I have internet and phone with my local cable company and my phone is $39.95 a month. They do have a surcharge of $15 if you only have one service, and you have to have internet for Ooma or any other VOIP to work. Even with the surcharge I'm still saving quite a bit over a year's time.
I wouldn't say Ooma is as good as a landline or the VOIP phone I have with the cable company, it's about 80-90% the quality, which for me is fine because I don't make that many calls anyway.
I've had Ooma for almost one year and I regret the purchase. The system is finicky, noisy and can be time-consuming to get working. The quality is marginal. Only AFTER you commit financially are you allowed to sign on to the website and see the thousands of unhappy customers posting on the technical support boards struggling to get their Ooma Telos working. Telephone tech support is from outside the country and the worst I've had.
I have had ooma for few years now. Very happy with it overall. $3.50 monthly tax and fee? Since when? Other than the initial investment on the hardware and porting the phone number, I pay nothing else to ooma.
@kousapex They had a deal with the old Ooma hub that didn't require monthly taxes, but otherwise you pay taxes. I just bought my telo and when you activate it only you have to put in your CC number to pay for the taxes and premier if you want it.
Don't forget about Ooma Premiere which is $10 a month. I think it's worth it because if your Internet goes down, you can forward calls to your cell phone. You can also send unwanted callers straight to voice mail.
