LOL call them whatever you want but they are gay men in dresses! It's just an easier way to accept homosexuality. Same in Iran you can only be gay if you have a sex change. Sad but it's the truth
i remember this used to be a regular feature in lahore weddings and births as well. the last i saw was at my nani's house in 1988. its changed now though and may be the activity exists in smaller towns but not in lahore at least. quite sad actually, since the hejra dances were my first encounter with them and one learns about the variety in this world and how to respect it. Thank you for the post, took me down memory lane:)
ohh my god!! we went to my auntz wedding in india and these ppl came for like 2 days!! it was so funny watching them dance. they sucked tho. and they were pretty mean..
i think they pay the postman to know when the weddings happen..each district has an order as to which band of hidras goes where..to ease turf battles..it is very interesting.
puès si...es costumbre q los hijra bailen a bodas o ceremonias por el nacimiento de ninos..pqè llevan buena suerte y fertilidad...aunque son muy discriminados....es un aspecto social muy interesante...
money is a part of it for sure...they do enjoy performing too. they gave me some kind of lucky charm that i will open with them when i have my first baby... i did not open it yet. :)
these hijras are an interesting bunch. on my trips to india, i found them to be quite entertaining but they can create quite a scene also. at least they have found a way to make money especially in the society they live in.
my husband said the hedras are outside i did not know what to expect..it was a, wild experience.the one in the red was entertaining and funny.i thought it was funny to see her push the limits with her dancing(like that touch at the end)she made my inlaws blush!
when it came time for them to get paid. they wanted more money than was the normal fee and they started taking off their clothes in hopes that we would pay them to keep their clothes on!to bad i did not get that on film...
what an awesome description in the description box :) really made sense

Damn, nobody would dance with her. I felt sorry for her. I wonder if she cursed them at the end.

it's nice of them to have them at the wedding, what should they run and hide in caves? the world has a place for them...they're good musicians too!!
