  • Ya the Phil Ochs version is amazing.

To bad the FBI killed him.

Just like like Judge Ritchie and Governor Spry killed Joe Hill.

Check out Joan Baez: "I dreamed I saw Joe hill last night" then Billy Bragg: "I dreamed I saw Phil Ochs last night"

  • eh, after listening to this song to the end, it won me over. i think it was when he mentioned "alberto gonzales". i guess some people are actually paying attention to shit after all.

  • Love you Phil - this day and every day. If Eddie's work here gets just one person to check out your work, my beautiful friend, then there is no down side.

  • lets all hope this song will not be revised again : ) \/

  • Why is Eddie Vedder doing covers of folk singers, when he can't wrap his lips around even decent pronunciation? Doesn't anyone ever tell him they can't discern half of the words he says, because he strings them together in some sort of lazy fake Irish mouth mud? I just don't understand why he sings them if he doesn't give a shit to make sure the words are heard.

  • @drummerlinn

Hey, I don't like his stying particularly either. Too damn slow for one thing, but it I'm for anything that promotes Phil Ochs awareness. Oh, and I understood every syllable so I'd suggest you get your ears checked out. Might just be full of wax or hate, but you never know, could be serious.

  • @KjelRayMJP I'm sure I'd be able to understand him better if I listened to him more, and others like him. Just like how some have no problem understanding every word from an MC, or the words in the screams of a metal vocalist, because that's what they listen to. There is in fact another way to understand singers who slurs words and puke them out of their mouth - knowing the exact lyric. My only point was that he didn't pronounce them in a way people besides yourself can understand.

  • @drummerlinn You talk way too much and FYI no one gives a shit about your opinions

  • @KjelRayMJP ...and how that is a slap in the face of phil Ochs fans that haven't grown an ear for eddie's word waterfall. In a way, it's subjective. Accents happen, bodies adapt, people are better all around with what they're used to.

You deciding to negatively judge the kind of person I am is far more hateful than me voicing how offended I am at his singing diction.

  • @drummerlinn Take it easy friend. I didn't mean to offend. Any fan of Phil's is my brother. I was just chiding a little. Actually I'm not a fan of Pearl Jam and I didn't know this guy was from Pearl Jam, but I don't think his rendition of the song was a slap in face of Ochs fans. I think he was honestly trying to honor Phil's memory and message. Now Tim Robbins on the other hand shouldn't get anywhere near a microphone and sing, especially anything of Phil's.

  • @drummerlinn GFY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @drummerlinn Yeah you should just clean the shit out of your ears and stop complaining about a guy who's had a successful career with his baritone like voice as well as being an advocate for the people ,why do you think he did this song in the 1st place, ergo S T F up (Eddie the Vedderman you can't find a better band)

  • I love Pearl Jam but fuck "vote for change" yeah change from really bad to really fucking bad

  • Love this song...

  • powerful stuff,

Here's to the land you torn out the heart of

  • is it just me, or is Vevo lowering the resolution of the videos?

  • written by who?

  • Wasnt it Rehnquist's court? Not John Roberts? Did he change that bc it fits better? Phil Ochs would never do that.

  • John Roberts took office in 2005 after Rehnquists death.

  • Yes exactly, so it was Rehquists court who, when they elected this president, "started this war." I assume he is referring to the Gore recount decision made by the Supreme Court. Roberts was in there well after that...

  • Now this shit would fill Phils heart and mind with pride, had he still been around to hear it

  • interesting song kudos

  • I sort of lost interest in Pearl Jam shortly after the second album until tonight when I caught Eddie Vedder performing Phil Ochs on vh1. I was amazed to see that. Ochs is one of my biggest heroes. he's all but forgotten to our generation with his tragic downfall from Chicago 68 to having his vocal chords slit in the early 70s leading depression and suicide in 1976, he fell off the map and with the second half of his albums now out of print, you have to seek most of his recordings from vinyl.

  • I am thrilled to see bands like pearl jam keeping Ochs' legacy alive. I hope this will encourage people to seek out more from Ochs.

  • Dude.... I just heard the Ochs version.... the first time I ever heard him. It makes me think Bob who? (Dylan) Jesus, his voice is one of the best I've EVER heard and his charged songs... so much passion I'm in utter disbelief.

  • @Mertdizzle15 hes like bob dylan but with a good voice.

  • @Mertdizzle15 No Ochs does not sound like Bob Dylan whatsoever. A white person with an acoustic guitar singing political folk does not mean he is like Bob Dylan.

  • @tommyisirish God, I did say that. I don't know what I was thinking.

  • @Mertdizzle15 Ochs-a really great social activist-he committed suicide in '76-major bummer -look up his other stuff-just as good :D

  • @Mertdizzle15 I just found out about Phil Ochs. He is AMAZING!!!

  • It's great to see Phil Ochs so well remembered. Thanks for posting this comment!

  • whatever happened to that "generation"? Scratch a New Left babyboomer and you get a Reaganite yuppie!

  • eu sou pica

  • i wish pearl jam would put this song on album

if it is can some one tell me which one it on

  • It's on the "Into the Wild" soundtrack.

  • I checked and I still cannot find it.

  • No it's not..

  • no it's not. know your shit.

  • Great Eddie. Still with you after the years. I'm 33. So inspirational. Thanks

  • "...But if you'll look at my left hand."

  • Real power.

I saw Pearl Jam at Bonnaroo and Eddie claims you can't change the world with a song, but sometimes I don't know...
