Yes, the director does set a fast tempo at the 1st entrance; did no one hear/detect his slowing of the tempo at the 2nd entrance at 1:42 where he also scales back the dynamics in preparation for the ending?
To all the people who commented on the "rushed" tempo, I would argue that most groups sing this like a dirge. I think Conductor Tucker's interpretation is spot on, and the CUGC is absolutely incredible in this rendition. Thank you Prof. Sokol for introducing us to this Biebl masterpiece, and to the current club which keeps certain traditions alive, albeit with fresh interpretations. Bravo!
My son was with CUGC and I heard this piece many times. I think because of the group's history with the piece and their familiarity with it, their versions are better than any I've heard from any other group. Note, that only a handful, if that, of the group each year are music majors. The rest come from the other disciplines and sing because they love it. Unique group who can sing this song anytime, anywhere, by heart - with heart. See them live when you can.
I was with CUGC on the Eastern European tour of "72. In two short years Biebl had become a standard piece and it could be done impromptu. Having had our formal cathedral concert banned in Budapest (cold war politics) we took a tour of said cathedral and did the piece anyway, LOL. Women began to cry and wanted to kiss us to thank us for bringing music to them. So Biebl's Ave Maria will always hold a special place in my heart. Never tell Cornellians they CAN'T do something. LOL
having been one of the first to sing this piece with Prof. Sokol and the CUGC ,all others are merely copying the piece brought to this country by the Glee club after a fabulous concert tour in Europpe in the early 70's. The Navy group is good and the piece has been rearranged for 7 horns by a member of the Navy Band, it too is outstanding!
This version isn't bad. The song is designed to have a small choir sing the echo, and this choir didn't have it. They just didn't have a distinct difference between verses in dynamics. If you want to hear a great version, look for UW-Eau Claire's Singing Statesmen's version of this song. It is truly beautiful. You can hear the change in dynamics and tempo changes. In fact, one member used this song as his audition to get into Chanticleer. Yes, he was the high tenor in the trio.
Does anyone else hear a possible intonation problem on the ascending line around 2:25? Otherwise, great sound. I agree with everyone else that the basses could be a little more prominent, the whole piece a bit slower with some more feeling.
Not bad at all....i agree that that Tenor 1's are a little strong...I heard the Rutgers Glee Club do this a IMC 2008..i put this version by Cornell just under that one...that performance at IMC by Rutgers was incredible..the entire audience got up and sang it with them..breathtaking...but this version is still good!
Too fast...I don't have to explain the meaning of this text, everyone knows it. But it has to be more meaningful. I really like the blend of voices, and the sense of precision that you guys have. Keep it up, and slow it down!!! :)
Impressive, missing some serious bass though, specially after every solo. Need some ground shaking there. Apart from that, nice version, havent heard that one before.
WOW!! I am so glad I ran across this. Beautiful piece, incredible phrasing, haven't heard it quite that way before, tonality spot on, this is a chillbump rendition.
I have to say --I am a professional opera singer and I have heard many in my day (groups, choirs) and This was absolutely breathtaking! The blend was balanced and the tonality was incredible. I felt the choir breathing and living in this moment together. Thank you for taking me on a wonderful ride!
Wow. Go CUGC. This is probably the best preformance of this piece I've heard on youtube. Thanks for sharing! And keep singing with that awesome sound!!!! :)
if you are talking about the Fox show Glee, their perception of a HS Glee Club is what people would actually call an a cappella group. Many major collegiate glee clubs nowadays sing in this setting, possibly with choreography only occasionally.
Of all the classical choral arrangments, their is none that even approach this one. The end verse can never be matched and the use of how it brings all the song together makes it the best their is.

very nice. where is the high g in the first tenor solo on the last two measures? this is the most beautiful resolution in the whole piece. we have a dramatic tenor singing the solo and not half as many men with the same effect. all and all a good job. i agree too fast. this song is intended to take over six minutes. thanks for posting.
The Mansfield University Men's Chorus will be singing this with the Penn State Glee Club at a concert later this October. I'm so looking forward to it!
For me, the nitpicking usually stops at "Santa Maria" (3:04), and the welling up commences.
And I always find some spot in every unique rendition that grabs me. Here the gorgeous chord and dynamic at 4:02 makes my ass wanna juice a lemon. God knows, it must've been fun to lower the hammer down on that.
I agree, and that's been the one consistent problem when we perform this piece. In all honesty it's specifically 2 people from our section. Most of it is do to the passion that the whole group feels when singing this song.
The arrangement is a masterpiece, and one very close to our hearts since the CU Glee Club brought it back to the US in 1970. We had the pleasure of performing the Biebl twice at this year's National ACDA Convention.
Simply excellent!

The singers were great, but yes the conductor was moving too fast, not giving this classic its full expression.

I thought the director was moving too fast for this angelic song
