I guess I must have had my 3 year anniversary as well sometime back in June... I missed it so maybe I'll do a '3 years of Mr Funny' special marking his 3rd year which will be later this month instead!
and wow - 'hot or not', haven't heard or thought about that site for a while, although I did prefer the follow up site 'rate my boobs' ;)
You missed your anniversary also? We're a couple of hopeless sods. With your imagination I know you'll make those lemons into lemonade. Or melons. Or wait ... I still have a membership card to 'rate my boobs'. It's passed my bed time!
re the 'aging on YT point' - you are absolutely right. I would doubt that with the exception of very special occasions I would rarely take photos of myself, but due to YT I have a documented evidence/video of exactly how I have looked over the last 3 years. I guess I must be like a fine wine! ;)
What's interesting to me, and also sad ... is that there will come a time - if this continues at the present rate for many years - that we will have vloggers passing away that we've felt we've come to know and love. It would be like many big virtual funerals. The whole concept of virtual community funerals will be something none of us has ever experienced.
Not that I'm looking forward to any of this. I don't know why I'm thinking macabre thoughts!
true but as we have said before, there are many similarities between YT friends and 'real life friends' in the way that you gain & lose friendships, and that will include (inevitably) a point when YouTubers you know die.
But hey, that's not today so let's live for the moment!!! :)
I've been here 3 years too but i didn't have a camera worth using to make my craptacular videos till about a year and a half ago.I just posted a video that might work as a response to this i might respond with it later.Great video too and congrats.
MIne too! August 12 - I've been here 3 years myself - and your thoughts are provocative :) Personally, I like your YT name :) I think I've explored various creative outlets here and this opportunity to share our creativity and thoughts. No matter what happens, I see you and those of whom have entered my heart permanently - until YT throws me away, I'll keep coming back :) Change is life - not only here in cyberspace (or our second life) but right here in our first life.
I love the glasses. The safety pin is a marvelous grace note. I just misplaced a pair of cheap sunglasses, both ear pieces held on by paper clips. I don't want new ones. I wan the old ones back.
I wonder if you know how happy you made me by coming here. When I try to evoke the past with my imagery, it's always rewarded by seeing your comment. You 'get' it, just as I know exactly what you mean by wanting the old ones back. I thank you :)
Thanks for the response John. & congrats on your own 3 year anniversary. it's always pleasing to inspire someone to male a video.
I'm happy with my own username. But, agree that it would be nice to be able to change it. At the time we just make up any name, not realising how important it may become in the future. That username becomes us, whether we like it, or not.
Personally i like your name. I can't imagine you as anyone else :)
Too funny, the timing of this, because Diana and I were just having a conversation yesterday about how we wish YT would let us change our user names. I'm happy with the one I have now, but I HATED the first one.
For the record, and for what it's worth, I like your username.
Yep, I agree. This will still be here, in whatever form, because it's fulfilled a need sorta like TV did.
I LOVE continuing to embrace all this crazy stuff.
You know "OhCurt" is one of the most creative names out there. If one good thing came from the closure of your original channel - in my mind - it's the name. Love it.
I do believe this is one of the funnest things I've done to date! Let's keep that ongoing historical document going :)
Thanks, John - I really lucked out in terms of user names. It was born out of frustration as I was trying to come up with a better AOL user name and kept finding all variations on my first name taken. So I leaned back, let out this huge sigh, and said aloud to myself, "Oh, Curt.!"
A couple seconds later I figured that might be a cool name, so I claimed it.
In 2005 I ditched it because it had invited some lecherous comments around the web... NOW I invite those comments!
Congrats John. Three years is a long time in Internet years. I first came across the site when I was using the now defunct Yahoo360 blogging site, and got hooked. For a long time, all I did was watch, rate and comment until some other Tubers encoraged me to take that mighty first step of uploading a video.
I remember being nervous as hell about doing it, but from all the positive comments afterwards, it made me want to do it again. Now the camera holds no fear for me and it's fun!
Thank you! It's always been funny to me how true your words are regarding 'internet' time. I opened an account for the purpose of doing a tribute video to a YouTuber I admired, with the hopes of doing a similar type of comedy that he did. But I had only been on YT for a week.
Believe it or not, I still have a hard time talking to that machine!
Three years is quite a while... I'll be at three years in a couple of months too... I started watching Peter, then Terry, then a few more, followed by a lot more... My only regret, John, was that it took a near miss from meeting you to discover your channel even though I was wondering at one point what everyone was doing in bed :)
Well here's a comment that made me seriously laugh out loud! I'm glad that bed in brought so many people together and I'm glad I made a great friend by 'not' meeting you lol
Hi John. Should I go from the date I opened the account or from the first video? In my case that's 52 days difference, as I originally only opened it to use subscriptions.
Looking back at my older videos after I started appearing in them... I'm shrinking!
So did Tia - she opened her account in 2005 I think but never used it. I opened mine for the purpose of actually responding to someone who did comedy sketches and raps - a tribute video. After that is how I found vloggers.
I actually opened mine in May 2006 I think-but just to leave a comment on a video I was linked to, I can remember the video but not where I was linked from! I've probably joined a whole bunch of sites just to make one off comments-and that was what I did with youtube. I had no idea of what youtube really was until months later when someone told me all about vloggers, geriatric in particular and that's when I returned under my neglected account and got the bug!
THE 3 YEAR CLUB!! woo Im in it too! Yes i think that it already has become a resource, more than a social site. even if people search for pranks and boob shots, they are primarily searching here, thru the corp Google affiliation! The next generation will GET why we did this!! Great vid and points made on this!! Featurable here, i hope the YT guys hear their names!! hahah
We used to be enthralled by recording and playing back our voices on a tape player! How things have moved on! I wonder if teen magazines even have penpal pages anymore!
Already I don't think there is anyone left in the world who isn't on facebook-or has been on facebook, or is stubbornly refusing to join facebook!
Youtube just wasn't marketed as a social network site, that developed as a sideline, and now it's being discouraged-but we will prevail!
Congrats on your 3rd year! And yes, I am watching gravity winning through my vids! I'm not so sure that's a good thing...lol It's been a great ride on YT. I've met so many wonderful people that I wouldn't have had the chance to meet without being here. I'm moving towards my 3rd year too! Ahhhh...cheers to the modern people! :-)
LOVE your glasses and the safety pin adds the right touch of "punk" attitude! :-)
awesome vido john, really makes you think ey lol i looked back at my firebreathing video and even then i look so much different to how i do now and even small things like my mentality have changed over the years ive been on here
Man, as every year goes by, we're never the same person we were and it's pretty trippy that we can actually see this going on on YouTube - physically and mentally!
3 years ... it is really a milestone. I am also having my 3 years anniversary in this year ... October 1st.
Hehe, I also looked back to my first videos ... omg ... I looked a bit different and my English was also worse than nowadays.
Internet really changed a lot ... I remember in September 1994 when I used CompuServer the first time and a few years later tried the real internet ... nothing to compare with today. But social networks have been in that time in forums only.
I remember BBS Bulletin Boards in the late 80's. Commodore Computers had a VicModem that you could dial local or long distance numbers and connect and post. Think of the movie War Games from 1984. Those were revolutionary times!
I can't believe that you've stuck with this channel for so long Sven - because now thinking about it, 3 years is quite a long time. Thanks for your friendship man!
That's where it comes from? That's fucking fascinating. I love what's behind people's names.
You've been a constant with brilliant comments that I always look forward to. I don't know how you do it, but I'm glad that you do! Thank you man, I'm going to wear those Stripes and Stars on a jacket!
I regretted my name months after creating it. PiP was too short, or taken one or the other. Totally aging, I can't stand it, but well worth it considering our experiences with each other. Congrats on your three years, I think I past mine, not sure lol
Vanity is my favorite sin. Sometimes, I can be worse than Betty Davis when it comes to making sure I look good! Western society does tend to treat men better with what is considered 'sexy', etc. and it truly isn't fair. Brooke Shields was talking about being 44 and not being to get a part, unlike men at 44.
I'll tell you what though, I wouldn't trade what I've learned for looking 19!
Happy 3rd, my friend! You really made some great points! Funny, today I was telling a young woman in my department how important it is for someone my age to keep up - one step at a time, new technology is manageable. But if we skip a step or two, it's overwhelming and past my a bility to cope. Ya know? But really, social networking is just an updated pen pal deal... Really. Oh, and I did marry someone I met online - not on YT but online nonetheless.
Updated pen pal ... absolutely true. Humans have always had a need to connect. We can't skip those steps - no matter how comfortable it is to skip them! Thanks for the congrats but congrats to YOU for being one of those I consider incredibly ahead of their time and meeting online :)
good commentary. :)
