  • My old 1st mate on our tug used to play this tune on his banjo at night when we were cold, wet and a long way from home. Trouble was with the condensation he often ended up with a ker-plunk and had to keep re-tuning! Happy days long ago

  • im such a huge fan of yours!

  • Great stuff- really sweet sound on the banjo!

  • Thanks Redbeard!! I just replied to your message too.

  • I have been watching all of your videos, and they all have that certain "authentic" touch. I love the tone from the gut and skin. Very nice touch. Loved it.

  • Thank you for those encouraging words!!!

    All the best,

    Mac

  • where can i get tablature on how to play this song!? that was awesome

  • Very nice version of Boatman. You might like the one I learned from John Hilt of Tannersville, VA some 40+ years ago. It is on my You Tube site.

    Fred Coon

  • That's a nice version you've got too Fred!! I've never heard two people play the last part the same way - great tune with a lot of possibilities.

  • Hi guys, just wondering if you could tell me the tuning for this on your banjo. Devilish good stuff

  • The string relationship is the same as

standard banjo G tuning. From 5th to 1st

gDGBD - What makes the difference on this old gut string banjo is that the string tension is less so the tone is lower. Instead of the open strings producing a G chord they produce a D chord. From 5th to 1st the strings are

dADF#A Hope this helps. Thanks for your comment.

  • whats the difference between gut string an nylon? are gut strings made from animals an nylon is cotton??

  • Modern gut strings are made from grazing animals (sheep, goat or cow). Nylon is a synthetic material made from coal. Gut strings can be as much as 10 times the cost of nylon ones.

  • sound mellow with the cat gut-watch out for the PETA folks

  • No cats were harmed in the making of this video!!

  • I agree with Dick. The only problem is that now I`ve got to kill the cat for a hide head for mine.....

Great tune, beautifully played and the banjo sounds growly good!

  • I Like that description - growley good!! Thanks for that. How about catfish for the hide!

  • Hmmm... Good idea. If folks didn`t like my playing they could just blame it on the smell.

  • What joyful sounds! Thanks again for another great video ;-)

  • Thank you for those comments!!

  • Great sound!!!(^_-)

  • Arigatoh!!! to you too!!!

  • Once again a super video.

  • Great comment!! Thank you.

  • superduper

  • ooby dooby - Thanks J

  • The re-stringing of the banjo sounds great. Five stars for the playing and the overall sound.

  • Thanks for that!! I'm like a kid with a new toy.
