I think SE just gave up on it at some point shortly after the US release of FFXI.

Maybe because nobody (well, almost nobody) utilized much anything of what was already implemented, and just clicked on through to FFXI.

To me, at least, Steam is much like what SE (well, Square anyways) had in mind when they made POL.

A lot of the architecture was there on the FFXI side. In the old days they had a temp log function that was similar to what they show in the video. You used to be able to send people knocks as well. The messaging is in there to some degree as well. I think they probably hit a wall with how to implement the other stuff like the music, guides and manga onto the ps2 though and we ended up with the POL we have now.

I think this video was to show what PlayOnline might've become like way before it was released, not what the final product was. That's why you see Balamb garden and FF8/9 scenes. They probably used those vids just for examples of online gameplay.

I can accept that PlayOnline never really turned into anything other than a way of launching FINAL FANTASY XI Online and Tetra Master, but I find it weird how in this video, when the two people meet up (at 1:24) they're at the train station in Balamb, and they leave from the entrance to Balamb, too. (The one that leads to a road going to Balamb Garden.) in FINAL FANTASY VIII.
