  • Hey the time Man o War ever won by 100 lenghts was against Sir Brton right? Well Sir Barton was ready for the grave when Man o War raced against him!

  • @0Lunerancea0

Winning is not everthing, it depends how fast they are going not how many wins

  • @SpiritSmoosh

Secretariat faster pace was a 25 foot stride. He takes bigger strides when running a slow pace. i couldnt even begin to guess how many feet his stride was

  • Man 'O' War! I love them both, but Man 'O' War was the ultimate racehorse, I mean come on! 28 foot stride!

  • Comment removed

  • Both of 'em are greatgreatgreat horses. But Man O'War has won more races an with normal major organs, so he's a little bit better

  • different times all gr8 horses, RIP big boys.

  • Secretariat was one of the most famous, and most spirited horses I've ever, EVER have known.

  • If Man O War had the track surface and gear of today it would be a race in deed vs Secretariat. Although Secretariat had the better stride and times on the track, off the track Man O War proved himself as a more dynamic sire with greater winning and legendary offspring. All in all it is NOT an either/or who was better? It is a blessing that we were able to witness both on and off the track through those that documented it all. Respecting the greatness of both. Amen

  • Man O War, 3 world records, won a race by over 100 lengths, 2 american records, 3 track records, not to mention he was ranked #1 in the top 100 by experts who had never seen him run!

    He is the best!

  • SECRETARIAT!!!

  • Ruffian is the best.

  • All the 7 Bloodhorse panelist had never seen Man 0' War run yet gave the nod to him. Very strange. Of all the veteran horseman who had seen both said Secretariat was best. Who would have better judgment than they or any of the 7 panelist? None if have found that has seen both said Man 0' War the best. Been said by many horseman of the turf no horse in history would have beaten Secretariat on Belmont day. Who was Hoodwink? Dont't believe he was even a 'Claimer'. I heard he was a barn pony.

  • @rscarbro100 Man 'O War was more consistent -- a monster racehorse -- but he would not have touched Secretariat's best times.

  • @whitethronebooks I agree Man 0' War was a monster of a horse my friend. Its a well known fact you cannot be consistent when your not sound or fit to run. What would Man 0' War would have been if he had an abscess at the bit in the Wood or virus/fever with diarrhea running down your legs before the Whitney or not trained for 2 wks before a long distance 1 1.2 mile racein the Woodward? I have the well documented proof from many veteran horseman.

  • that's a tough quesstion- depends on Man o' War's heart weight, that quirk of nature that gave Secretariat his mega heart. we can only dream and wonder!

  • I have loved and been fascinated with Secretariat since 1973, when I was only 16years old. I KNOW I'm NOT CRAZY..I know what I saw, what I read. But, I only brought up Secretariat's physical dilemmas to prove he was a MAGNIFICENT, Glorious creature by GOG..I am happy people love him, STILL..I ALWAYS will. Bless that BEAUTIFUL, SWEET, LOVING, ATHLETIC, GLORIOUS, BIG, RED BOY!!!XoXoXoXo BEST HORSE EVER IN MY HEART!

  • @MsRed173 Meant..by GOD..(typo)

  • @MsRed173 HE LOVED RUNNING..HE WAS INTELLIGENT and UNDERSTOOD WHAT IT WAS ABOUT!!! I LOVE HIM SO MUCH! :o)

  • @MsRed173 me too!- this is his great grandaughter-i call her Heavenly Holly or just 'punkin'

  • Mr Ed would have whipped 'em both

  • SECRETARIAT!!! # 1 LOVE HIM STILL!!!!!

  • @MsRed173, I recently, read William Nack's book on Secretariat, and I do not recall reading Secretariat, had any of those problems during his racing career.

In his book I read that Jimmy the Greek, (there are videos here on YT, Secretariat part 1 of 5, by Partymanners2), started rumors during the Kentucky Derby, that Secretariat, was lame had knee problems ankles etc..etc... which were not true.

  • @bbwalk100 3 years ago, PBS tv channel 13 had a documentary on Secretariat. The program saluted him because the Horse overcame bad ankles, bone chips, and bad knees. They said it was an encouraging story for us humans to be encouraged..to follow the same spirit of this determined Horse. Also, in 2010, Disney put out a movie "Secretariat", and in that movie(which was under consultation and fact supervision of Penny Chenery-Tweedy) they talked about Secretariat's physical trials.

  • Comment removed

  • SECRETARIAT WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!

  • Considering Secretariat had a shorter stride than Man O War, and that Secretariat had knee problems, bad ankles, and shin splints, I'd say SECRETARIAT was the better horse. Love, Love, Love Man O War..but..I give the "better horse" award to BIG BEAUTIFUL RED, SECRETARIAT..xoxo

  • @MsRed173 CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT SECRETARIAT WOULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT HIS PHYSICAL PROBLEMS? xoxoxo LOVE HIM SO!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @MsRed173, What are you talking about? Secretariat, did not have bad knees, bad ankles or shin splints.

Where did you get your information?

  • @bbwalk100 yes.....something is wrong w/this info re: Sec.....he was considerred PRISTINE, WITH EXCELLENT CONFORMATION. Per B Nack & others.

  • @MsRed173 I think it's wonderful you love Sec; I love him too! But he was the EPITOMIE of health - A SUPREME ATHLETE, with an astounding EXCEPTIONALLLY STRONG build. His physical gifts are what many/most RAVE about....not sure where that info came from? Sec was SOUND - 'he was a Fast Machine, he kept his motor clean, He was was the best D#.m.n Racehorse that we've ever seen' (sec's version of AC/DC song)

  • @nin12dogm, ITA Secretariat, did not have any physical problems with his knees ankles etc... etc... during his racing career.

I checked PBS, channel, 13 documentaries list, I could not find one on Secretariat, only Seabiscuit, he had a lot of problems with his knees.

  • its sad how all the amazing horses were along time ago we havent had a superhorse since Man O' WAR , we havnt had a triple crown winner sine 78 and in the pace were going were just getting worse horses year after year

  • @liljkm12 WRONG! Secretariat was INDEED A SUPERHORSE! Did you not see the '73 Trip Crown?

  • MN O ' WAR would no competition he was never asked to run it was like a walk in the park when ever he ran he was a super horse

  • @liljkm12 Like Sec in the '73 Belmont......

  • I read this from another poster re: Secretariat, setbacks did come to him but he was gallant even in defeat and always giving his best. Charlie Hatton, the turf writer who coined the phrase TC, also the Hall of Fame Trainer, Hollie Hughes, had actually seen the previous incarnation of equine perfection, the great Man O' War, and he said there were no comparison.

  • Continuation: These men had seen it all and they were both stunned by this chestnut colt born on 3/30/70, not only were they sure that he was the best they'd ever seen, they were sure that he was the best that anyone had seen.

  • Secretariat!!!!!!!!!!!!!! because even though he won less races dosn't mean he can't beat man o war i have a game with man o war seabisket and all the famous horses from this time

  • didnt man o war carrie more weight than any other horse when he was racing at that time i think it was 138 lbs

  • I heard Sercretariat's stride was 25 to 26 feet (I have the Nova documentary - I'll have to watch it again to be sure. He had 2 gears one was his sprint gear where he ran like a quarter horse (shorter but faster stride) the other was his cruising gear. I'm going to have to watch that Nova documentary again. I didn't know Man O' War still held those records? Do you know what those records are? What Track & at what distance? Thats pretty amazing! Secreatariat did have more competition. I love BOTH

  • @EquineDreams, From Penny Chenery, we measured Secretariat's stride on a freshly harrowed track at 25, feet. I never accepted that because he was accelerating at the point of measurement ant not yet at full stride. Native Dancer, was measured at 29, feet and I'm sure Secretariat, had a similar range but I have no proof.

  • @EquineDreams It's apparent Man O War was extraordinary - he is rated # 1 by bloodhorse & Sec is # 2. IMHO, they both were the greatest - I SAW Sec on TV in '73 and knew I had seen history. I never saw MOW race, but he obviously was adored by his fans (just like Sec) during his career. It's really touching that W Harbut remained w/MOW until the end, and MOW passed away not long after Will passed. Noble! I ADORE Secretariat - SO TALENTED, just a NATURAL! But not arrogant, always gracious & kind.

  • SECRETARIAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he is the king! all i can say to him in heaven is, fly around those cloud tracks big boy! spread your wings and fly! BEAT THE BEST ONES UP THERE RED!

  • Comment removed

  • @sparky681000 Ruffian would dominate his ass ! and phar lap and man o war!

  • Native Dancer....the forgotten Champion 22: 21-1-0...."He may have been the greatest horse of all time. He'd have given any horse in history a race and probably have beaten them all -Man o' War, Secretariat, and the rest- just as long as no one actually told him to do it, just as long as they'd let him do it his way."

  • A biomechanics expert measured Secretariat's stride at 25' and noted that he had a short and a long stride. The 25 ft. stride, he noted, was Secretariat's shorter stride. I think Secretariat's the greatest race horse in the history of the sport. Will another come along and wow us? I think maybe so. When you consider what may come from Zenyatta & Bernardini, especially with Bernardini's pedigree, a magical colt or filly is possible.

  • @blackcloudipoy Many people considered Native Dancer to be the greatest horse in American racing history, rivaling even the superiority of the legendary Man o' War, later pointing out that even Secretariat didn't match the enormous length of Man o' War's stride, but Native Dancer had equaled the twenty-eight foot span. I don't think Bernardini or Zenyatta hold a candle to those 3, I would love to see ND, MOW and Sec run

  • Regardless of which one would win, the race would be amazing to watch.

  • I would love to know who would be faster. But remember, Man O' War never raced at full speed...

  • I like them both but I prefer Secritariat ;)

  • Here me out please everyone says that secritariat is the best becuas he won by 31 lengths at the triple crown. So it doesn't mean anything Man o war raced 72 times and lost once!!!!! Secriatariate raced about 12 times and lost 4 or something like that imagine how many he would have lost if he raced 72 times just think about that before u say that Secriatriate is the best

  • @trosselit Man O War raced 21: 20 - 1 - 0, he won the 1 5/8 Lawrence Realization stakes by over 100 lengths in a world record time over a horse named Hoodwink who was owned by Sam Riddle's niece because no one would race MOW. Sec raced 21: 16 - 3- 1 (out of the money once), he won the 1 1/2 mile Belmont by 31 lengths. MOW won the Belmont by 20 lengths and was never asked to run....

  • @denabluechicken Sec's Belmont - in which he set THE TRACK RECORD which still stands - was a HAND RIDE. Ronnie was smart enough to realize what an intelligent horse Sec was, and let the Horse make many of his own racing decions........Sec CHOSE to run Belmont's 1.5 miles in 2.24. SEC's TRACK RECORD stands to this day. @ trosselit - WHAT THE HECK???? Trosselit, Sec had 21 starts - just like MOW.

  • @nin12dog and MOW won a shorter version of the race under pull by 20 lengths....they are both amazing, and there will always be people in the Sec camp and people in the MOW camp, there is no right answer. FACT: MOW wore IRON shoes and SEC wore much lighter aluminium shoes and neither were hard ridden in most of their races. I agree the 1973 Belmont was an AMAZING race but I still like MOW better you won't change my mind so don't be rude.

  • @denabluechicken no rudeness intended......I am confident MOW was an extraordinary horse, and I am aware he is ranked # 1 by bloodhorse. IMHO, both Sec & MOW are # 1. I was simply explaining Sec's Belmont. Pardon me.

  • @nin12dog, In William Nack's, book there was some controvery in MWO, being voted #1, by Bloodhorse. They were both extraordinary horses but I give the edge to Secretariat. He was very intelligent for a horse. As per Penny Chenery, Sec., started dictating his own racing career as a 3 yr. old he started to understand racing. He made moves on the racetrack that no other horse has every done before i.e. The Preakness

  • @bbwalk100 I SO AGREE! I LOVED Sec's Preakness - what an amazing move @ the 1st curve!!! What a Racehorse! P Chenery considered his Preakness remarkable, and said it was Sec's decision entirely - I love to watch his Preakness....Belmont was Dramatic & Extraordinary, but his move in the Preakness was very risky - Sec took a chance accelerating on the 1st curve ('Suicide move', per A Beyer) & Sec pulled through like the Champion that he was. What a thrill it would be to see Sec & MOW race!

  • @nin12dog I am well versed as are you, I agree it was a fantastic race (although not as exciting as Zenyatta in the breeders cup classin in 09). :) I just get annoyed people forget all about Native Dancer in the talk of champions

  • @denabluechicken And I've noticed many consider Native Dancer to be an EXTREMELY important & influential ?Stud?? (can't think of better term?). NDancer's 'children' are very talented/winners; ND was a great influence in breeding. I think Sec stands out for me because - well, he was Astounding - and I actually saw his Trip Crwn on TV in '73. I cried when I watched him @ Belmont! I suspect people reacted the same way to MOW. I'm less familiar w/NDancer. But know he is influencial & respected.

  • @denabluechicken When all is said & done, there are SO MANY amazing & beloved Racehorses. They're BEAUTIFUL, smart, they have grace & HEART! It's no wonder people fall in love with certain Champions & feel so strongly! I'm not so familiar w/Zenyatta, but know she has a HUGE group of fans who love her! And Zenyatta is strikingly beautiful - just drop-dead gorgeous! She'd be a Supermodel, if she were Human.

  • @nin12dog ha yes, shes long and lean and tall for sure :) ND was a great stud but also an amazing racehorse however he's the reason for all of the broken legs since most of the horses are inbred back to him 2, 3 or 4 times sad really. PS I wasn't born yet in 1973 so I can't go by what i saw only by what I read which could be why i love MOW (also my appy i had as a kid had MOW blood)

  • @denabluechicken An Apaloosa (sp?) w/MOW! I bet your horse was fantastic! Yeah, I really don't care for live horse racing now.....I am apalled by races when horses destroy themselves at the tracks - it's hideous! Beautiful Barbaro - I thought I was watching the next Secretariat :) when I saw Barbaro in the Derby! It's so inhumane. I think it was great that MOW's owner NEVER sold him, and his groom stayed with him til the end. MOW had such dignity - like he knew he'd win any race he entered.

  • @nin12dog Yes she was fantastic, her lines go back to a quarter horse named Lum Bay Go by Go Man Go (her name was Go Red Go) and Go Man Go's sire had MOW and Sir Gallahad, obviously VERY diluted bloodline but it's still neat to know I had a small piece of MOW with me for years :) (she was a fabulous barrel racing champ)

  • @denabluechicken I can tell you loved her! Were you her rider when she raced? What did she look like? Was she spotted (LOL? I don't know if this is the right term for the speckles on Apoloosas?) I suppose she had a red 'base coat' - Go Red Go?.....Wow, I really don't know the right way to describe an Apoloosa....That's great; she was talented, just like her ancestors!

  • @denabluechicken i don't get the 'diluted bloodline' part of your comment; this paint filly i call Heavenly Holly is a great grandaughter of Big Red and i see some of his qualities, right down to her 'fire' and temper and the way she rears. be proud of your mare! i am!! such a miracle!

  • @trosselit you do not have correct information.

  • I don't know why people would dislike this? This was really good, and great information!

Right now I'm going to be working on an animation of Man O' War vs Secretariat. So this is helpful! thanks for the video!
