Well, what a fucking bummer that some asshole record company executive felt like they had to come along and disable this audio. Does anyone in their right mind really believe that having this video with audio up on youtube is going to have any negative effect whatsoever on the income generated by the band? How ridiculous! If anything, it's going to increase the band's income as the only thing they are making any appreciable amount of money off of now days is touring, not album sales.
No one can aquire the right to stop others from using what they have copied. It doesn't matter how upset I am about someone copying my work or idea.
Try introducing the ideas of patents & copyright to the inhabitants of a small desert island and see how long you go before getting punched in the face.
It is ONLY possible to introduce it by use of FORCE to supress dissenters.
Making it look legitimate takes a lot of PR over many years.
I'm assuming that the audio was removed because it violated a copyright. I think the whole copyright thing is getting out of hand (that's probably a huge understatement). A band like this should be begging people to use their songs. It's only going to rekindle interest in their songs. Instead, they are slowly fading away without a rejuvenation of any kind. Pretty sad. I think of the future demises of You Tube will be the copyright revolution.
This represents a band at their Zenith of their creative highs and talent their Magnum-Opus and to restrict the audio tracks is no less than WMG tight-as ( with 2 S's) bullshit! No I don't remember doing acid that night but I use to do alot of antics I regret today but thats not up for discussion.......... Steve
@stolendolin No matter what- you can always count on Kansas to sound great and set fire to emotions and memories. At 45, I grew up with it - My twins (boy and a girl) at 15 months old already enjoy the music and will grow up with it- Kansas and Steve's solo material is like pizza: even when its not perfect live its damn good and you want it anyway! @Joestatler What the fuck is that guy doing? I've seen a couple of videos of this band doing this song live and that guy is always like, flipping out like he's in the middle of an acid trip or something. O_o

Don't these WMG assholes realise that it's videos like this on youtube that keep the interest in Kansas going? Rush has tons and tons of pro-shot footage all over the net, a lot of it from concert videos that Rush paid for, but came to parties unknown. Rush lets these videos play, because it's useless to hide them and they are the best promo content available. WMG sucks tiny cocks; they can't get anything bigger.
@bearmare Thats absolutely right!!!! according to advertising the social media is the best way to make promotion today. These WMG morrons don't seem to know about this.
Lighten up. This just happened and maybe it's a good thing for a while to stir the anger and send a message to those asswipes over at WMG. Calling this extremely dedicated Kansas fan a loser is way over the line.
One reason Steve's voice may sound so "off" in this song is that they usually close with this song, so after 2 hours of jumping around and singing, he's worn out! Because in '80, his voice was still at its best. I personally just thought he sounds tired, out of breath. And as for why he's half-naked, damn, look at him! He was muscular and totally in shape in '80, when everyone else was coke/heroin skinny (remember 80 was still the disco era, fitness wasn't "in" yet). If ya got it, show it off!

It seems like steve doesn't hit the higher notes like he could, and when he tries it doesn't sound good. Maybe it's just that he's out of breath from all the dancing around he does here. lol.
two things, 1 I didnt like that they slowed it down! And two what is that spikey guitar that guy is playing? its really cool PS Ceck out my lame version on my page.... jemjoesatch
The "spikey guitar" is a Dean (I don't know the model though). Dean was a modestly popular guitar mfgr in the '70s & early/mid-'80s, and Kerry & Rich both played them a lot for a few years. They may have had an endorsement deal at the time -- I don't remember.
Rik Emmett of Triumph also played a Dean guitar modeled after Gibson's "Flying V" for awhile. They had a small roster of some other big name players as well, and also some scantily-clad babes in their magazine ads! They're still around.
I hadn't thought about Dean guitars in years, but then your post prompted me to check out their Web site. It's DeanGuitars - dot -c*m (trying to evade the spam filter here). If you click on the "multimedia" link, there's another link for "Dean Classics" that shows their old guitars. It looks like Kerry's guitar in this video might have been a "Dean Elite" model.
If the lead singer hadn't been jumping around like a loonatic,he wouldn't be out of breath when doing the ballad part of this song which is the best part of the song.
It's not so much a lack of reverb. The problem is that the audio was recorded direct from the soundboard. Because of that, you don't hear what it really sounded like in the arena 'cuz you're hearing the signals direct from the instruments and microphones instead of how they sounded coming out of the amplifier speakers & vocal monitors. Plus, there's very little ambient noise from the crowd.
I hate soundboard recordings. Rush's "Exit Stage Left" album sounds like this too: dull & lifeless.
ah i see, good point. what would the alternative be, mixing the soundboard recording with mics further out? or just miking the whole thing from the stage?
Yeah, the latter: miking the whole thing from the stage, recording it to multi-track tape, then mixing it properly. A lot of bands used to hire a mobile truck (like an RV) outfitted with recording equipment and record that way ("Walley Heider's Recording Unit" was a famous one). In fact, the line in "Smoke on the Water" that says, "to make records with a mo-bile," refers to that. Mobile recording trucks could be used for either live or studio recording.
I'll just add that most really good live recordings aren't from the soundboard. With soundboard-derived recordings, you don't capture the venue's acoustics, or the 'airiness' (for lack of a better term) around a microphone, amp or speaker. As a result, it all sounds dull and sterile.
Some bands use soundboard recordings 'cuz it's cheaper and easier to record & mix that way, but most are typically done just for the band to listen to rather than for the public's ears.
Let me first say that you know your shit and I agree with everything you said! Another approach would be to mix a post effects line off the board with a live mic strategically placed out in the hall! Some more tweaking afterwards and you get a fairly decent live recording!(This may be a derivation of the mobile truck method).Setting up a third and separate system(besides hall mix and monitor mix) would be ideal but most bands never wanted the extra hassles and expense!(Your suggestion)
Also wanted to add I was a soundman for a few years and all three situations that we are discussing were different!(I realize that Ken knows this) Mix for a recording and the live show sounded like shit! Mix for the live show and the recording sounded like shit! Monitor mix was separate. So really a third setup was needed!Ken's right that most of these posts of live concerts that sound flat are soundboard recordings done just for the band! If a band nails it on one of these they're awesome!
Yeah, good points. A really good live recording has to be planned as such, with proper mic'ing, recording and mix-down with high-end equipment. Just dubbing a cassette off a soundboard didn't cut it!
My old friend Bearses. Have you checked out the videos (audio really with a slide show) that I've started posting? You may like some of them! As far as being a crazy bastard, I try and I know your off the map!
