My dad abused my brother and I (and our mother too.) My mother spanked us. There IS a difference. I love both of my parents with my whole heart. My mother scares me more than my dad does. I feel my brother doesn't look at it the same as me. I know what our dad did was wrong and looking at him now I think, "how pathetic." That's what his life became. @sacr3 what about time outs/ taking away toys toy/ taking t.v privileges away? there are plenty of ways to punish a child without resorting to corporal punishment. the worse thing about corporal punishment is that most parents who resort to it are never in control. they react out of anger so the beat their kid way more than they would in their right mind. so it's better not to do it at all.

It's not that hard to discipline a child without hitting. 90% of the "problems" I see between the parents and the children are the fault of the parent.
There's a huge difference when a responsible parent is disciplining they're child. But in the end it all comes down to what the parents think. I was disciplined as a child and I turned out just fine.

@broverKeyes I disagree 100% alternative punishments are not enough with kids who act like I did. If my dad threated to put me in "the corner" or "time out" over getting a cookie or something along those lies I would tough it out, and get the damn cookie. I was a very defiant kid, spanking me was the only way. All other punishments were too easy to deal with, I would just wait them out. Who is to say that there won't be anymore defiant kids like me in the years to come?

When it comes to physical punishment it can be helpful at times at getting a parents point across, "helping" the child learn their lesson. But a parent should NEVER hit their child when they are angry. Because they're anger will spill out and children will see it and harbor a deep resentment towards being punished in that way. When it comes to physical punishment it should be used wisely. A parent should only use it when they have thought over everything and are calm, not in a rage.
@julienesslove Also its important that the parent gently and calmly but firmly explains to the child that he (or she) needs to punish the child because He/She loves the child and want them to understand right from wrong. If a parent goes about punishing their children in this way, the children will have more respect for that parent then a parent who lays their hands upon a child in anger, pretty much traumatizes the child and fills them with fear and not respect toward that parent.
Yeah its good to have discipline and sometimes a bit of spanking doesnt hurt a child but actually helps them learn the lesson. But a parent should NEVER lay a hand on their child when they are in rage or in anger. Because they're anger can spill out through the punishment. I use to agree with "smacking" but now noticing the way I am, I think it is very wrong. Everyday I'd come home from school hearing my mother screaming in the basement and my sister crying. I would always go to try to stop her. I knew what she would do to me. This happened for 3 years until DCFS finally came from me calling repeatedly over and over again. My mother has recently died from alcohol poising. But for some reason, I'm sad.

I was spanked as a child, and it has never turned me into a hardened criminal. As I got older, I began to understand why they did it and believe that sometimes, I could have ended up worse off. I think parents should have the right to physical punishment under special circumstances although it's still best to avoid this.

There is no reason to smack a child over the age of 4 - they are developed enough to understand more advanced communication methods. There is no reason to smack a child under the age of 4 either, because you shouldn't have them in any situation where they would need to be smacked. If you can't come up with any better way of disciplining and communicating with your child, perhaps you shouldn't have one.

I don't see a point in using physical punishment. I mean, most likely, it's not going to make the kid stop. My parents never spanked or slapped me and I turned out fine (sort of). I never get myself into trouble outside of my home, or inside my home either.

With good dicipline without going too far, i am actually one of the best behaved students in my school (the bar is not set that high anyway) if you are going to do something stupid think for a second "what if mom or dad were here right now watching me?" just a word of advice.

I know I'm probably going to get thumbs down for this but fuck it. I look at kids today with "ADHD/ADD" and see only an undisciplined child. I have not met a mature kid at my school who hasn't been spanked. Beating you child is one thing, but spankings are perfectly effective and normal. And before you get defensive know that I was tested for adhd and confirmed positive. Now I can't join the military because of it! ADHD/ADD is a lie and it's a poor excuse for insolence/laziness/stupidity!

at age 2, my parents would twist my arm whenever i ran into the road, grabbed for knives, etc ... not because they were abusing me, but because they wanted me to associate pain with certain situations. to keep me safe.
but they didn't stop doing it until i was six, and by then i had stopped associating pain with the situation and started associating pain with /them./ they thought i was too young to understand. they love me and would not hurt me anymore, but i know how pain and fear lasts long.

There should never be physical "punishment". If indeed one must spank a child, it is for discliplinary reasons, to teach the child, never to harm or scare him. Many parents spank their children out of frustration, instead of protection. People have forgotten what it is to be a good parent. If you cant be prepared for child rearing, DONT HAVE KIDS! Striking a child anywhere but the ass is wrong. If a kid does something wrong, he/she will keep doing it until you do something. Yelling or talking won't work 90% of the time. Its a kid, they'll think "eh, he'll either talk or yell at me oh well" But if you spank your kid when you need too, "if i do that again i'll get spanked, no way". @sacr3 what about time outs/ taking away toys toy/ taking t.v privileges away? there are plenty of ways to punish a child without resorting to corporal punishment. the worse thing about corporal punishment is that most parents who resort to it are never in control. they react out of anger so the beat their kid way more than they would in their right mind. so it's better not to do it at all.

My father loved me and showed his affection, but when I got out of line he showed me. I don't think spanking will cause a child to go wrong, as long as you show affection, attention, etc to the child as well. Some people abuse spanking and don't give 2 shits about their kid - this is when its wrong.

@broverKeyes I disagree 100% alternative punishments are not enough with kids who act like I did. If my dad threated to put me in "the corner" or "time out" over getting a cookie or something along those lies I would tough it out, and get the damn cookie. I was a very defiant kid, spanking me was the only way. All other punishments were too easy to deal with, I would just wait them out. Who is to say that there won't be anymore defiant kids like me in the years to come?

When it comes to physical punishment it can be helpful at times at getting a parents point across, "helping" the child learn their lesson. But a parent should NEVER hit their child when they are angry. Because they're anger will spill out and children will see it and harbor a deep resentment towards being punished in that way. When it comes to physical punishment it should be used wisely. A parent should only use it when they have thought over everything and are calm, not in a rage.

@julienesslove Also its important that the parent gently and calmly but firmly explains to the child that he (or she) needs to punish the child because He/She loves the child and want them to understand right from wrong. If a parent goes about punishing their children in this way, the children will have more respect for that parent then a parent who lays their hands upon a child in anger, pretty much traumatizes the child and fills them with fear and not respect toward that parent.

Yeah its good to have discipline and sometimes a bit of spanking doesnt hurt a child but actually helps them learn the lesson. But a parent should NEVER lay a hand on their child when they are in rage or in anger. Because they're anger can spill out through the punishment. I use to agree with "smacking" but now noticing the way I am, I think it is very wrong. I know a lot of the time I deserved to be smacked but sometimes their anger would get the better of them and they would hit me until I was bruised. I have been hurt by my Dad before and it ruined my view of him. I use to be a Daddy's girl and now I hate my house. My mom would always get drunk, and hit me repeatedly until she passed out from exhaustion. She did this not only to me, but also my 5 year old sister. Everyday I'd come home from school hearing my mother screaming in the basement and my sister crying. I would always go to try to stop her. I knew what she would do to me. This happened for 3 years until DCFS finally came from me calling repeatedly over and over again. My mother has recently died from alcohol poising. But for some reason, I'm sad.

I was spanked as a kid, and thats was not physical abuse. But if you were to spank a kid now adays, even one spank and you could be locked up.

There is a difference between spanking or child and beating them. This was a clear visual of physical abuse.

@GruppeSechs2004 Even just spanking doesn't get the parents anywhere. Spanking or violence do *not* teach children whatever it is you are trying to teach them.
It only teaches them to fear you, distrust you, and ..of course, it teaches them violence.
Therefore, if a parent wants to change her child's behavior, the objective would be met only through making the child UNDERSTAND why the behavior is unwanted.
Violence inspired by creating plain fear in a child is mindless and pointless.

It's really disturbing looking back in my past when my Father had anger management issues (I have anger issues too because of him) and i remember he used to spank me, but i probably deserved i mean i was a spoiled brat back then.The worst part is when he used to hit my mom and i would shred into tears watching painfully.Ugh.

I was spanked as a child, and it has never turned me into a hardened criminal. As I got older, I began to understand why they did it and believe that sometimes, I could have ended up worse off. I think parents should have the right to physical punishment under special circumstances although it's still best to avoid this.

My parents spanked me when I was little, but looking back at it as adult, I probably deserved it. They are still the most loving parents in the world. I think it helped shape me into a better person. I know right from wrong and good from bad. There was no discipline with love. That's just B.S.

Hitting a child just teaches the child to obey out of fear. It even teaches the child to lie, to avoid a beating. You can discipline a child without resorting to physical violence. I agree that parenting includes teaching children right from wrong and good from bad, but it can be done without committing assault and battery. Parents who beat their children are committing a criminal act, in my opinion, and should be arrested for it.
