may rust but i would like to see a termite chew through that, in thirty years it might rust enough to let one in to have a nibble on a chair lol in the mean time you weld on a patch and continue to laugh at mother nature ha ha ha i like the idea but it need refinement for me to get the wife in one lol
180? Man that is way out there? They do 16X80 which is actually 16X76 since 4 ft is used to tow. You end up with about 1216 usable space and they sell that all day long for under $25 a square foot. Sure that is not as strong as a shipping container home but you have to admit you could build a concrete storm shelter with some of that savings. We can get shipping cans for $2K what gives that is $6.25 a sqft. That is the reason they are attractive $ save$
for 1 man these big metal boxes r building blocks....what ! 1000s of people r doin this !... gezzz , no big deal ...and $180 a sq ft...what ta rip ....the reason to use sea cans is to make it inexpensive ,. boy did this guy miss the ''container ship'' or what on price point !?!..and the crazy train rolls on,,,,peace
@MustangGT2142 If lightning hits your wooden house, it will burn to the ground. If it hits a container, theoretically, the metal will redirect the electricity around your space and directly into the earth, as if the whole structure was acting as the lightning rod that a normal structure might require for protection. If anyone has actually tested this though, the video could be interesting.
I think the cost is outrageous but I suppose you're paying for the architecture/artistry. I think the reuse of shipping containers, dumpsters etc. that would otherwise be a stacked eyesore is a great idea.
i tihnk they made a mistake, they say $180sqft, but the article i read about the same house says average custom home is $200/sqft and the container home is about half that so probably 110-120. i'd rather have a real home if it was just $20sqft difference since on resale it will prob go down in value
very interesting, and cheap to build, but i would definitly make the exterior look like a modern home and protect the exterior. And considering Canada just passed a stupid law that you need 20% down payment on a home, up from 5% could take a decade or more just to save up after living costs.
definitly something i will consider when i have the money saved, i could buy a 4 40ft containers in one year with the rent im paying and it woulb be bigger, and since thats in BC i would say i might even be possible to be done for $80sqft or less
@kb8618 "And considering Canada just passed a stupid law that you need 20% down payment on a home, up from 5% could take a decade or more just to save up after living costs.". This isn't true. The 20% law is for people buying a second home, such as an rental property, or for speculation. This is not a stupid law as people buying more homes than they need increases real estate prices.
Malaysia has started this great idea too! See " SMART GREEN HOME 2010" at youtube. It is the 1st in Malaysia of upcycled Containers House, very impressive

louis: New World Order my friend. It is biblical. Resist the "mark" or perish. This is why the politicians are allowing the economy to fall to shit... once we are broke, we'll be more likely to swallow their "blue pill".
I would feel safe living in one of those homes made from shipping containers. It is a cheaper alternative to the weaker and more flamable conventionally built homes. Besides, if enough people did this, then, there would be less dependency on trees for wood.
Trees are a renewalabul resource. and mine and processing the metal is probably pretty bad for the environment. Im not saying the containers are a bad idea. Im just saying that wood as a recourse is get's a bad rap. :)
Shipping containers have a limited operational lifespan, after which they are discarded and forgot about in shipping yards. Why not use these discarded boxes for something useful?
you: I agree..way too high (180.00 per ft.) I built my spec home 13 yrs ago in the NE USA and it cost me (yes, I did alot of work) about 60-65 per ft. These prices must be retail.
There is, but that is unfortunately only effective for keeping heat out, not holding it in. There is some good news, though. There is a U.S. company that sells DYI spray foam kits that let you use foam at a cost of about $1 (U.S.) per square foot. That company has an office in Mississauga, and is poised to enter the Canadian market.
If you cant get it in Canada, let me know and I will purchase it here, and send it to you. I do these projects regularly and find the foam is the best!
My mother bought a shed from a man at auction it was delivered for about $600dimensions are 8.5'x24' it has served as temp housing for a number of family members and is being used by my gransmother now. It is about the same dimensions as a container just it came prewired. When each of us stayed there we used 1/2 of it and the other1/2was washing machine and freezer space. Rent is so high becasue the wealthy want us broke to keep us working forthem;buy some land get a hut and save your cash now.
If we had these in New Orleans we could make them float when it floods then the houses could be saved for when it is dry. But America is so snooty they will not allow anything that is less expensive and practical. Hell our cars are made of scrap metal. I hate our system we buy land and are not allowed to build what we want unless we spend tons of cash greasing the permits department. Where is the permit department when we are flooded out by the army corps of engineers f**kups!!!!!

$180 sqft, I hope thats Canadian $
Where I live in North carolina it cost 85-110SqFt to build conventional. Used containers sell for $2500

$180 per sqft pricing isn't exactly an attractive rate compared to the average price of $200 per sqft. to build conventionally * (in BC) *
