I've just been reading about this in my book on China. 239 ft (71 m) Dafo/Great Buddha of Lingyun Hill, in Southern China, the idea of sculptor monk Haitong, started AD 713, completed 803, to safeguard passing boats, at dangerous confluence of Min, Dadu and Qinyi rivers. Haitong lived in a cave behind the Buddha's head, apparently gouged his eyes out to prove his sincerity when threatened with being blinded by an official wanting a cut of the funds raised.
