Most of British are just blind, except for some elites who truely educated.
Most of British have been sleeping since after WWII.
I respect British tradition, but people just stick to it and don't have much in their inside. It's sad.

I really understood racism in the UK since after I started to live in UK. Funny thing is that British look down on Japan despite that most of stuff in the UK are rubbish (service, commodity, infra-structure, food).
I think "Made in UK" is worse than "Made in China".
