well.. even brand name sets have problems. Samsung and LG are prime examples. crappy samwha or sam young capacitors which barely last for the warranty period.
and that's pretty much all that's wrong with these.. coincidence? i doubt it..
good for me though, cause i can pick up dead LCD TVs and monitors for next to nothing, replace the caps for usually less than 15$ total and get a working monitor or tv :)
(that's how i got my current 22" Samsung LCD Monitor for free LOL)
to be honest, it doesnt matter WHAT brand you buy new anymore. its all junk in my eyes. ive seen alot of TVs come in for repair with stupid preventable issues.
I have a new LCD TV and I like it but still like to repair and keep vintage TVs around. I will keep on collecting and restoring them as long as I can.
History has a filtering effect when it comes to quality. Plenty of TVs from the 50-70s needed constant repairs, never worked well, or even caught fire; the few that are still around were the cream of the crop. I'm betting the flat screens (at least LCDs) will be like CF lights; the ones that survive the first few years will hold up OK. But it's sad what's happened to customer support recently; stores should be on the hook for products they sell which are abandoned by their manufacturers.
Pretty much most modern TVs are throwaway TVs. In fact, most new electronics are just throwaways. it's kinda sad actually, all those years of technology, progressively getting better and better, and now we got all this cheap plastic crap.
I'm sure my vintage '83 RCA XL-100 will be lasting longer than any flat screen in use today.
Thanks! Iv'e had it for years and would never give it up. If you think the flat sets are crap then you will love the video I am making this weekend, I will be "repairing" an LG flat screen with a hammer! Those sets are garbage before you open the box.
That's the problem with everything we have in this country. we sold out all of our once great companies to china and now were all fucked by the greedy bastards who did it. Bring it back to the USA!!
Oh yeah, I bet a lot of idiots out there still think that RCA products is still Made in USA because of what the 3 letter stand for and still a good brand, but WRONG!
You got that right! almost no name is made by their own company anymore. Like Emerson for instance, they are made by Funai, a very shitty company. They also make magnavox and several others. Poor Zenith has been passed around for years until fucking LG finally killed them and just put their logo on LG crap.
I also noticed that Sony is no longer Made in Japan. Now Made in China like the rest of them. I work a Walmart and I see a lot of shit at the courtesy desk and the claims area. Very sad and I hate working there too! Don't know what I'm doing there.
A few years ago, I was at a series of meetings with a guy who used to work for PhoneMate (the old answering machine MFG). He said that being a WallMart supplier was a sucker's game; they made sure you couldn't make money. It made me wonder how manufacturers treat WallMart customers; why would they go out of their way to ship quality goods and support them conscientiously if they can barely justify doing business with WallMart in the first place?
I prefer 60's and 70's technologies than digital era because it is more reliable, built to last and more solid than plastic! I have repaired a BRAND NEW from box RCA CRT flat TV or "TRU FLAT" for a customer who had dropped it accidently and the screen weights a ton! (up to 100 lbs.)
while all the rest of the TV weights about ten pounds!!! I have repaired it in about a month... the PCB was broken in several "X" in the FBT transformer area a surgeon job! Finally only a color puff in the upper right of the screen sills! Plastic is a crap for making large TV's and other large appliences. When I see a collector of vintage electronics whatever the website, I can't stop congratulate them!
Nice TV and an interesting news story as well. Part of the problem is that most people are not willing to pay big bucks for a quality television. I am guilty of that. I bought a VIZIO 32" LCD TV for $600. I probably won't last long. My SONY Trinitron last about eight years before the power supply failed. I have a Stromberg Carlson tombstone tabletop radio that was made in 1935 and it still works great!
i collect vintage TV sets

Those Flat TVs are built like crap. I have 2 vintage 19" TVs that still work great. I'll get it up here someday.

Everything is so corrupt these days it's crazy just absolutely crazy. From now on I'm going to only buy vintage unless it's not possible.
