I swear Marines patrol youtube for videos of Army soldiers taking time to relax and have fun just so they can come in and broadcast how "professional" and "squared away" they are and how "jacked up" the Army is. military training as a whole is getting more relaxed sadly enough I say the troops in all branches have it easier now. I joined the Army in 99 and I see the difference in these 12 years since then and I'm sure my dad who joined in 75 will say I had it easier than he did.
Maybe not easier but more efficient, we have been in 2 wars for 11 years now. And I think the military is getting smarter on how they train. Yelling and cleaning tiles with a tooth brush is not going to work no more. The second they walk foot on their initial basic training it all focused on making a warrior get ready for the war were in right now. They don't yell as much to make room to train these people to succeed in our current conflict.

Non combat MOS IT is pretty laid back. Our DS's used to do all kinds of crazy shit. One of the, Joenks I think, used to send us on covert missions to C company to steal their rocks. Another one named McKnight had us charge right through their barracks at a double time once. Basic is nothing like this, lol.
Ha all i got to say is i think the army is so immature sometimes you would never see a Marine DI present or past breaking his military bearing to be stupid let alone while someone was video taping
@0321usmc1775 It was probably near the end, and truth is, it was not basic, it was Advanced Individual Training...very close to regular duty, and things are not as harsh as they were in basic, (though I would be forced to admit, though, that, from what I've heard about recent policy changes in the Army, they need to go back to the way it was and not coddle the weak. Attrition rate in army basic used to be 18%; now they want 7%...that ain't going to cut it for me!)

when went through AIT as a 13F in Ft. Sill, it was like a continuation of basic training. we weren't allowed to have phones, cameras, laptops, or anything else that was not military issue, besides a set of civilian clothes.

this is AIT...completely different to Basic Training...I stil remember the first day of AIT....we got there at 2:00a.m....and the Drill Sergent told us....if you are hungry there is a snack machine and a soda machine down the hall way....we were looking at each other...like...he most be messing with us...but no...he was serious...and we were allowed to eat what ever we wanted at the DFAC...!!!

This is a reason why the discipline structure sucks. You can't have NCO's fooling around with soldiers who are in training like that. There has to be that boundery that seperates fun from discipline. To be fair to him, we were on our last day of AIT (not basic, which was a lot more strict). And we had cameras, laptops and everything since day 1. It was at ft. Lee VA.
I'm just not used to AIT, I guess. I came through OSUT. It just bothers me that people judge all army basic on stuff like this, when others go through hell and get represented based on this stuff. I just wish that all training up to reaching your real unit would remain somewhat strict. But hey, I'm just a soldier. The army's been doing it, and successfully, for over 200 years, so who am I to question it.

It is where you go for your Training Path and your PreReq. BCT is the combat training. In AIT, you can earn the right to leave and go around town. The only time AIT is all about combat is with a combat MOS and then it is OSUT. OSUT is AIT and BCT combined. Got it?

This is a reason why the discipline structure sucks. You can't have NCO's fooling around with soldiers who are in training like that. There has to be that boundery that seperates fun from discipline. I'm not saying to not make the best of things. I'm saying there is a time and place for everything but a Drill Instuctor should never put him or herself in that type of situation. And then gettin vided and put on YT? C'mon.

Don't judge the army based on this. I'm sorry and wish not to offend, but this type of basic training is a joke. If every soldier is a rifleman first, as it tries to say, then why don't all soldiers get combat arms training style. Our drills never joked around like this, No cameras, no sitting while a drill sergeant was around, no smiling while the drill sergeants talked to us, And definitely no vending machines.

I'm just not used to AIT, I guess. I came through OSUT. It just bothers me that people judge all army basic on stuff like this, when others go through hell and get represented based on this stuff. I just wish that all training up to reaching your real unit would remain somewhat strict. But hey, I'm just a soldier. The army's been doing it, and successfully, for over 200 years, so who am I to question it.

@cholostreet That's way too much luxury. We were never that laxed with DS's nor did we have our cameras, laptops, or phones unless we had a pass on Sunday (and that wasn't often either).

@Cheamilion They joke around because they earned the right to. The had just finished basic training which is by far the toughest training you will ever get as an enlisted man. Plus, the DI's are real people and no matter how much they smoke you, all they want you to do is succeed. The title clearly says AIT, the only soldiers that don't get to have fun at AIT are infantrymen.

They are allowed to have recreational time and this is when you learn that Drill Sergeants aren't just on your ass or "mean" but rather they have experience and are doing their job, A drill sergeant doesn't forget that they used to be a soldier too but will only tolerate as much disrespect as any other man.

@Cheamilion I can tell you were never in the military because you would not mistake AIT for a fucking BCT. AIT is Advanced Individual Training. It is where you go for your Training Path and your PreReq. BCT is the combat training. In AIT, you can earn the right to leave and go around town. The only time AIT is all about combat is with a combat MOS and then it is OSUT. OSUT is AIT and BCT combined. Got it?

Don't sound like you're in the military cause you don't fuckin have attention to detail nor know not to assume. And I'm in combat arms, and never done this AIT bullshit where respect is shown not to matter, teaching the soldiers common military courtesies don't even matter.
