@galliumarsenide: it's a subtle difference; the phrasing is in groups of 2 bars, the '2' side of the clave and the '3' side. All phrasing should anticipate the '3' side by one 8th note (I discuss this more in tutorials #2 & #3).

The reason the 1st ex. is wrong is that the phrases in both bars start directly on the down beat; as a general rule (I say general because there are always variations and exceptions), the groove dies in its tracks if you start phrasing on the down beat in both bars.
