  • You. Are. Awesome.

    That is all.

  • One way unions are bad is that they increase local labour costs and so encourage companies to go elsewhere, which ironically reduces the supply of jobs for workers wherever the union exists. They also increase the prices of goods and services (I don't know by how much, it's hard to get data on it), partially offsetting their benefit (a "price floor").

I'm not saying unions are 100% bad, but realistically they have significantly larger negatives than left-leaning people typically acknowledge.

  • I love this video so so much <3

  • what happened to x?

  • @ThirdWaveCrave Had to watch a second time to realize. The text scrolled rather fast. Thanks. XD

  • yawns are contagious because: subject observes yawn and explodes

  • Just checked and 7 of the "Why are" questions are still the same. this is why we all should watch the vlogbrothers. the world is lost without you

  • Current results:

Why are smart people usually ugly? (*facepalm*)

Why are danes the happiest people on earth? (We are also the country that drinks the most alcohol. A connection?

Why are americans so fat? (*2nd facepalm*)

  • Finally intelligence on youtube.... I love you sir.

  • Yawns are contagious because we subconsciously think there is not enough oxygen when we see someone else yawn, so we yawn in order to get more oxygen, basically it's a survival instinct!

  • @poonahh Truth!

  • @poonahh i heard it was a subconsciousness act of empathy

  • flamingos aren't pink because they eat pink food that's completely false becuase their staple diet is algae, it has to do with the enzyme break down of carotenoids in their food.

"Enzymes in the liver break down the carotenoids into the pink and orange pigment molecules deposited in the feathers, bill, and legs of the flamingos. " -About.com

flamingos that eat more shrimp/other fish than algae are a more pale colour, so it's not got to do with pink food.

  • @NamelessShadow90 While it may have been subtle, I do believe he was just joking when he said that. He wasn't google searching the questions, looking up the answers, then telling the answers to the questions (unlike alot of the people who've done similar videos). He seemed to just be going off his own knowledge, and thus, not knowing why flamingos are pink, gave a jokish answer.

  • In his book Outliers, Malcom Gladwell cites the statistical fact that Chinese Americans are better at math than European Americans. His explanation was that they are descended from rice farmers, a profession requiring large amounts of calculation.

  • This woman trained a turtle to yawn, just to see if yawns were contagious for turtles as well. They weren't. She won an ig noble prize for it though!

  • Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword poster! =D

  • i want to have a conversation with you in person, i bet i would enjoy it very much :)

  • heres a question

why are fallout 3 and fallout 3 GOTY edition the same price on steam

you would think the one with less content would be cheaper

  • that was funny

  • hey what about ÆØÅ dammit!?

  • BEAUTIFUL MAN! wonderfully done

  • Zelda poster whoa whoa whoa.

  • Yawns are contagious because, well, it has something to do with social interactment and caring about the person you're catching the yawn from.

  • It bugs me that you skipped x. just a little.

  • @Nerdfighter12 You can find "X" in the description if you want to see it

  • In a southern public school, I was taught that Carpet Baggers were so aptly named because they would roll up all of the possessions of poor southerners into the makeshift bags created by the act of rolling up all of the repossessed items into the persian rugs that adorn most southern homes. Now we call it gentrification, and the euphemism for Carpet Bagger is Yuppie. Who's looking forward to post "recession" reconstruction?

  • Nice Skyward Sword poster

  • Scott Pilgrim in the shelf, nice

  • I am sure that the question has already been answered, but as a nerdfighter I feel I must answer it anyway. The carpet-baggers were called carpet baggers because the 'suitcases' they used to transport their belongings as they rushed to the South were pieces of carpet sown together to make a bag. NERDFIGHTERS!!!

  • after the civil war, northerners were called carpet baggers because southerners believed they quickly placed their few possessions into a "carpet bag" to travel to the south and exploit the decayed region during the reconstruction era.

  • ::YAWNS:: Damn you!!!!!

  • 3:00 come on Hank. Don't pretend you don't agree :P

  • Ezio on the bookshelf .-. Watch out

  • Can we get more like this? It was AWESOME!! In the traditional sense of the word i was full of awe at this video.

  • Yawns are contagious because of mirror neurons, which activate both when we perform the action associated with that neuron AND when we see someone else perform that action. Lots of functions have mirror neurons but we have less ability to inhibit yawning then we do the arm motion for throwing a ball because yawning is a passive and automatic action (like breathing).

I just made that up....not the mirror neuron thing, that's real, but who the fuck knows about yawning contagion?

  • I believe Dina and Caroline are from the Real Houswives of New Jersey.

  • Actually we do have some idea why yawns are contagious. It deals with mirror neurons in our brains, which allow us to copy others. (If you see me do a cool dance move, it's the mirror neurons that allow you to do it back at me.) These mirror neurons imitate what ur regular neurons would do if you were actually doing the action. We just don't know why they become incredibly active when someone yawns.

  • *Yawn*

  • Because their electron orbitals are filled. duh. Baha! ^_^

  • I think the "Why are we here?" was from Red vs Blue it was the name of a episode

  • This was a fun one :D

  • only 9 of these are still the top results on google, nearly time to do it again.

  • @vlogbrothers Carpetbaggers were from the time after the civil war, when the south had just rejoined the union. The people of the south that had once had all their money in slaves were now broke. They were willing to do anything for money. Some Northerners came down to the south to buy what ever the Southerners had to sell at a very low price. They carried carpetbags for whatever reason. And that is why they are called carpetbaggers.

  • I could actually answer the flamingos one, and so i stopped the video before you said it. Flamingos are actually white, they eat shrimp and something about that makes them pink. Now to check.....yup I am right. Oh and veins are blue because they carry the deoxygenated blood, as opposed to the arteries.....nope not right.

  • @theonlyzdog Apparently that thing about flamingos being pink because they eat shrimp is actually complete rubbish. I saw it on QI.

  • Zombies let us fight violence?

  • Great Clip!

  • I just yawned reading the top comments.

  • @VivaLaGloria3 That explains why this was in my top suggestions. :P

  • My dog would spit out grapes, and she wouldn't eat lettuce without dressing.

  • @coryldork LOL! Your dog is a boss. Awesome.

  • Was that an Altaïr action figure on your bookshelf?

  • Carpetbaggers in post Civil War US were called Carpetbaggers because they took carpets and turned them into bags to carry their belongings. They were usually Northerners. :)

  • i read the comments about yawning, and then i yawned

  • Manhole covers are round because sewers are round and sewers are round to maximize the area in them. A circle has the largest area with the smallest perimiter of any shape. So its round to maximise hold and minimise matirial. I thought that needed more explaining.

  • Q=QUALITY

  • You skipped "x"!

  • @Preds7thMan he also skipped H and I, yet did all 3 in the doobly-do (description) ;)

  • ...anyone else notice the Zelda poster?

  • I searched google images for Kardassians instead of cardassians by mistake. I do not regret it.

  • I want to know if Hank dressed up the turkey at all during this video and if so, how many times? Because I loved that google doodle.

  • i enjoy doing battle with violence

  • Feeling intensely cool when you know the answers to all the chemistry questions

  • Where I am the letter Y was "why are you applying for this position" (in the UK.)

Lol - we ask Google to answer our job interview questions for us -___-

  • i don't know if this is true but i heard yawns were contagious because we feel like the yawner is stealing out oxygen so the yawnee yawns to get it back

i can't verify that i just heard it from someone

  • I yawned while reading top two comments.

  • WHY IS HANK GREEN SO INTELLIGENT??

  • @lilmztrini I'm not sure that it's intelligence more so that it's knowledge. One tends to pick up many facts and learns many things through out life. He's lived for a while, so he picked up facts throughout the years. Simple. Oh and no, I'm not saying he's not intelligent, this video just represents knowledge more than intelligence.

  • Flamingos don't eat pink food... they eat blue green algae and its some chemical in that that turns them pink.

    Disappointing Hank!

  • @Kabloomybuzz They eat SHRIMP, which is PINK.

  • @Keister321 Shrimp are part of the diet that turn flamingos pink... but shrimp don't turn flamingos pink because they are pink. Blue green algae is the main influence on their colouring because they contain CAROTENOIDS Shrimp contain a small amount but blue green algae has more. Also, SHRIMP are only PINK when they are cooked

FLAMINGOS ARE NOT PINK BECAUSE THEY EAT PINK FOOD, THEY ARE PINK BECAUSE THEIR DIET CONTAINS CAROTENOIDS.

    I repeat, disappointing Hank..

  • Why are Jews Liberal??...lmao.

  • LOL why ARE we here?

  • DON'T GO WATCH WARM BODIES (in august, i think) IT WILL DESTROY THE DEFINITION OF ''ZOMBIE'' LIKE TWILIGHT DID WITH VAMPIRES!!!

  • "Why are noble gases nonreactive? Because their electron orbitals are filled. Duh."

    Hank, you are my favorite.

  • On the blue veins, red light blocked note; How come when you shine a torch against your hand only the red light gets through?

  • @itsciwi to fuck with our minds! :D

  • please please please i want to see more of these things

  • TFTBA

  • Well also the statistics are: 1/3 of all people you will meet will be Asian so yeah we all want to outdo everyone else

  • "Well, dear Googler..."

  • Right on

  • "I would venture a guess and say that they're not imagining each other complexly." And that is why Hank Green is made of awesome. I love this video.

  • Vlogbrothers !!!!! So cool I just susbscribed .

  • Vlogbrothers drinking game: take a drink whenever Hank readjusts his glasses.

  • Impressive but here is the real question, Why do nerds like crappy sci-fi and zelda?

  • i don't understand why republicans are stupid because I'm english can someone explain

  • @madwooookie If you're lucky enough to not have to deal with them on a daily basis, please, spare yourself the frustration and don't bother learning why. I envy you.

  • yawns are contagious because the mirror neurons (a bit of the brain that deals with being a compliant member of society largley) sets up a mimic response.

  • You talk faster than me... Respect earned...

  • When Hank yawned, I yawned. Apparently, yawns are contagious over the internet and backwards through time too.

  • @LoZHP1D reading that made me yawn!

  • @LoZHP1D It's called a motor neurone response :)

  • @LoZHP1D just got to the part of the video where he explained that...sorry :L

  • you yawned, I yawned...i just yawned again

  • FYI hank carpet baggers are white northerners in post civil war america who went down to the south to help out the oppressed blacks and help bring equality. Which ultimately failed but the idea was nice. They are called carpetbaggers because they often came down south with nothing but what they could fit into a carpet bag.

  • YOU SKIPPED H!!! why did you do that?? do you hate h's?!?!

  • 2:13 Cardassians :) Gul Dukat greatest villain ever

  • Just did this with "why are O___" and got "why are obtuse angles socially unacceptable?" What?

  • *forces

  • I have a theory on why zombies are so popular! In today's society, individuality is treasured. Putting people into stereotypes or profiling is frowned upon because it takes away that persons individuality and forcing them to be something they might not be. We are all allowed to be our own person and That's Great! Zombies on the other hand represent the opposite of this. They are one huge, unthinking, cruel, and disgusting mass, all of them are the same! This is why I think zombies are popular.

  • See, I keep telling my family that grapes are bad for dogs, but their reaction is constantly, "I've never heard that (so it must not be true). I've heard onions are bad for dogs, but not grapes (therefore it must not be true)." Then they feed one of our dogs a grape, and every time I basically turn into the -are you f-ing kidding me- meme. This is ridiculous.

  • you made me yawn :'(

  • oh lord, i love this man.

  • carpetbaggers were poor people who moved north from the south in search for jobs, and their bags that held their stuff were made of scraps of carpet.

  • @AbelsKeeper541 LIES! Carpetbaggers were actually what southerners called northerners who migrated south after the civil war to gain political and economic influence in the face of the exconfederates. They were called carpetbaggers because they were said to be able to fit all of their belongings in a carpet bag (meaning they weren't planning on staying in the South for long.)

  • @scoobysnaxlova touche. I remembered the term from a social studies class in elementary school, and tried to piece together my memory of what was said about them. Obviously, I didn't do a very good job, lol. When in doubt, Wikipedia...

  • why are we here... oh lord you're asking google????

    gets me every time

  • We do know why yawns are contagious. Seriously dude, look it up.

  • Several Asian countries have longer and harsher school days, such as Japan... And if I remember correctly, they also have a higher suicide rate in young people...

  • 3:35 Hank you bastard. (yawn)

  • LEGEND OF ZELDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • Obviously hank does not watch the real housewives of new jersey

  • I yawned.

  • @xKiyuri me too

  • "John I will see you on Monda- Wednesda- Friday. :D"

  • This watermelon will not hatch

  • @darkling222 No, carpetbaggers were Northerners that moved south after the Civil War, during Reconstruction. They were called carpetbaggers because they packed everything into a carpet-like material, signifying that they had to pack quickly.

  • if you looked at all the top results america really hates their politicians

  • Carpetbaggers where the secret WW2 airplane pilots that flew highly classified "Special Operations." It was done by The American 8th Air Force and Britians RAF (Royal Air Force) and they delivered arms, supplies and secret agents into enemy occupioed Europe. But I don't know why they where called that. I think it was just a code name.

  • your book shelves are distracting XD

  • The Skyward Sword poster behind you was released in 2009. It was the single piece of concept art used to entice people to buy the game.

  • The food flamingos eat is green and blue. The 'it's pink' thing is a myth. (:

  • some viruses are so large that other viruses infect them.

  • As for asians- I know at least Korea has 10 hour school days, so education is highly valued. Not sure about other asian countries though.

As for yawning- it evens the pressure in your head. When you see someone else do it, your mind thinks there is a pressure change outside then makes you yawn to even it up again.

    The more you know! :D

  • Can lessons be taught like this in schools? (In the form of random/interesting facts pertaining to the subject at hand being blurted out in enthusiastic ways, that is.) I think it would be much more stimulating and memorable than the monotone lecture and transcript regurgitation most of my teachers seemed to be so fond of.

  • I know some Republican Jews. Just sayin.

  • Interesting you ask?

The main theme song of Skyward Sword is actually the series' "Zelda's Lullaby" reversed.

  • Comment removed

  • holy crap, when you yawned I yawned..

  • Grapes skins are bad for dogs...you can feed them the insides

  • They are called carpetbaggers because they use a carpet as a suitcase.

  • The reason yawns are contagious is because when you see someone yawn, your body thinks, "Hey, there's not enough oxygen in the air!", which isn't good for it so your body yawns to try and get as much oxygen as it possible can before the inevitable happens. In other words, our bodies are selfish and want all the oxygen that's left for itself.

  • Two words...So good

  • I think my biomed class asked the enzymes question through google that day... AHHHH!!!!

  • i actually yawned after you haha

  • They are called carpetbaggers because they made cheep bags to carry their belongings out of carpet scraps. This was during the reconstruction period of American history.

  • "'Why are we here?' Oh, Lord, you're asking Google?!" ...That part made me crack up so, so hard. I love you, Hank.
