Fall of 1977 ... driving my brand new white '78 T-bird with the factory 8 track playing this song! Still have the car (163,000 miles and mint!) and the 8 track plays super fine! Thanks for posting this! :-)
I was almost 8 and living in Baltimore, MD, and it was the same there too - this song ruled the AM airwaves. I associate this song with several others from the summer of 1977: Andy Gibb's "I Just Want To Be Your Everything," ELO's "Telephone Line," and Andrew Gold's Lonely Boy." To this day, I still consider this era of my life as one of the best. Long live the 70s!
I had already hit the big "30"....thought I was on top of the world cruisin' round in that Satellite Sebring.....gold in color....it had so many whistles and chains under the hood...it was a rocket (and a big fuel eater....) had a 440 cu. engine...did I say it had some piss...???
The wonderful percussionist on this track, Tom Roady, just passed away a couple of months ago and it's a great reminder of him and his talent, listening again......
I was living in Tahoe..a waitress I worked with turned me on to these guys..said if she was on deserted island, this would be the one album she would want...been trying to find this forever...couldn't remember the exact name..thanks for posting!!
@HSECMAN I moved there in 77 to work at The Landing in Kings Beach...lived in Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, then Tahoe City, when I was working at the Cal Neva Lodge restaurant. Then moved over to South Shore living in Paradise and worked at The Freel Peak Saloon cooking there...moved to Washington in 81
I was totally damaged by a boyfriend when this song came out. I was 16 and drove out to his house in Galena Il.in my 72 Opel gt and found another girl's hair clips in his bed. I heard this on the radio as I was coming back from his house and it was July and there was mist on the road and I kne he had cheated on me and my heart was broken but I was only 16 and I would move on. This song gave me power.
I was 30 years old and driving my first brand new car - my '78 Thunderbird with a factory AM/FM/ 8 track player purchased 9/21/77 in Grand Haven, Michigan ... listening to this song .. 'um, thousands of time :-). Still have the car, the player and the Sanford Townsend 8 track cassette and all are still going strong!
I saw them in concert at six flags over Ga. in 1978. Me my 2 buddies and 2 other people were the only people there. So we smoked weed and watch the show just the 6 of us. W e still talk about that till this day, good times!!!!!
Thanks to the music making it possible to relive the best years of ones life...Listening to this as a teenager , sitting in my parents car parked in the driveway sneeking a cigarette and going places in my mind...LOL..running the car battery down many a times...
I think this song came out around 1976. A US navy band came and performed at our school and did this song. I graduated in 1978. That Navy band was stupendous, they sounded JUST LIKE SANFORD tOWNSEND. Especially the lead vocal.
You know, 100 years from now they will still be playing this song as background music in pharmacies and other stores. Who cares about Gaga and Beiber?
I know what you mean. I am 54 yrs. old., and my brothers are 6 yrs. older than me, and I got to hear a lot of different kinds of music. It will never be the same
In 1979 this song made me realize my wife of 7 years was having an affair. It was time to move and it was the best decision I ever made in my life. Thank you Sanford/Townsend Band !! :)
I was 11 when this came out; didn't know until finding your video who the artist was that performed it. THANKS!!!! LOVIN' THIS WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE!!!
I was 2 in 79! Thank God my dad made me listen to Oldies 100.7 WTRG out of raleigh NC(That station is gone now) because without it I would have missed the best music ever made! Im almost 35 now and still get goosebumps when this song comes on.
@cbmbdb I feel the same way brother....goosebumps...I can feel down one day and when I hear this song it makes me feel better...I miss those days 70's 80's and early to mid 90's...Today sucks.

@discpenguin1 Carter-you have a taste for music many 17 year olds lack. I am proud of you for taking this stance, and heartened that other people your age enjoy this righteous southern soul. Tell your mom and dad thanks for raising you right.
@HSECMAN most 17 yr old's today like rap that sucks big time.. RAP has no place in music history.. its just stupid.. anyone can spin an album backwards and spit in a microphone..
@davfrui if it's so easy, why aren't you doing it?? You are a fool if you think that creating the volume of lyrics in the average rap song is easy. Rock is 3 verses and 3 choruses (and 3 cords), woo hoo. Open your mind and let your initial prejudice go. They used to say that the electric guitar was the end of music too.
@CarterAlabama 1979 I turned 13.....I was skating on Friday nights and glad Disco was about dead.....listening to the album station here in Tampa Bay..QUAD 102.5 ....As for calling todays music crap I have to object. I love music from the 30's all the way to the last release from Bruno Mars. Every decade has ups and downs in the music industry. I must say New Wave and Metal from the 80's are my favorite. Good time then for me...
@CarterAlabama I was 10y and living in Charleston, SC. This was on AM WKTM all summer long; makes me think of the times we went to Folly Beach and getting sunburned.
@CarterAlabama 19 years old and loving the rock music of the 70's. One of the best concerts was Nazareth in Beaumont, TX. The smoke was so thick you couldn't see.
I always thought that this was one of the tightest, best produced, top 40 songs of all time. Saw another vid of them doing this live, and they were just as tight on stage as in the studio. Thanks so much for posting this incredible song!

This is an amazing song I have waited to hear again since my childhood and teenage years in the 70's! Thanks for this great post! What great music, lyrics, vocals!! BobbyK
when i got hired as a dj back in the 70's this song was just hitting the charts so it always takes me back to those days! it may have been their only big hit but what a CLASSIC! the production on this song is just amazing. definitely one of my all time favorites from those good old days! "... don't let the screen door hit you on your way out....."
Great tune, music will never be this good again! I feel sorry for the kids today, they will never know what true music is. Really sad to say the least.
I never have understood why these guys never had another hit song. This one is really good. A great singing voice, catchy lyrics too. Great oldie! Thanks for posting!
Thanks for posting! Ah, memories of the 70s with the Sanford Townsend Truck parked outside of Keyboard Products in L.A. fixin the B3! It took alot more talent to make good music back then it seems. No autotune, loops or copied and pasted samples, just real playing with real musicians.
No dislikes as of this moment -- FANTASTIC! While big when I was a kid, the lyrics recall the way a relationship ended; not a bad memory -- I smile about it now!
If anyone had oriental gate I would love to hear that .... this is the best music made the 70s music I have found nothing better maybe cuz i was raised on it but cant beat it....

You just have to feel for these kids today. This is what real music is all about. The music and the harmonies can't be beat. Maybe some day real music will come back into our lives?????? One can only hope.
Hate the fact that I'm almost 60, but damn glad I had the chance to grow up in this music era, all you young'ins will never know what it is like to grow with the music from the 60's, 70's early 80's. wow the crap today.
@dav1099 Amen, brother. Babes liked this kind of music and did my best to rock 'em all. We grew up with Toto, Steely Dan and the likes who had talent. Now adays, some 6 fingered neandathal spits into a microphone and they pass it off as a hit. In 1975, we'd got up and run that rascal off the stage and wouldn't stopped till we hit the city limits.
@dav1099 LOL dav1099 - I'm not that far behind you - turned 47 this year, and do remember this era quite well - was young when this one hit the airwaves, but I knew good stuff when I heard it. (oh, and lol, I'm from down south, and we say "younguns", lol!!!! just a subtle difference, maybe to do w/the region, HA!!)

@dav1099 I'm 18, my dad loved the music of that time period. I grew up with the good stuff. I love every minute of this music, they just don't make good music like they used to. I thank my dad for getting me into real music.
this song was great when it came out and its great now. I feel like I'm getting a heart massage. I've got the album, but no turn table, sad situation, I wish this would come out on a CD. THANKS FOR THE POST.
Love this song-always have. Great to sing when driving. Too bad these guys only had one hit. Good harmonies, got that Hammond working the background, good sax, good lead singer, good lyrics too-bummer dude.
i was 39 then but i thought i was still 21. i don't think i ever got past that in my mind. new friends, new job, new car but the music was still the same and it still is. don't get me wrong, i didn't get stuck there, i love modern music too and i play it more than most but there will always be a place for 'the oldies' for me...al
Jump back - to '77. This was a very popular song at the time and also had a personal meaning for me. It was a great summer and a turning point in my life. I would love to have that summer back - it surely was delightful in many, many ways. "Thanks for the memories." Of course, Thank You for the Post.
Always loved this song. I agree they are tight. Great musicianship.

Jeez, yeah this " recordng " sounds pretty good. But it's just like everything else nowadays in that digital format. It sounds compressed.
And this aint what the song sounded like on vinyl, way back when.
Blech.

this song was great when it came out and its great now.
