  • The cup that goes along with the water bottle could be useful for boiling if you need to. Sure it may be small amounts of water at a time but that means less heat energy to boil. You could use the bottle itself for boiling but for a small amount of water to keep you warm, the tin cup could be very useful, and you could use it to gather rain water as well.

  • What type/brand of flashlight is that? It looked cool...that's why I am asking.

  • what about is the key-chain kit?? what is on it?? what about sabre saw vs your folding saw??

  • Survival is a mindset. People panic. If you have training you are less likely to panic. It is psychologically empowering. More knowledge means having to carry less gear. But many people out there have neither. Gear is easier and faster to acquire than knowledge. PLEASE encourage your friends and family to carry the minimum of gear... first aid kits, blankets in winter, etc... in their cars. Start basic. Fuel their interest. Dispel the mystique. Make it common sense.

    -peace.

  • would it be worth swapping the folding saw for a wire ring saw?

  • P.S-cool & righteous stuff

  • AFSOC PJ. mryellow123, thank you for you feed back. You are correct that "Spot" is a cheaper "PLB" and always a good redundancy but, never a capable way for our teams to find you. ACR ResQlink 406 Personal Locator Beacon with built in 121.5 MHz homing becon is an investment on your life and your love ones hardships to follow a recovery effort than rescue. Sir, God forbid you were ever down in our OA, we would try to find you and your family is counting on us. Think about them also Sir.

  • looked on the website. Where does one find the pathfinder tarp? Is there something about it that makes it better than a heavy duty tarp from, say walmart?

  • @themighty9mm Think he has some new natural fibre one... Probably the most important thing.... The one at Walmart sends your country down the drain.

  • Can someone help explain is this a voluntary outdoor outing kit, or a kit you would use for getting lost...because I would imagine if it was a voluntary outdoor outing kit, I would want to bring along at least some kind of blanket/sleepingbag and a spoon/bowl for eating

  • I might not agree with you on lot of stuff but I have to give you a credit because you always speak from the hart and try to help people. Cheers

  • nice kit and keep making the videos your doing a great job.

  • Dave, I'm a USAF PJ "Pararescue man" I was told about your website from a current rescue Op. The women we pulled kept a kit based off your sound advice. She stayed alive for three days before the EVAC. I understand your work for self reliance but, I ask you to please include PLB's on every web post for now on as an option. When I asked the women why she had no PLB she responded, "Your's and little web sites advised one" This is something you can correct and aid us in recovery. AFSOC.

  • @Chae7471 they're not exactly cheap.... "spot" is a cheap option but not very effective and doesn't give you a radio signal to hone in on..... It's tough man, I'd love one, but no way I can justify the price when I'd rather die in the bush then in an old age home.... Would be great if rescue services were able to subsidise them to make their job easier but that's not very realistic either.

  • Here's one that hasn't come up in the pathfinder system that i've been looking at heavily, and that's a good, heavy duty camo net. It's multipurpose, lightweight, but it is kind of bulky. Still, it can work for a hammock, it can provide shade in hot weather, (We'll call that shelter), a blind for hunting, a net for a trap, it's extra cordage. It does take up a lot of space, but for long outings, i'd have a larger backpack for carrying some food stuff. I think the bulk is neglegiable for it's use

  • If you don't have a folding saw, you might consider ditching the multi-tool for a small pair of Vise Grips and wall board saw blade. This was mentioned in the past. The Vise Grips can hold the saw blade--they become the handle-- and presto: you have a functional saw. Just another possibility.

  • love the vidios please keep em comming

  • cool vid

  • would you think ranger beads or a pacer would be helpful for distance thats to say you had a descent map??

  • @dyna19781 I agree for long distance travel (with map and compass). I have one strapped on the shoulder strap of my backpack.

  • You are awesome. ...And if we strap the 50gal. bag to the front of the 1st aid kit we could even clip the whole thing to a belt & free up a pocket.

I'm just starting to build my self-reliance skills & load-outs & I love how you're teaching such great prioritization intelligence & max capability w/ min. carry.

Thanks and I've been learning a ton from you already from just a few clips. New fan. Ace vids.

  • Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and share your teachings......this information and you , just might save a life by doing what you do. I would like as I am sure many others would also if you could do A INCH bag set up ...........I know many people are making those right now and this would help alot of people, including me, to gain some perspective on what a true survivor would take and why.

  • Fucking Awesome stuff man, I really enjoy your teachings. I wish you had a video of a full video showing yourself making a shelter fire and everything.

WHat Mora is that? Mora 840 MG?

  • What you smoke? :[ thats not good! Like the vids keep them coming!

  • amazing video sir. keep it up

  • Your videos should be mandatory curriculum in high school. This is serious brain food. Thank you for uploading your knowledge.

  • great video i like ur suggestions,i also like ur dual survival show on discovery. i would really like to see u make a bug out bag or G.O.O.D video, i think u really know what u r doing and would value ur suggestions, well take care and b safe, god bless

  • You can also use a section of the can liner in the same manner of the package of the battle dressing (i.e in the event of a sucking chest wound).

  • have you done a video going over the items on your edc?

  • Your the Danial Boone of modern times, hope you understand what I mean : }

  • I will always support you man...love the videos....made my first snare out camping last weekend and my girlfriend thought it was way cool

  • In your snare kit, what was the beeswax for?

  • @sqwach lubrication.

  • Hi Dave. 2 years since you made these videos and I still thoroughly enjoy watching them! Why ?? Because these vid's are super valuable to both newbies and "old-hands". Newbies because they may not know how to start off, and old hands because it helps them refine kits, and better understand what they may be doing by habit or learned by rote.

Video's explaining the 'thought process" behind filling various needs are as important as the demonstration VID's. Thanks for 3+ great years of videos man

  • what is this hammock 06:15

    And what is that 08:57

What kind of first aid use in this 10:00

  • Thank you for the awesome information... My wife and I are very interested in the things you are teaching

  • Your vids are great. I wish you much success and longevity. I have loved this stuff since I was a kid and practice and prep when I can. I would love to spend some "Dirt time" in your classes. I hope to enroll soon. Please dont think I am judgemental, but you said you smoked. I know you live to be self reliant, any plans on quitting? I am a past "2 pack a day" guy and dont miss the "hack" or the "tax man" . Blessing to you and yours. Hope to get with "The Program" soon.

  • VOTE FOR RON PAUL 2012 PRESIDENT!!

  • what r ranger bands?

  • @cougarbahia It is just a nick name for rubber bands usually made from cross sevtions of inner tubes

  • it is a nick name for cross cut sections of inner tubes

  • i love ur vids and ur tv show. i'm a stroke survivor and although i cant travel as far or fast as i used to, i still go for shorter day hikes and kayak runs. can u pls advise me how to carry live ember to reuse later? thx karen. ps do u ever have displays/shows in eastern canada? i can't get enough of the outdoors and survival talk. ......karen...im big fan of yours

  • i just got a bushmaster survival knife with a 15 inch knife, the sheath holds a snake bite kit, whet stone, 1 snare, a small flashlight, a compass on the hilt and a pack of matches 2 bandaids disinfecting wipes fishing hooks, thin fishing line and two sinkers in a compartment in the handle. my question is one is the knife to large and two if so does the equipment in the sheath offset that?

  • what hammock is that

  • Can you still buy all the old pathfinder gear?

  • Thanks Dave another great vid

  • Recently stumbled upon your videos and found them to be of tremendous help. It is very obvious that you speak from experience and it shows. You are truly a "guru woodsman!" Keep up the great work!!!

  • Dave, excellent video. I am no survival expert but do believe like a boy scout, "be Prepared" with the materials and knowledge of how to use them. have the fishing kit because know how to fish. I have never trapped game with wire and therefore my kit does not have that material. The two most important things I consider is that I fully understand how to use what i carry and that they are excellent quality.

    Keep making videos!

  • hey dave where did you get your combat dressings and and other bandages in your "last aid" kit. ive tried googleing what you called them but i cant find a supplier. help greatly appreciated!

  • where can you get the bees wax that you have in the trapping kit?

  • Great video Dave. Now I can go and take 40lbs out of my pack :-)

  • Lot to think about, I have reset my kit at least ten times, I keep overpacking. I am only a day hiker, but I was bringing 5 fire sources, 3 ways to filter water, enough meds for a week, and all the tools to build a long term shelter. Now I am down to a canteen, water filtering straw, some water tabs, alcohol wipes, medical tape, duct tape, a good multi tool, waterproof matches, para cord, a tarp, and a whistle and mirror. Everything, except the canteen, fits into an 18oz Kleen canteen.

  • Great videos im having a blast being educated. I also love the the show, you and Cody crack me and my wife up. question at 1:43 you talk about the edc kit. where could i find that video? I looked all over. Thanks again.

  • I realize this is an old video, but I have a couple humble suggestions: If you ranger band the bags to the other side of the last aid pouch, you can use the ALICE clip on your belt to cut down the bulk in your pockets and save space for gathering. also another sheet of the Aquamira tabs ranger banded to the bottle. you can fill the bottle in a river, drop in a tablet and keep walking. no need to fight with the pouch or build a fire. Keep up the great videos

  • Awesome vid bud. I'm currently trying to piece together a kit just out of what I can pick up here and there.

Quick question is that your rabbit stick behind you? :p

  • he's good for a tv show....he not only knows things but he can comunicate very effectively whan he has in mind. I could listen for hours.

  • that's right Dave...stay positive and keep educating us! great job!

  • thanks for all the vids Dave and for taking all the time to put them up. really helps me out a lot =)

  • Kick Ass vid dude, soon as i can scounge up the cash and the time, i'll be there to take a course,, money not so much the issue as the time, since 7 month olds cant watch themselves, anyway your doing awesome on you show and here. thanks for the video.

  • Thanks for the great vid dave really love your stuff. And i think that its awsome that even though you are god knows were in the world, while you can, you still take the time to make and edit videos for all of us. Not many would care that much.

  • Wear the gloves!

  • Thanks Dave!

  • Thanks Dave!

  • Fantastic video! I have just discovered your channel, and I'm enjoying every video very much. Some of them I've already watched couple of times. Thank you for teaching me about bows and how to make arrows. Now my overloaded too heavy ruksack problem is solved too. Can't wait to watch another video.

Best regards from Serbia! Keep the good work and can't wait to see you at Discovery

  • @mirkosrndovic go to huludotcom to watch full episodes of dual survivor. you'll love it.

  • I have a new 3 piece kit. It's a cell phone, sleeping bag, and Amex card.

  • Excellent series! Thanks so much, being a lady I found weight of kit of be a big issue. Its helped me a lot to work out priorities.

  • Great video. Gotta watch more of your vids.

Re: the flashlight--You can get very powerful flashlights that are much smaller than that rectangular thing, weigh next to nothing and have the ability to signal or run at low levels for long periods of time. Perhaps you already know that. I'm just a flashlight junkie.

  • Great work, for me it comes down to food water and somewhere to sleep, thats what I need, every thing else is a want, so I ask myself what do I want ? Light is fast, but heavy is comfortable, what ever is wrong with the little finger on your left hand fix it its distracting, great vid my best M.S. in the U.K.

  • Thanks Dave!!! Love the new show!! You are a great teacher of knowledge that everyone should have a grasp on. It's fun, it's rewarding and knowledge is power. God Bless and congrats on your success!!!!

    Jason from Iowa

  • I think Maxpedition owes dave some royalties for the versipack idea.

  • hey dave ! What if you were in a bailout situation and you ended up having to bail out almost all of your items but the items you were able to keep with you were your last aid kit and your paracord?

  • why don't you just keep the hole but pack?

  • Very informative videos. Even though I live in the city I try to keep as much knowledge as possible just in case I go outside city limits....

Love the new Discovery show by the way.

  • i think i haerd you say that you can use the mullan leave as a bandage. did you also know that you can boil mullan leave and breath in the steam to help fleem from your lung's. great video and keep them comeing

  • knowledge is number 1 , in a real survival situation without anything that will play the

most important part without any doubt.

  • Great videos, I really appreciate the time time and effort you put into this. Greetings from Sweden!

  • Dave, Your videos are excelent!

    Greetings from Peru!

  • I am french, I have'nt seen you on discovery but I do love your videos. Keep on giving us super technics and great ideas!!!

  • i bought a whistle at Wal-Mart , its got the whistle, compas, thermometer, magnifying glass. it was $ 3.88.

  • @Balzy73 yeah, the worst crap you can get for the money, the thermometer won't show anything good, whistle isn't the loudest, i really doubt about magnifying glass, the only thing that could be useful is the compass.

  • Your a smoker? First thing to go should be the cigs. Lightens the "pack".

  • Dave, thank you so much for your advice and dedication.

  • Thanks Brother! Great inspirational, practical, and helpful knowledge!

  • When I first read the title of the two cllips here I was under the impression of why we use "kits". Then I thought about it in a diffrent way. We use "kits" every day. Our wallets, car keys/key chains, or even a purse for a woman. Its the same concept. just not for the wilderness. We all do this from time to time. I kind of see it as the same thing. i know I have changed what I have in my truck everyday since i have been learning with Dave... Stay safe .... SCOUTS OUT!

  • spoken like a true soldier

  • He uses the wax to wax the wire in the winter to keep moisture from sticking and freezing and keep the traps from sticking. It can also be used for other things like fire starting.

  • great Dave, thank you

  • Whats the point of the wax in with the snares ?

  • keep water from ruining them? maybe using it to waterproof items... not exactly sure. but some uses.

  • If you wear a Leather Belt it can multi-task as a Knife Sharpener. Stropping a Knife on leather is good to keep a fine edge. It wont sharpen a dull knife but it can help keep your knife sharp.

  • goes the same with jeans or something.

  • This is another gem in your video collection Dave :D Also with your 'last aid' kit try maybe putting the garbage bag on the other side so you can utilize the belt clip. One less thing in your bag. Best wishes with Discovery as well. I love watching Survivor man And Man Vs Wild and I know im going to love watching your show as well one day. Your videos are enjoyable and brighten my day, thank you.

  • You are wealth of knowledge and a thankful guy. I wish you success in all you do.

  • What is an EDC?

  • logsliderrjh -

    Every Day Carry :)

  • Very informative. I would have kept the hammock - can't beat that comfort and you sleep so much better - also the snares better to have more than one sourse of food catching.

  • and keeps you off the ground. i've been bitten by bugs on occasions that a hammock would've saved.

  • Thanks a lot Dave !!!! I thought i could survive pretty good in the wilderness untill i watched your video's and realized i probably would have killed myself ! LOL

Your video's have tought me a lot !!

  • nice vid

  • im young but im so in survival like for 2 years now but im not 18 so i cant go to croatian survival school iv been watching ur vids like 2 days now and u know wht ur doin and i bet u would be better then less and bear grylls combined i hope u get ur own show so we can watch :P ty and this video helped me too 2000/5

  • one word...THANKS

  • out of all your videos this is my favorite!! every time i carry a 40 pound pack around i come back to this video and it helps me lighten it up!!!! can't wait to see you on discovery!!!

  • i love this guy

  • It's nice to know that you already have in mind that you wont become a celebrity that can't be bothered with youtube. But just make sure you give enough time to yourself too :P your gonna be a busy man.

  • Guerreiro,

    go go go!

  • Excellent stuff. Thank you.

  • Awesome videos, thanks for sharing this information =D

  • Hope things work out for you! Your videos are extremely informative. Thanks Dave!

  • great no B.S> vid.. i beleve in you and the things you do!!!...best of luck with the discovery thing

  • Im a wilderness survival merit badge instructor for my Boyscout Troop and I only wish i knew half of what you do. I try to learn more everyday, I sadly dont get as much time to practice and go out in the woods as I should. I keep hoping to get or make more time but i try to do the best with what i get on occassions. Thanks Dave for everything you do and keep the videos coming maybe one day ill get to meet ya and chat in person. Take care man

  • what is les strouds youtube name?

  • Awesome vid dave! Now I'm going to go through my BOB and see what can go.

  • In what Video do you discuss what you have in your fire kit ?

I know whay I carry but I was curious what was in yours please.

Thanks for all the great Videos

  • Great information, man. I enjoy your practical approach to survival.

  • Great video man I think u would make a better Les stroud

  • Again good vid.

On the trash bag , I've replaced all my kit with self made 5x7 or 5x8ft sil nylon tarps, They compress the same if not smaller than the 55gal liners. They have draw backs but hold up better than trash bags over time. Just 2 cents nothing more.

Keep up the common sense advise.

    D69A

  • Do you have any instructions for someone who wanted to make their own silicon nylon tarps? Perhaps you could put a video up on your channel (i'm subscribed there as well)

  • They are simple to make if you have a basic sewing machine. I have considered a movie but again they are so simple there is no need. You cut it to size, hem the edges, add your tie outs and your done . Fabric can be had online or even in walmarts discounted fabric isle. Size is key, a 5x8 is plenty for 1 person and great for kits. Larger tarps take more time and experience to make due to the seams. Sorry for the hi jack,

    D69A

  • Great work on the Kit I have something very simaler How ever for a shoudler strap I have a braided section of paracord which allows me an additional 200 ft of para cord in my shoudler strap as well as leaving loops open in it for molle and alice mounting for minimal carry to keep my hands and pockets free

  • Interesting video; very informative. Been putting a "just in case" bag together recently so it's good to get different points of view on what the contents should be.

Just wondered if you've got an opinion or any experience of water bottles with inbuilt filtration? (The ceramic filters, able to remove bacteria and viruses, as well as the usual gunk).

  • If you google "bug out bag," you'll find lots of good information to help you put your own SHTF pack together.

  • Great stuff Dave!

  • another great vid dave. i got a couple young ladies in training on your site. american women kick ass, especially withsome brother dave lessons.

    you da man.

  • This vid series is very helpful. It reminded me that in the wilderness, weight equals calories and calories equal survivability. I really have got to break down and get the saw...

    Thanks Dave. Absolutely GREAT information!

  • This two part video plus the EDC one are great! I believe that Colhane expressed my exact view. One question Dave: You have addressed the subject of firearms before so I know you are pro-gun, Why is it that you don't advise carrying a gun in your kit? A .22 kit gun and 200 hundred rounds weigh very little, and can put food in your table and scare away bogeys! I realize that to do any good you have to become very skilled with it, but still...

  • Dave,

Great job on these videos. It really brings out that you have to keep it focused on the things that will actually kill you. Along with the energy conservation factor I like to include items that will save me the time it takes to solve the FIRE-WATER-SHELTER problem right away. Nobody ever gets into a situation at 9:30 AM on a sunny day, its more like fading light and drizzle with a twisted ankle. Your kit avoids the overconfidence that good bush craft skills can sometimes encourage.

  • I have always been a tomahawk guy. I will get a good folding saw and try it out.

I am 55 years old and have carried the ax since I was fourteen and the one I have now is 15 to twenty years old. I don't know if I can leave it at home!

But you might be right about a good folding saw.

  • Dave,

I've been a reader of yours and have purchased items from you for some time now, and a thumbs up to all you do. I have to say these 2 videos on the Mentality kit has been great - you have taken my confussion (confussed easily I might add - %^) ) out of what to really have on hand so thanks - and looking forwared to your "TV" series

  • thanks for the info Dave

  • thanks Dave

  • This is another way of saying that the most important tool in the survival situation is our brain (talking about the mentality)

  • Kits are dynamic things, my 3 day has a mora, a kershaw folding saw, and a multitool, my 4+day has those 3, plus a 19" wetterlings, and a cold steel GI tanto

The Axe debate....I prefer to carry the axe on my longer trips, pretty much for splitting wood, carving certain things fast and easy, and all around hammering, and or smashing, I don't split wood, the traditional way, I do it in 3-4 foot lenthes, and use 3inch diameter wood spike/wedges, its viability is all about scope and scale

  • The GI tanto, it was $15, is thin, and light, and near indestructable, it hacks decent, within its scope, cord wrapped handle, the design is a "one toothed saw", it is a spear, a shovel, prybar, hammer, battons decent, it has youtube destruction vids

I beat the crap outa this knife, thats what its for. Cold Steels lower price bracket knives are phenominal, many designs, 10-20 bucks, good metal (for the price)

I paid 14+23+10+60+15, for all 5 tools, thats $64 without the axe

  • you have to be one of the best survivalist on youtube. i really do enjoy your vids.

  • AGREED!

  • that fishing kit is great.

  • Dave, dude,I just wanted to say how cool it is to see an honest guy trying to do what is right by selling what is worth carrying. The clowns that sell all the cheap novelty garbage on their supposedly legitimate sights are asswipes! You rock,Canterbury! Keep up the great work and QUIT SMOKING!

  • nice video dave

  • Take the gloves!

  • keep up the good work boss.

  • Dave, just wondrin' what multi-tool you're carrying in this video.

    thanks

  • Dave - you uttered the magic words that successful men have been saying for many generations -

Having knowledge and skill means you don't need nearly as much 'gear' to get the job done.

  • Dave you brought up a good piont ,about not duplicating stuff, but i think the fishing kit should go,i tried a kit like yours and had good luck with it,now it's like standard issue, Great videos i like seeing them, and hope you get the job with discovery channel

  • 8:40 my dad gave me something like that. it was his med kit he carried with him in Vietnam. it's got 3 pressure type dressings for if you get shot in the stomach or something, plus the actual case he carried with him. i never leave home w/o it except for when i'm at work.

  • Totally off topic. Just want to share something that happened to me about an hour ago. I live in Colorado and I just walked out off the trails behind my cabin. Probably about a 30 min walk into the mountains. Found a nice spot and hung out with my dog. (hes a pitbull). Out of no where he started running, so I looked to see what he was after and it was a baby deer. He actually CAUGHT the thing.

  • He had it on the ground and it was screaming for its mom. About 10 seconds later 2 deer show up and start to charge my dog. I ran up yelling trying to get the deer away from my dog and one of them turned on me staring me down. I have a big ontario knife, so I turned around so I could get behind a tree in case it charged me.

  • Once I turned my back the thing charged me. I turned back around and it stopped. Finally my dog lost grip of the baby and started chasing after it again down the mountain. If you were there all you would see is a dog chasing a fawn, 2 deer chasing a dog, and a person chasing 2 deer. lol.

  • hey dave about the traps & fishing kit y not have the 2 of them i would you can have lots of food fish one day game the next day but like you said it's up to the oerson right

  • I lost track of them and was looking for my dog for about an hour and a half, until my girlfriend called me and said "he just came home and hes out of breath wagging his tail".....so yea, That was my adventure for the day. Pretty nuts.

Sorry to take up so much space on your comment box Dave, but this is the last thing I watched before I set out so I figure this would be the best place to post it. =)

  • you rely no ur stuf your videos rely help me and give me lots of info to help me with my bushcraft thanks keep it up

  • Great series. I don't entirely agree with the ditching of the compass (it can definitely save your life), but I love the philosophy.

  • That is a question worth thinking about! 2 Tools in one really on that one, I have one on the EDC though! It is a toss up and does not weight much-Probably a keeper!

  • Thanks for putting this vid out there Dave. This stuff needed to be said! keep up the good work.

  • Great vid Dave. Made me go back and analize my kit. by the way what was Les strouds channel name?

  • it's survivour man on discovery channel. hope that helps.
