I've been studying the conflict throughout the years, and I believe there was no chance of succeding with the peace negotiations when the tamils killed off those who wanted it the most, and the sinhalese government didn't bother to coorporate on a high enough scale.

Sinhalese nationalists were the first to kill anyone, the governement refused to prosecute them and after decades of persecution and injustice the tamil tigers emerged and also began killing people who wanted peace and reconciliation. Some Sinhalese leaders, such as this mans cousin Chandrika, did use diplomacy and achieve peace but they only stayed in office for a short time before a genocidal war monger took power and destroyed it all.

I think the LTTE may be the lesser of 2 evils but their seperatist, rutheless and regresive ideolagy and tactics only aggrevated the ethnic conflict even at times when the bravest of the Sinhalese stood up and took great risks to achieve justice and redemption for people outside their ethnic group.
