you have some very nice pics of the band .kudos.really fine:) saw a clone band of them in Martha's Vinyard Mass. They were channelling B52's I swear.good time.r.
@RayRoark2009 During the late 70s when this song was recorded, The B52s and a lot of other bands were into reviving styles of the 60s. "Dance This Mess Around" has a sort of early 60s sound and references several songs from the early to mid-60s: "Stop In the Name of Love" by the Supremes (1965), "Land of a Thousand Dances" by Chris Kenner (1962) done by Wilson Pickett (1966), and "Hippy Hippy Shake" by Chan Romero (1959) done by The Beatles (1963). It even mentions a 60s product: Shake-n-Bake.
@colibri1 Damn, Colibri1, I just noticed your comments and I just asked a questrion on this very exact same topic. I couldn't quite figure out it's source. : )
@Khultan Glad I could help. Their first two albums were at the time recognized as sort of early 60s kitsch. Check out the first Rolling Stone album review of their first LP; it goes on and on about the obvious influence of 1960s beach party films like "Beach Blanket Bingo." Their look at the time was from the early 60s, too, explicitly: bouffant hairdos, geometric graphics, etc. And they weren't the only ones: The Go Go's, The Rezilloes, tutone ska, the skinny ties - all early 60s influenced.
@colibri1 Although, I became familiar with the B-52s sometime around 1981, 1982 and never knew they went back to the late 70s the other groups you mentioned, I prefer the B-52s. Yeah, I REALLY love the 60s era music and scene. Thank you, Colibri1. : )
Post script. Funny how things appear to be different yet are the same.In a span of a generation recall two similar parties ,each with hip supercools in various states of mutual undress on Friday nights ,black lights & the best grass / other enhancements with one song that just kept played over & over. The fall 1969 's party had Led Zeppelin " Dazed and Confused' while the orgy in 1980 had B52's Dance this Mess Around. Just wandered through the first party & the second one? Different story.
ps. I really do not care for any reply from the original members - and to if you are not part of the original group, I certainly do not give a shit about your opinion
Hmm, I'm 20 and I'm a BIG B-52's fan. Dancing has gone downhill since the days that these guys were topping the charts. People don't have fun anymore, they're just really concerned with looking cool in case one of those bullshit club photographers is around.
They do all 16 dances. Hahahaha. I was a contempory of these guys, somebody younger tell me if anything has changed? Like do you dudes have more than 16? Hahahaha
way, way too old (like 58). Saw them live a couple times, last time was 1983 "US Festival", San Bernadino(wozniac, flush with cash from Apple). A Rock Lobster, so to speak |:-)>
B52s played in the labor day 1982 US Festival between Oingo Boingo and Talking Heads, who were followed by The Police. Great time. I worked the festival in 83 at the VFW concession stand and got all 3 days for Freeeeeeee...yes
reminds me of surfing in Santa Cruz summer of '82. Used to think the lyrics were "Why dont you dance wiht me? I'm not no little black girl.. Just a lil black girl".
I think the Bs, need to do a tribute song to Ricky. I know that "Dirty Back Roads" has a reference to him and the "Satelites" album is a tribute album to him but a song...if they could do one for Debbie from Blondie, there should be one for him. Just thinking outloud....
