There's an old story about an F-16 pilot headed back to base and he calls the tower and asks for priority handling due to engine problems. (The F-16 is a single engine aircraft.) The tower responds by telling him that he's #2 for landing behind a B-52 with an engine out. Annonymous voice on frequency says, "Oh no, not the dreaded 7 engine landing."
Yeah, recently a retired Air Canada pilot back in the days when it was "Trans Canada Airlines" quipped that it was the nicest 3-engine airliner that ever existed. I believe, and I'm probably wrong, that John Travolta owns and flies a Lockheed Constellation.
BBBBEAUTIFU - i think however that the strong wind was more of a problem than the lost engine. ive heard in movies that they crossed teh atlantic on three engines and noone even noticed from passengers
@Santoslhelpa I crossed the Atlantic twice in a Super Connie. And yes, I did notice one of the engines not running. That was before we circled for a couple of hours to lessen weight then landing.
@cpovey1 you did ? wow that cool / how shes flyin? such a bbbbbbbbbbbeauty. Now theyre old and they made her shabby in the 60s when it was percieved inferior compared to jets.
Well, it was in 1958, and I was 3, but I distinctly remember looking out the left hand window (we were sitting just in front of the wing) and telling my dad that one of the engines wasn't working. One of my earliest memories.
I think that the super Connies are the best looking airliners ever made, and right up there with Spitfires, P-51's, and Mosquitoes as most attractive airplanes ever made.
You didn't actually catch the touchdown, and not only that, you don't know how to operate the camera. I don't want to hear you run your mouth either. I just want to hear the plane. Anyways, a 3 engine landing in a Constellation is a walk in the park. The Constellation is capable of landing with one engine. Again, next time, find someone else to operate the camera.
@stratoleft yes I saw your comment 4 months ago and just decided to comment. You're so smart. I really couldn't care less when you posted the comment, all I cared was it was a pointless comment.
Still the most beatiful plane ever! They were the planes manning the Pacific leg of the DEW line during the cold war. Flew round robin from Midway over Adak 12 to 14 hours. Never lost one.
You seem to be the only one with a clue here. 3350 turbo compounds were great if everything worked like it was supposed but sometimes that wasn't very often. It seems one can only stuff so much into a cowling and make it work. B-29's turochargers made so much heat they did their checklist on th take off roll.
the constellation was build to fly over the atlantic so i has 4 engine mostly 2 fails at the travel over the big pond, but the constellation was build to land and take off with only 2 engines and it can land with only 1 left this thing can perform things where all plane makers can learn of the should make planes that are be able to land with 2 or 1 engine left not this modern ones which need to have full control
i can give ya plenty infos about the conny cuz i flew on one. I talked to someone that was member of the test flying team. It was build to remain maintain with 2 engines left and they took off on a sunday mmorning with only two engines left, in the desert of arizona. He told me that the conny would fly with only two engines the only installed four for longer flights were engines cant be checked every 2 hours, as they should.
Connies were powered by turbocompound Wright 3350's, the same engines that Douglas used for the DC7 and DC7-c. The only commercial airliner that I know of that used 4360's was the Boeing Statoliner. Because it was based on the B29 the early versions also were powered by 3350's. The B-50 showed up just about the same time Boeing started fitting Statoliner's with 4360's.
The -049 and -749 Connies were powered with, if I remember correctly, 2800s. The -1049s added the 3350. The expression was that through their models, the Connie went from "overpowered to underpowered to f**ked-up powered." That turbocompound 3350 was a monster; it took a real flight engineer to run it correctly.
What a bird! I seem to recall one of these Super Connies having a home at an airfield near Kansas City, Missouri.
And with those immensely complex 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360s, it's understandable one would quit. I can't even begin to imagine how many moving parts just one engine had.
3350s were on the -1049 Connie. 4360s were on the Boeing Stratoliner and the KC-97. The Tanker guys used to joke that "the KC-97 was the best 3-engine airplane Boeing ever built".

Boy, it that thing pretty...even limping in.

@hlaltimus limping? Good luck finding one landing with all 4 engines. Limping would be 3 out of 4 dead, and one on fire.

Don`t believe everything you see in TV.
All airplanes can climb with 2,5% climbgradient after 1 engine has failed even twins.
It is necessary for the missed approach procedure.
And a 747 e.g. is able to stay on a certain level
even with 1 eng remaining operative.
My last post was no personal offence, sry!
