  • hey can i just eat small meals of rice and beans every 3 hours and drink alot of water???

  • @vinceperez158: you could, but that's certainly not the best option!

  • why are you obsessed with keeping fat away?

  • @rast123456789: I'm not, but thanks for your concern ;)

  • I love Doctor Clay, (me, t-nation) but lets update

Myth: Eat frequently to "stoke the metabolic fire".

article on leansgains , limited on what i can post

Meal frequency does not affect total TEF. You cannot "trick" the body in to burning more or less calories by manipulating meal frequency

  • @Meni69: I disagree (for the most part). I see time and time again that when people go from one or two meals per day to 4, 5, or 6 - they drop fat. Sure, going from 6 to 8 meals offers no benefit, but there is clearly a difference when going from one meal to five.

  • diet soda is worse than regular, that will make you obese if taken excessively

  • @curlye93: although artificial sweeteners may cause some insulin secretion, they don't necessarily make one obese. There are FAR more factors!

  • This was a very helpful video. I knew some of it like soda being so bad but wasn't aware of how good green tea is in the sense it can help burn fat too.

    Also you're really jacked.

  • Diet sodas are high as in sodium, and the artificial sweeteners suppress immune function thymus (sucralose) and kill your good bacteria in your gut, aspartame as Dr Russel Blaylock has proven is an excito toxin meaning it kills your brain

Great point on the cheat day, I consume about 1700calories a day, when U cheat day U can max 4000 calories which is about 24 hours of straight exercise to burn off so small cheat meal each week MAX

  • @seinfeld11123: diet sodas are not high in sodium, unless you consider ~ 35 mg (of the ~ 2,000mg we need) high. With that being said, it is certainly ideal to avoid diet sodas.

  • Number two is an absolute myth. Rigidly controlled metabolic ward studies have debunked this. The idea came from TEF concept, but given isocaloric conditions, the TEF does not differ between 3 meals and 6 meals.

The "metabolic fire" nonsense needs to go.

  • @CivitasUltraAporia: "absolute myth" is a bit of a stretch. I see meal frequency having a positive effect on body composition regularly. Whether this is due to an increase in metabolism or an optimization of nutrient timing is debatable. Although I have seen multiple studies demonstrating an increase metabolic rate with increased meal frequency, but admittedly this seems to be more when going from 1 or 2 meals to 4 or so.

  • not sure eating so often allows your body to burn belly fat.. we should eat 3 meals a day without snacking; fatty meat fish eggs cheese salads vegetables little no grains/fruits.. Cave man would not have eaten every 2hrs..

  • @mokugin81: just because cave men didn't eat every 2 hrs (and I didn't say to eat every 2 hrs, btw), doesn't mean it's not going to improve body composition.

  • 4:08 but I love some poptarts ^_^

  • Great advices Mr. Clay! Keep up the good work. Green tea for the win! Greetings from Norway;)

  • hot doctor

  • Thanks for the information ;)

  • thats alot of work doc. i am sure there are other ways to have a nice lean body without this much of a discipline.

  • hey bro isnt diet soda even worse than regular soda

  • Not from a physique-enhancement standpoint. From a health standpoint... maybe.

  • thanks. this is aawesome

  • may you give me an example what you can eat like foods every 3 hours please?

  • eat lots of fiber such a s greens, lettuce, celery stuff like that....they fill you up with less calories and that way you don't eat as much meat and or are tempted to eat more

  • I eat closer to every 2 hours, sometimes every three depending on my day. Here is my eating schedule:

    8:00AM - Protein shake

    10:00AM - 8 Egg whites and oatmeal

12:00PM - Protein shake (right after my workout)

1:00PM (Post workout) - Chicken breast and brown rice

    3:00PM - Protein shake

    6:00PM - Fish/chicken breat and brown rice

I sometimes have another protein shake before bed if I'm feeling hungry.

  • where you can healthy foot in universities, dorms?

  • Good work Dr Clay, no nonsence straight to the point!

    Thanks

  • That's a nice video.

  • Thanks :) Nice Vid

  • Very encouraging and great ifo. Thank you.

  • Good fats are necessary for a healthy body, and help lose weight, they are available in olive oil and fish.

  • This video is excellent! Follow all of his tips as they are spot on! Awesome information for the masses :)

  • excellent video. oatmeal in the morning is key.

  • can u do these fundamentals without going to the gym?

  • Heck yeah! And you should!

  • sir thank you so much for your video it really helped me a lot and put me on da right track.god bless thank u

  • Thanks for the kind words... you are very welcome!

  • ..diet sodas contain Aspartame, which will kill you

  • not good for you - sure. but kill you - that's a bit of a stretch.

  • Excellent advice.

  • The better way to lose fat is to eat less !!! it's the better way ! if you drink only water it seems wonderfull by me

  • thanks Dr..i will try =)

  • mmm i love some pop tarts

  • drinkin regular coke is sayin "i wanna get fat" lolol

  • While a very good video, I think the point about having many meals a day is wrong from one side. You state that bodybuilders eat many meals a day while sumo wrestlers eat only one (and are obviously really fat). This gives the impression that the meal count is what makes them fat, it isn't. Bhuddist monks only have one meal a day and they are extremely skinny. It depends on what you eat, not how many times you eat. But I do agree that many meals is a good idea for the reasons you suggest.

  • What, when, and how much you eat are ALL important. I totally agree, meal frequency is not THE factor that makes people fat (if it were this video would've been only 1 tip), but it's one (of a few) important factors.

  • egg whites and low fat dairy? which animal does that come from Dr Clay? one hundred years ago when there was no heart disease and obesity epidemic, people weren't planning their meals and eating chicken breast and eggwhites! they were eating fresh meat and whole dairy with veggies. Breaky, lunch and dinner. If you really want to get healthy and lose weight then start buying organic food and stop being a pig.

  • very entertaining post!

  • wat about every 2 hours? and no dairy, no fruits, and no starch?

  • listen to this guy if you wanna build muscle

  • man thx a lot. i work at wendys and man our food is soo unhealthy. anyways thx so much for the vid

  • great tips thanks =D

  • Great video man I'll be sure to use these 7 nutrition guidelines

  • ok here is my problem, I want to lose weight and be lean and strong but every time i Lose weight everyone calls me skinny and I dont like that. How can I lose body fat while still looking big and strong???

  • Good, vid! I added to faves.

  • dr thanx a lot for ur video it is really very good

im a beginner in bodybuilding i need smth helping me growing my muscles but with out sideeffects , i hope u will help me cause in the egyptian Nutrition is not good at all

  • Awesome 7 pointers! Thanks, but please keep the videos coming ... I only see one.. you are really worth subscribing to :)

  • Thanks a bunch! New videos are on the way.

  • when r u going to post new videos they are very helpful!

  • excellent advice , vagina love

  • Vagina love? I'm confuse because I don't have a vagina.

  • Very similar to a mass gaining diet, only smaller quantities. Good stuff.

  • Nice work. Completely correct, too. I'm sending this to my friends.

  • Please do, that'd be great!

  • Regarding the comment someone made about red wine and/or alcohol, consider the fact that alcohol consumption drastically cuts down on testosterone levels, it would most certainly have a direct negative impact on fat loss.

  • Alcohol's effect on test levels is not clear cut. Though you're right in that excess alcohol does lower testosterone output. Plus it's extra calories.

  • thank you doc. I hate it when my body depends on diet pills..

  • Thanks Dr. Clay. Good, simple, easy to understand information, in easy to understand language, that is easy to apply to everyday life.

  • do you have any advice for breaking bad eating habbits? For instance, I tend to eat junk (chocolate bars and ice cream especially) when I'm very stressed.

  • try running or exercise instead of going to food and don't keep chocolate and ice cream in the house. it works for me. get out of the house if there's a lot of food there, etc.

  • Hey Dr Clay. This is awesome stuff. All truth.

I will share this video around. Its like you just described my eating behaviors. I used to be a fat dude until about 15 months ago then discovered bodybuilding and the nutrition that goes with it. Now I sit around 8-10 percent bodyfat. I'm just really stoked that someones out there preaching the nutritional truth. Thankyou.

  • Dr. clay i was at 335lbs at 5'9 1/2. I am now 294lbs. I would like to be at my college playing weight of a solid 220lbs. I am now going to try your tips to help with the body fat as i drop weight. I do light dumbell workouts every other day. Is there any protein powders that you suggest? Thanks for your help.

  • There are a number of good protein powders. I often use Pro V60 made by Labrada.

    Keep up the progress!

  • I had a small stroke 10 months ago and balloned up to 298lbs! I was 220lbs and in good shape when my stroke hit me in my sleep! I just got the ok by my Doctors to start doing my Stairmaster 4000pt again! Thanks for the tips Doc! Hope to be around 225 by mid March Savanna Saint Patts day!

  • Stay focused and you WILL achieve your goal!

  • Yeah that is very true. I'm following a cut diet now outlined by scivation. It's very similar to what you say. Although a disagree with you about the diet soda-I'm done drinking that garbage. Feel the power big dog and shed the fat- not year round though, give your body a rest from the diet for a a while at least while u clean bulk.

  • Thanks for the tips! Im just getting over a small stroke and Balloned up to 298lbs! The funny thing was, when I had my stroke I was in top shape at 220lbs and running everyday on my Stairmaster 4000pt! I got the clearance by my Doctors to work out again and hope to be down to 225lbs for Savanna Pattys day parade! Thanks for the health tips Doc!

  • ill try it out c what happens ill be back in 2 weeks .......w=156.5

  • WoW man your amazing at explaining stuff

    Thanks Alot

  • I have lost 25 pounds since August 1st doing a low calorie diet. I have hit a plateau these last two weeks and need to rethink my program. I will try to follow yours and eat six small meals a day with protein every three hours. I hope I can get back on track because I have a long way to go to reach my goal.

  • I'm sure you'll do well. Congrats on the success you've already had!

  • im doing what you said, only on cheat meal. i used to have a cheat day, but that only makes me wanna eat it again the next day. tnx for the tip :) btw, you look good ;)

  • Glad I could help! And thanks:)

  • so i need to tget back into modeling. after a heinous creitin debacle i blew up to 220lbs, i went from 150lbs to 220lb almost over night i need to lose back down to maybe 160lbs [i'm 6'2] to be a runway model again. i tried mainly eating salad w/ chicken breast but i feel so lethargic. and my spin class immediately followed by powerlifting makes me dizzy. suggestions? but i lost 15lbs in like 1 week.

  • You need a more moderate or cyclical diet. I would consult with a pro if you're serious about it.

  • well i was eating, plain oatmeal straight from the can, for breakfast, a vitamin, then a complete salad w/ chicken breast for lunch and dinner... ok i eat like a cat so i eat bits from 11:00 - 8:00pm.

  • tip 4 - make protein sources, like protein powder, the centre of each meal. tip 5 - eat natural foods that come from mother nature, and not from a box. wtf?

  • These are GENERAL guidelines. Protein should be eaten with every meal, even if it has to come from a protein supplement. But as a GENERAL rule, foods produced by nature (like oats) are better than those that come from a box (like pop-tarts). We can't really compare a high quality protein supplement to pop-tarts, though both are actually synthetic. That's why these are GENERAL guidelines, my friend.

  • could it be mix wit creatine

  • Hay Doc

i was just wondering if you could post a good Weight loss diet, i realise protein is a big part of it but i really need some tips on what to eat at the right times!!

    thank you :)

  • Again, that sort of stuff lends itself better to my site and newsletter. See above on how to sign up - both are free.

  • Great advice. For more inforamtion on nutrition and natural health, check out my videos too.

  • As you said its good to eat 6 times a day but i just dont Know what foods are good!! Things high in protein are obviously good, but i just cant figure whats good quick small mean full of protein.

  • thanks for the tips. I'm really going to try and eat more times a day and smaller meals. It's really hard to do this. I'm not a morning eater at all. I work out 3 to 4 times a week regularly, I have for a couple of years now. The eating right is harder.

  • You're absolutely right; it is harder to eat right day in and day out than to exercise - at least for most people. BUT, the end reward will be more than worth it! And believe it or not, the longer you stick to a sound nutrition plan, the easier it gets. It simply becomes HABIT.

  • Do you have any thoughts and comments on eating ENOUGH food? I see so many people sabotage themselves with crash dieting.

  • I'll be talking about this in detail in a book I'm working on. But for now, let's just say that not eating enough (especially frequently enough) will cause one to have a high body fat to lean body mass ratio almost as much as eating junk. Infrequent eating is one reason why many are "skinny fat".

  • great tips, will help many people out as they tend to think weight loss if exactly the other direction of what you described (eat protein? i dont want to get big muscles!)

  • very good info. Eye opener for sum that wanna start right.

  • Uhhhh... thanks.

  • god your hot

  • i have a couple questions for you. i am an elite pole vaulter, training for the 2008 olympic trials and so eating healthy is a major part of my success. my coach doesn't want me eating carbs like bread, white rice or potatoes for dinner. he says if i want to eat that i should eat it at lunch. what do you think about that? Also, i consume splenda pretty much everyday. is that bad??

    thanks for the tips...excellent video

  • I think that advice is too oversimplified. Not necessarily bad, but shouldn't be a blanket statement. Everyone's situation is different and their diet should be tailored toward THEM. I hope Splenda is not bad, otherwise you and I both are doomed!

  • Yep, you're right. That was actually the first comment made on this video. The poor sound quality will be rectified on the next video. Thanks for your input.

  • This guy is awesome like the way he thinks, so damn true.

  • Loved the video. Informative and well done. Personally as a vegetarian, I have a problem with adding a protein in every meal as I try not to eat milk products. Mostly I find it difficult to find sources of protein. What would you suggest?

  • A protein supplement, ideally whey or a whey/caseine blend. They are derived from dairy, but (esp a whey isolate) is so refined that most people who have problems with dairy do not have problems with supplements.

  • What are your thoughts on drinks like Gatorade?

Should it be something done only while your working out, or is it ok to just drink it cause you want it, once in a while?

  • It's a concentrated source of calories, so I almost never recommend it.

  • If you play sports and are young (high school or younger) it's ok to drink gatorade within an hour before or an hour after a workout or sports game/competition, but I wouldn't drink that stuff at any other time. Propel is much better tasting anyway.

  • drinking gatorade once in a while is okay but most likely should be taken after a rigorous workout..too many people don't workout hard enough to have to drink gatorade..water will do for the most part..gatorade has sugar and calories , remember that

  • i was wondering if 1 hour a day can be overtraining then what about footballers and other gymnast who train almost the wholeday? is it a myth about overtraining or do u think it really means something? i'll be very THANKFUL if u give ur feedback on this ..em so very confused about my workouts and training..

  • My thoughts on this topic could fill a book. If you train for an hour four times per week, I'd lean towards you're not overtraining, but it's certainly possible. The athletes you mentioned simply adapt to the demands placed on their body. Again, long story for another day (or a future book).

  • Royalguitarist I'm no expert but you might want to consider a theory called "Dual Factor". The simplified example is to do frequent exercises during the week (like you did, but rest atleast 1 or 2 days), but not so that a single 1h exercise will drain you out. Also the idea is to train a single body part more than 1 times per week. Keep on doing this for 3 weeks then do an easy week: less workouts and keep it really easy. Total rest is possible too.

  • many thanx for commenting on that! i have been working out almost 7 days a week 1 hour atleast everyday but found no increase in strenght or muscularity . i read somewhere it can be overtraining? do u think my routine can be overtraining?

  • over training can have negative affects on your muscle building/toning goals, you shouldn't really need to do more then work out 5days a week(all msucle groups should be dun in that time) & the only time you should be able to work out 7 days a week with no detramentale affects is when you do 30-45 weight seasons which you should be doing anyways. muscle grows while you rest, lifting weighs only strains your muscle so that when you rest you gain muscle

  • sorry this isn't dr.clay but wanted to chime in...not seeing any gains does mean you're overtraining to the fullest..7 days a week is simply too much

  • I agree, 7 days of training is typically too much. But, just because someone isn't progressing doesn't necessarily mean they are overtraining. There are many other causes as to lack of progress.

  • i asked a quest may be if u can answer it ... em very curious to know how many times a week does one do the body workout? i heard somewhere that more than 4 times is detrimental.. need ur views

  • There is no simply answer to that question. But working out three or four times per week is great for most people.

  • REALLY GOOOD VIDEO!

thanks you get the point across

  • Glad you like it; thanks for taking the time to let me know. More coming soon...

  • ooh gr8 video.. very informative . i also checked ur site that ws equally nice.. need 2 ask a quest.. how many times to workout a week? when someone is looking for getting lean and a bit heavy as well.

  • Great video. Thanks for posting.

  • It's my pleasure; glad you like it!

  • whats wrong with the diet drinks...they don't have any extra calories??

  • Precisely why they're not a problem concerning fat-loss. In another realm of nutrition, we could look at the potential detrimental effects of artificials sweeteners, flavors, colors, the carbonation, etc. Kind of like eating organic fruits and vegetables (sans pesticides) or just eating regular fruits and veggies. Most need to simply focus on the things in the video - that's enough to worry about for now:)

  • thanks for the reply dr.clay...one more thing...regarding preparation of food and eating it every three hours...thats a bit tough when u;r busy most of the day with u;r work...and how do we prepare the type of food we r supposed to have..

one more thing...whats u;r opinion on fat burning supplements...more specifically creatine monohydrate...r there any side effects??

  • Briefly, cook in bulk on Sunday and portion out into containers the night before each day. Supplements - that's a whole 'nother story. Let's come back to that; too long for here. However, creatine is not a fat-burning supplement.

  • Diet drinks have aspartame in them, and it's a nasty artificial sweetner :(

  • Most diet drinks have aspartame, but not all. More and more are flavored with Splenda. I personally don't (or rarely) consume aspartame, but some seem to have no problem with it. Regardless, it has no calories.

  • diet drinks are many times just as bad or worse than there non diet counter parts, I have been in to nutrition for years, one thing that should be included in this list is eliminate as many chemicals from processed foods as possible that would mean ditching the advice about the diet drinks being ok, also many diary products are laden with toxic matter fromt he horrific abuse towards the animals, point is just eat natural and dont eat more than one cheast meal a week like he said that I agree!

  • I do not disagree that we should try to eliminate as many "chemicals" from our diet as is reasonably possible. However, that was simply not the focus of this video. Regarding fat-loss, I'd recommend a diet soda over a regular soda any day. Unfortunately when doing a short video, article, or even seminar, I have to 'hit the high points' which is what I did here. I certainly agree that we consume too many 'chemicals.' I'm especially not a fan of aspartame; but I'll save that for another day:)

  • wyonnaplx, drink red wine. Its non fat, good for heart disease, and is actually proven to speed metabolism up

  • Red wine certainly has a number of cardiovascular benefits. I'm not aware that is actually speeds metabolism more than any other alcohol (and that effect is short-lived). Red wine is non-fat, but so is white wine, beer, vodka, whiskey, etc. The big plus for red wine is the polyphenol content.

  • I'm trying to diet AND excercize, but I was wondering, if I chose JUST to stay on the diet, about how long would it take to lose say 10lbs?

  • Unfortunately that impossible to predict. Kind of like saying "how long would I have to study to make an A on the test?" There are a million variables. But I routinely have clients lose ten pounds in 4-5 weeks.

  • Good video. Good advice. Preparation of meals ahead of time can be made even easier, as well as eating smaller, natural meals every 1-1/2 to 2 hours --- the WholefoodFarmacy has the absolute BEST natural food for those on the GO.

  • Really awesome video - for the last two month i've been working out and following your 7 rules and the results are obvious!

    One question though:

If i drink around 6-8 beers in one night every two weeks, would that cover my weekly cheat meal? And do you have any advice on how to drink alchol without throwing away the advantage i've built up during the week?

  • I'm actually working on a book on just that topic - drinking and fitness. Ideally you would consider that your cheat, otherwise (till you get the super-detailed version via my book), considering lower your carb on the day you're going to drink.

  • i am an independent distributor for Herbalife in houston and i am very interested in maybe having you speak to a few people about this specific issue we are all about nutrition and changing people's lives but a little encouragement always helps from someone who is not a part of the company but yet has the same concept about nutrition.

  • Contact me at drclay@drclay dot com - thanks for your interest.

  • Protein, so, what are other sources other than meat?

  • Milk, eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, soy, and protein powders (like whey) are some that come to mind.

  • Hi hun great video! You have a great bod too. Next time do your video shirtless lol. Good info though thanks ;)

  • Great!. Nice simple rules.. question tho. Are Non-alcoholic beers okay when following your rules?

    regards

  • To an extent. You just have to factor in the number of calories they contain. The only problem is that the calories aren't exactly top-notch - essentially empty calories. But if you're doing everything else right, yet you indulge in the occasional non-alcohic beer, you'll probably still reach your goals. It's all about moderation!

  • great advises thank you it was very helpful

  • Excellent advise, though low audio

  • Thanks, and I appreciate the input. I edited and reviewed the vid on my desktop which has great speakers. Then when I went to listen on my laptop I realized it was low. I will correct that when I redo the video, which will be posted at my new channel - TheDrClayChannel (I simply like that name better).

Though I'm an "expert" in some areas, video producing and editing is not one of them; so I'll always appreciate constructive criticism.

  • Makes perfect sense! Cute guy too! Got that gorgeous southern drawl that is so sexy.
