  • POL...it could have been xbox live/playstation network before either of those kicked off. SE, why do you make stupid decisions?

  • Balamb town from FFVIII, Esthar mountain caves from same game, and some FMW´s from FFIX :P This was released with FFIX, so before any footage of FFXI.

  • lol. wow....

  • LOL

  • Not now man *conflicted gaze*

    Ellie needs me.

  • How old was this...

  • This looks... futuristic!

  • Say what you will, but all of you wish you could be as badass as MOTHERFUCKING TURO!

  • WTF did that just say gas station????? lmao and what the hell are their characters wearing? ths isn't ffxi...

  • WOW XD

I wish that was POL instead of the one we got..

    >_>; Music is so annoying on the real one.

  • lol

  • worst.... promo..... EVAH!

  • I played ffxi and this is not like it at all.. This is so wierd.. looks like the older final fantasy titles. I guess they've been planning on ffxi for a loooong time.

  • Anyone notice that the first in-game scene were they run by a gas station looks exactly like a screen from FFVIII in that first port place.

  • Yeah, it really does.

  • @Kyoj1n I just played ff8 again recently, yes that is the 2nd town you visit.

  • LAMO wth is that it doesnt look remotely like the FFXI I been playing the last.....on second thought I'll not mention how Ive spent a fifth of my life on one game XD

  • Elie is such a whore.

  • Omg , that girl used way too many smiley faces!

  • smells like "Stay Alive" the movie

  • I think SE just gave up on it at some point shortly after the US release of FFXI.

Maybe because nobody (well, almost nobody) utilized much anything of what was already implemented, and just clicked on through to FFXI.

To me, at least, Steam is much like what SE (well, Square anyways) had in mind when they made POL.

  • way to rip off a comment you just saw :/

  • man, if only SE weren't so retarded.

  • A lot of the architecture was there on the FFXI side. In the old days they had a temp log function that was similar to what they show in the video. You used to be able to send people knocks as well. The messaging is in there to some degree as well. I think they probably hit a wall with how to implement the other stuff like the music, guides and manga onto the ps2 though and we ended up with the POL we have now.

  • SE REALLY dropped the ball on this one. Sure, play online is ok the way it is, but if this is all the possibilities it COULD have had, SE missed the mark BIGTIME.

  • That god it *didn't* turn out this way.

FFXI and POL turned out just fine for the most part.

  • you are one dumb idiot

  • Haha...I don't ever remember seeing this but I got a few LOLs out of it.

  • This shit is so lame..christ.

  • I remember seeing this. It was only on Square Japanese site. Way back in 2000. Around PS2 release possibly before. Never appeared on Square's US site.

  • haha

  • THE HELLLLLLLL?

Why didn't it turn out like this? it would have been really fun!! oh well lol

  • It did turn out like that. Just not so dreamy artificial-TV-world-ish.

  • it was going to be FF9 online? XD

  • I think this video was to show what PlayOnline might've become like way before it was released, not what the final product was. That's why you see Balamb garden and FF8/9 scenes. They probably used those vids just for examples of online gameplay.

lol at the video though. it's a shame playonline isn't more than what it is

  • I am TRIPPING BALLS

  • Also has the Iifa tree from FFIX in it. lol.

  • lol

  • i remember watching this video waiting for xi to come out!

  • Too many ambitions? Final Fantasy XI and POL turned out way better than this movie would of lead us to believe. All this movie is is a reskin of Final Fantasy VIII.

  • Lol, if only it was like this. So much different. I guess they had to many ambitions?

  • Wow. They walked in Balamb!

And you could actually read manga?

    That's crazy.

  • I can accept that PlayOnline never really turned into anything other than a way of launching FINAL FANTASY XI Online and Tetra Master, but I find it weird how in this video, when the two people meet up (at 1:24) they're at the train station in Balamb, and they leave from the entrance to Balamb, too. (The one that leads to a road going to Balamb Garden.) in FINAL FANTASY VIII.
