  • This is bollocks.

  • Gay !!!!!!

  • I hope they are ashamed of themselves after all these time has passed

  • Do you all realize how fucking stupid you sound getting mad at this? It's a fucking demo from way back when DCFC was a young, inexperienced band just trying to have fun. Getting angry over this is like removing Peyton Manning from your fantasy team because you found a clip of him dropping a ball in a game with his friends when he was 12.

  • I love Death Cab for Cutie and The Smiths, and Zooey Deschanel, its just a song

  • WHO CARES. IT'S JUST SO GOOD.

  • I think everyone's being a bit harsh, yeah it could never compare with The Smiths version(what could?) and DCFC got the lyrics wrong, which I heard they're embarrassed about, but they were very young at the time. I think they just did it from memory because they loved the band. It's still an alright cover, despite the funny lyric changes xD

  • I like Death Cab, honest, but I like The Smiths better. Now a cover isn't necessarily meant to be exactly the same, but this is just awful. I blame Zooey Deschanel.

  • @MFGreth this cover was recorded before Zooey's relationship with Ben Gibbard

  • @zonnyjames doesn't matter. everything wrong in the world is her fault.

  • It isn't really a cover if you change the words, but still good effort

  • lol, "I'm Just a country boy" vs "A jumped-up pantry boy"

  • Why doesn't anyone realize they probably changed the lyrics on purpose...?

  • i think this is a very good cover, despite the misinterpretation of the lyrics.

  • It's catchy. But it's just not the same..

  • @iluvmusik2705: oh okay you would side with death cab for cutie, you emo bitch. Go slit your wrists and die no one care about you and you're weight problem.

Morrissey was the shit, too perfect for fag bands to try and be all gay and shit it with it.

  • it's better than the smiths lol.

anyone who thinks it sucks because the lyrics were changed is dumb as fuck

  • The Smiths are better, of course, but I its not bad.

  • it would be ok if they just got the fucking lyrics right they got most of it right but its let down so much by the fucking up of the lyrics

  • i dont care what people think, i love this cover loads

  • I love this.

  • I LIKE THIS SOOO MUCH BETTER F*CK THE SMITHS

  • @smfallc hey, hey. Slow down there. It's a great cover. Of an awesome band.

  • Gruesome.

    THE WORD IS GRUESOME.

  • Thick Americans. "I'm just a country boy who never knew his place"? How dare they.

  • @wdansey uhhhhhhh its called a cover

  • @Chacha5678 A terrible one.

  • this is by far the worst cover ive heard....sorry its just terrible.

  • @1blondietuco1 ok, thx.

  • i am gouging my entire body with forks

  • Hardly a fan of the Smiths. (That voice is just awful)

    That said... Great cover.

  • Hmm. I love Death Cab for Cutie, love the Smiths' music and lyrics, hate Morrissey's voice, and really don't like this cover. I think that means EVERYONE ON THE INTERNET will hate me.

  • I love death cab but this is awful. Ben Gibbard just doesn't have the confidence to pull this off and the the guitarist sounds like pure doodoo because he is covering up a great bass line.

  • Wow. Someone should really buy a metronome for the drummer.

  • Wow, this is shit.

  • @CableShark123 did you say you liked this version better?? HAHAHAHA you are pathetic and dont know anything about good music!!

  • who gives a shit, its a good song...

  • when most bands do covers, they usually change up the lyrics on purpose.

  • maybe they meant to get the lyrics wrong?

i dunno.. it just seems like someone woulda corrected them..

anyway i like this version more, and i love death cab.

  • The point of covering a song isn't to make it sound exactly like the original. If you wanted to hear the original Smiths version, why not just listen to that one? Death Cab covered this version and made it their own instead of playing the original the same way it's been played a million different times. I suppose my point is this- if you don't like it, don't listen to it.

  • @emmagraceless People clicked on this to see what it was like, and maybe they felt that it sucked. People also have the right to express their opinions, even when they dislike something. Sorry if you don't agree with it. :/

  • thats... shit.

    compared to the original

  • To all those that hate this cover:

    1) Ben didn't try to get the right lyrics. They were just having fun with it.

    2) You can't complain about production because this is from a demo from 1997 & the quality's pretty good considering it was just a demo.

    3) It's not even that much different from the original.

  • Dead, buried and never the same again. Congratualtions Death Cab For Cutie.

  • I listened to 25 seconds of this, absolute worse cover ever. Good job.

  • This song is amazing.

  • I can't even... What the fuck did they do to a Smiths classic????? I love DCFC but this is horrendous.

  • People have pretty much said what is to be said, but I wanna feel important to lol

It IS a cover, so there's no "butchering" it as @kingasdo111 said, because it's an interpretation, or version, not a copy. The lyrics were changed to give the singer, Ben Gibbard, more meaning when he's singing.

I personally like this version better, not because I'm arrogant or lack musical taste, but because it resonates with me in its own way. Don't be so critical just move on :)

  • Ugh, they butchered the guitar part, they made it sound like that fucking Jet song.

  • @kingasdo111 What's wrong with Jet?

  • @maalbe987 I don't have anything against Jet personally, I was referring to that song "Are You Gonna' Be My Girl", I don't think The Smiths would want their music to be associated with an inane radio tune like that.

  • @kingasdo111 Technically Are You Gonna Be My Girl (2003) came out years before this song (1998). So if what you're saying is correct, then Are You Gonna was inspired by this cover instead of vice-versa.

  • @maalbe987 I wasn't saying anything inspired anything. They just have a similar guitar part which I happen to dislike.

  • The lyrics are wrong. I like Death Cab, but I think covering Smiths songs is a bad idea. Usually the original version of a song is better, and if it's a band that was fairly popular, people are likely to get angry.

I don't like this cover and disapprove of the people who said it's better than the 80's Smiths one.

You're dumb. If you don't like the original song, why are you listening to a cover?

  • Wow, is this terrible. The lyrics is all wrong and they've somehow managed to lose all the nuance in the singing AND the guitar part.

  • i like the cover but this song needs to sound more depresing i cant drink to this:(

  • haha this sounds sooo much better then the smiths cheesy 80's version. Just my opinion, who gives a shit about the lyrics ITS A COVER they can do whatever the funk they want haha

  • As usual Smiths fans being elitist and arrogant...People, what's the point of covering a song exactly the same as the original? Also Everyone interprets lyrics differently...Hence the different lyrics to make it more relatable to Ben Gibbard...And not Morrissey. Good cover.

  • I'm such a huge fan of DCFC, and a fan of the smiths, but wow.

They really fucking fucked this one up.

  • I can't be the only one who dislikes the original but loves this version... :/

  • oh i think this sounds terrible!

  • I appreciate that this song is a cover, but if your going to cover something you should atleast get the lyrics right. On some occassions, like this one, changing one lyric changed the meaning of the song. And there's no real emotion in the singers voice, whereas in Morriseys voice you can tell he was feeling something when he wrote it. Good attempt though.

  • Ok, I give them credit for trying, and it's great that they appreciate good music and everything, but really, the lyrics are all wrong, and the feeling and general sentiment that make the original so excellent are completely lost in translation. He sings this with no affect whatsoever, and the guitar part just doesn't live up to Johnny Marr's at all. BUT then again, I guess they are just covering a song from a band they like, and there's no harm in that, eh? Not everyone can be the Smiths ;)

  • I love the Smiths and I LOVE this song and this cover is new and an surprisingly fun and I'm dancing in my chair as I listen to it. It's different then The Smiths but it's a different band that does different music.

  • I think the altered lyrics aren't by mistake at all. Its a bit more of a commentary on the changing world. What would be gruesome in '83 is now crucial in '96. A man could be handsome and well accepted just on that, but now you need the clothes to match if you're to be taken seriously.

  • I liked this one better.

  • lol...

    This man said it's crucial...

Changing that singular word changes the entire meaning of that line, it's gruesome for a reason.

    Absolute shite.

  • @MrTrowzaa I'm most worried about the two bicycle the singer was riding at the same time.

  • lol, on two bicycles...

  • @CheDonVito ROFL

  • This is just bad. I have nothing against Death Cab, but this song shouldn't be covered if you're not willing to put at least an ounce of feeling into it. Fail, a complete fail. Disappointment is not even the right word. Really, I'll take this back in twenty minutes, but I feel that The Smiths are just un-coverable, as they should be, because no one is like Morrissey, no one.

  • @bobbysconscience give this guy credit. he did this in 1997 or something. if you didnt know the smiths song you would completely enjoy this

  • @gerty1032 Fair enough, but can you agree with me that Ben's amount of feeling into this song is absolutely pathetic? Really, I love Death Cab and I do give him credit. But if you were to cover a song you love, wouldn't you put a little heart into it?

  • The smiths made a great song, I like both. I listen to the Smiths for the layed back version, this one is more intense. stop complaining about how they did it wrong. Oh well.

  • Long time morrissey fan. Love me some DCFC though too cause they're one of the commercial bands out there with talent. This cover is ok. Seems like something they didn't take too serious and had fun doing.

  • I am disappoint.

  • I love when bands I like make covers so I can find the original artists and open my ears up to more amazing music, even if the cover (like the Killers doing Shadowplay) is lackluster.

  • It could have been a lot better

  • death cab > the smiths

  • Dear Death Cab For Cutie, please never ruin another Smiths song. Thanks.

  • I'm sick of people complaining about the lyrics, it's a god damned cover and I'm 100% sure that if they wanted to get the lyrics right they would have.

    Deal with it :3

  • I love the Smiths, I love Morrissey...... I think I love Death Cab for Cutie <3

  • i dont get it. why are half the lyrics different?

Also nothing can compare to the smiths and morrissey's voice. It is just needed to make the song

  • i was not aware of this cover. i like the fact they had fun with it, but its not for me really. the original is one of the best songs ive ever heard, no cover will ever do it justice

  • Okay, could they have managed to get more lyrics wrong?

  • @owensalbums I hate people like you. just the existence of your negative attitude stifles creative progress.

  • @owensalbums read @Mclues comment, I really agree with him.

  • I normally like this band but they just slaughtered one of my favorite songs! "It's crucial that someone so handsome should care"? Seriously?

  • hahaha, what the fuck? wrong lyrics?

"it's crucial that someone so handsome should care!"

oh jesus christ. that's fucking ridiculous, why record a song when you don't even know the damn lyrics to the original? fuck!

  • @Lexxii64

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Death Cab probably knew they weren't singing the original lyrics. In fact, as professional musicians, they probably know a lot more about music than you.

    Idiot.

  • @UKStevi How about you go fuck yourself?

  • nice version but getting smiths lyrics wrong should be punishable by death

  • i regret listening to this cover so much!

    the smiths <3

  • Awful.

  • DCFC just went to a whole gayer level.

  • HORRIBLE

  • This rocks.

  • this song is amazing.

death cab has made the song their own.

the cover is not just a carbon copy of the smiths original.

it has elements of both bands though.

    i love the smiths.

and have longer than death cab.

but saying this is talentless, or stupid, or bad, isnt my choice of words.

your entitles to your opinion, but damn. its so different than mine.

  • Wrong lyrics

  • Too much distortion

  • oh dear. not good.

  • i was willing 2 give it a chance, but wow....just no.....

  • its aight

  • I love it :D

  • fail. but i do like it when bands make covers that do sound different than the original.

  • ZERO FUCKIN TALENT!!!

  • @giant71 lame much?

  • @giant71 Really death Cab for cutie? The smiths were around for 5 years. Death Cab is still going strong after a decade. Sorry there's no more shitty 80's romantic comedies for the smiths to put their boring music into.

  • @mtd6886 The Smiths music is a classic, from Marrs bouncing guitar riffs to Morrisseys voice and Lyrics, not to mention Rourkes bass lines

Death Cab uses basic power chords with distortion, and the bass player uses that same crappy repeat over and over on this song, no bounce

Cab is going for more than a decade cus they've yet to write a song as classic as This Charming Man, unlike The Smiths who were around for how many years again?

Cab will be just another band that was on MTV,nothin memorable

  • @Bomberlost aawww, how sweet, if thats an "insult," then hit me back up when you get bored of mediocre bands : ) and are more open to genres

  • @changobilly22

ive really yet to hear DCFC on Mtv.

they are too busy playing Rihanna, Wiz Khalifa, and Justin Bieber.

ive yet to experience them play death cab. you are very lucky for hearing them.

oh and they are two different eras.

    you cant compare the two.

  • @markroar thats because they're old now, a band like this has fans that (unfortunately) are a bunch of idiot little kids who only go along with whatever is on "popular" TV

Im guessing the fan base of people who actually like them for a legitimate reason, like they know the band or actually music like this for some weird reason

as far as lucky? uh no, id change the channel every time they'd come on

Lucky was seeing the Gorillaz or Interpol on MTV

  • @changobilly22

your wrong on so many levels.

the followers of this band arent little idiot kids who found it on "popular" tv.

and i have a big heart for the Gorillaz, and THEY have the idiot kid followers who only know Feel Good Inc.

yeah, there propbably are a couple of kids who supposedly saw this on MTV, but that is such a small ammount its not even legitimate enough to say.

I LOVE the Smiths, i LOVE dcfc.

  • @markroar The Gorillaz at LEAST are arguably a better band, if anything because they've been able to dive into so many genres from punk, hip hop, and very trippy psychedelic stuff

while dcfc play (for the most part) mediocre pop punk mainstream music.

When i said i was lucky to see the Gorillaz on MTV, i didnt mean Feel Good Inc., i ment Clint Eastwood and that was almost (if not) a decade ago.

Although im not disagreein with you on the Gorillaz new fans, they are idiots too. : )

  • @changobilly22

    you are right in parts.

but the gorillaz are mainstrem, sorry to say,

and have you listened to them at all? they are definately not pop punk.

some songs by them are mainstream, but not all, for the most part.

  • @markroar Gorillaz are mainstream now, BUT, they weren't before Demon Days, and ive listened to a couple of dcfc songs, at best, they're mainstream alternative, their riffs are eh, and i havent checked lyrics so i cant say anythin about that

and maybe its just me and my personal preferences and taste, but Ben's voice is too average (granted i love way different voices like Billy Corgan's, Jack White's, and my new favorite Adam Thompson from We Were Promised Jetpacks, you should check them out)

  • @changobilly22

but demon days are what plays on mtv.

no! not mainstream alternative, thats nickelback, and daughtry.

look up tiny vessels, grapevine fires, amd champagne from a paper cup.

and i dont really see any normality, or averageness in Gibbards voice.

look up the postal service also, his other band.

  • @markroar Demon Days are what plays on MTV NOW, not about a decade ago, a decade ago, the only two songs i heard on MTV (and very rarely mind you) were Clint Eastwood and 19-2000

WOW dude, Nickleback and Daughtry are in NO way Mainstream Alternative, they are definitely Mainstream "Rock" but there's no way in hell they're Alternative

Smashing Pumpkins, The White Stripes, Beck are more Mainstream Alternative, and they're still great great bands, maybe even Tegan and Sarah

  • @markroar Demon Days are what plays on MTV NOW, not about a decade ago, a decade ago, the only two songs i heard on MTV (and very rarely mind you) were Clint Eastwood and 19-2000

  • @mtd6886

i will defend dcfc, but never, ever, talk shit on the smiths.

    and 5 years? wtf.

    romantic comedies?

    where have you been.

    god rest your poor soul

  • I would go out tonight, but I haven't got a stitch to wear.

  • I like it, except for the lyric changes. It's definitely not as good as The Smith's version(s), but it's okay.

  • utter crap!

  • @anth00000

go home and be a family man

  • Ruined.Just fucking ruined.

  • fuckin lame

  • This man says it's... crucial?

  • @mikeceedubb

Oh please, you aren't seriously suggesting that Placebo's version is worse than this one.

I'll admit, the dude from Placebo's voice is pretty limited. But people tend to hold Ben up to a certain...standard.

While I'm not a huge DCFC fan, I respect their abilities enough to know that this is a song that never should've seen the light of day.

  • "I'm just a country boy" WTF? Morrissey doesn't sing that :/

But I really like the disortion in the chorus

  • ...I've never heard a cover this bad

  • bullshit

  • it's not one of my favorite covers, although i like that they made it their own. and who cares if they changed the lyrics a little. Morrissey changes them all the time. it doesn't mean they don't know them.

  • I love both The Smiths and Death Cab and this is not a bad cover at all. Of course, it will never compare to the original but this is a pretty good cover, altered lyrics and all. : )

  • Yes, it's a good cover, but really Death Cab? :/ Is it really that hard to google lyrics before you record a song?

  • fuck all y'all, I actually like this.

  • After listening to this. Heavens knows, I'm miserable now......

  • it's not great, but considering some of the horrible smith covers out there (placebo, I'm looking at you), its not horrible i guess.

  • Ok... after 30 times I had listened

    It's an ugly cover

    but I like it

  • if morrisey heard this im pretty sure he would kill himself, what a horrible cover and an even more shitty band, death cab can lick goat ass

  • I like it, but at the same time I don't. There are sometimes where it sounds a bit too "whiny boy". I like the background guitar though. Another thing I don't really like ihow they changed the chorus from "gruesome" to "crucial". It kind of twists what "the charming man" was trying to say."

    I think it's okay overall though! :)

  • @WeAllWumbo I agree. (Nice username btw)

  • Oh god this is awful

  • @DarbysInMontauk The Smiths and Morrissey were just "hipster shit" from a different era. I'm not saying I don't like them, I'm just saying if that's your insult for this, take a look inward.

  • -.-'

  • OMG THIS SUCKS

    THE SMITHS VERSION ROCKS

  • It's an okay cover, but the Smiths can't be beat. It's simple. I do like the guitar around 1:10....it takes balls to do a Smiths cover, and a lot of talent to do it well.

  • well im not a fan of the smiths but i listened to this song and liked it. then i listened to the smiths version and honestly didnt like it. as far as sound i think this one is better

  • if you're complaining about it not sounding like the smiths, why are you listening to it? just go listen to the smiths.

  • @beyahhhhhhhh i hope you get 300 thumbs up for saying the only worthwhile comment on the first page ...

  • @beyahhhhhhhh and also for using a rabb himself quote thats not even real words as your user name

  • @beyahhhhhhhh haha so true, why would a cover sound exactly like the original? what would be the point in that?

  • @beyahhhhhhhh

we would love 2 go listen to the smiths, but u see, we're just have to say something about taking such a great song, perfect song - and doing it in the emo-gay way. we cannot keep our mouths shut about this. in my opinion it is just awful. it is like an abuse ,crime, sin to the song. and don't get me wrong - DCFC are actually pretty great in albums like Somethin About Airplanes & We Have the Facts... - but here they have ruined the freakin amazing song and its their responsablity.

  • @bejAmir Dude, the Smiths INVENTED the "emo-gay way".

  • wow, this is horrible.

  • I understand it's just a cover, but I simply prefer the sound of the original's jangle-pop style guitar riffs than this hard-rock esque version. Just my two cents.

  • Love this! And, just to be clear- a cover is supposed to have its own flavor, its own voice- it's not supposed to be the same as the original so of course it's not going to sound like the original!

Death Cab for Cutie is the best band ever!

  • It makes me feel pain in my balls!!

  • the very first line, the lyrics are wrong. i think it's pretty clear within the first twelve seconds of this song it's going to be terrible.

  • Oh HELL no

  • This is shit!!! Way to slaughter the original song!!

  • Death Cab, please, go die.

  • I hate how does it sounds with american acent

  • how could you fuck up the VERY FIRST WORD of the song?

  • this would be decent if the vocalist didn't suck.

  • Prefer the original but this aint to bad. Not bad for something a bit different. Got a good edge to it

  • Just a found out this is a cover, and I would of been better off not knowing it's a cover just because the original blows compared to this.

  • @SplinterSteel what is that a joke

  • @SplinterSteel 10/10 trolling

  • @SplinterSteel You are sorely mistaken.
