  • @baalhaophanim What and whom do you mean?

  • Beautiful and sensitive singing and also lovely flute playing. This is melodious in the extreme and, listening again more than a year on from the first time I heard it here on YT, I am still struck by the overarching musicality of the offering. Sweet winds of love waft the listener into the port of harmony. Thank you so much :)

  • He is the true phenomenon of the 21th century opera system. A modern Farinelli, the legendary voice. I hope he'll perform in Milan soon. Probably the best young tenor of the 21th century ... is a countertenor. Wow !

  • Wow great moment, very precious, very. Thank you for this moment special.

  • It'a a real pleasure hearing a man giving a new life to the castrati singing style.

  • @lolita7961 Lolita, I agree with you "Very good! Every note is lived through, and in general, divine music!!!!!!!!!!" I think that Vivaldi and Nicholas Spanos is a perfect match, though I think like that also about his e.g. Handel, Mozart, Hahn, Manos Hatzidakis... Ah, I wish you could hear his Vedro' con mio diletto at his recital. His "vedro" in the 3d part of this great aria was so long and beautiful that I thought I was having a glimpse of castrati singing. The impression will stay forever!

  • Truly amazing!

  • Wonderful singer! Thank you!!!

  • Wonderful singer!!! Thank you!

  • A touch of Eternity.

The other side of emotion and yet everything of emotion.

    Consummate.

    A blessing to hear.

  • Dear plavos, Thank you for all of the wonderful Spanos videos. I don't remember to thank you often enough.

  • @fourmi1060 We do owe serenaluce a great deal for all of her efforts to make Nikos's music known to as many people as possible. His voice is so special and we're all so lucky to know of him and to be able to listen to his elegant and exquisite voice.

  • Hi, What a truly wonderful & magnificent video, this is absolutely glorious. Thank you so much for posting & serenaluce for sharing.

  • Beautiful. Thanks a lot to serenaluce for sending this.

  • @fourmi1060 Oops, typing mistake. "Life is worth living..." Well, I think that life is worth living in any case:-). But what would be our life without such ART, such BEAUTY?! Vita brevis, ars longa!:-)

  • @fourmi1060 Dear friend fourmi:-)Wow, thank you:-)I'm blushing:-) But without unparalleled Nicholas Spanos any of my efforts would be in vain:-) So, long live Nicholas's great art and good luck to him! Zitw Nikos Spanos kai kali tihi! Efharistw poly! We want more:-). And also, without Plavos we all couldn't meet today here and enjoy again this heavenly sublime beauty! Well, people often write too much about life worse living in artists' videos but as long as SUCH beauty exists it definitely is:)

  • Exhilarating once again!!! Thanks serenaluce for sending me the link today.

  • Exactly 2 years ago this day (29th) I heard for the first time Nicholas Spanos's voice in this aria Sol da te and couldn't forget this voice anymore! Thanks Plavos for sharing it with me and letting me discover this stunning artist to whom I'll always be grateful for bringing such BEAUTY into my life! Though the orchestra here is not perfect, but the interpretation is the BEST,PUREST! I heard it at his recital in a piano version which is another gem because of Zafranas's wonderful play!Thank you

  • @serenaluce We've been friends for over a year now, and I couldn't be more delighted. i'm so happy that we've been ablet to Share Nicholas Spanos's voice and to listen to all of his beautiful music together. I'm so lucky to have had you tell me about Spanos and start me listening to him. thank you so much!

  • @arpeggio1358 Dear friend arpeggio:-)I'm so happy that we met on YT and now friends:-) Well, I'm blushing again:-). I can't accept all these compliments. fourmi's comments are so elegant and show real class. I as an emotional woman can't express my thoughts in such a great manner, but I fully agree with him!:-) Also, first of all we have to THANK PLAVOS for creating this channel and letting people discover this unique artist. He had the best "product" possible and I only took it for my channel:)

  • sorry P.J is better than u....

  • @leetha109 Everything is relative in the world...and,sorry, your fleeting opinion too.

  • @spqrmor Well, I agree, everything is relative... It can really be a fleeting opinion and eventially the person can be disappointed in his empty idol and change his opinion, or never as he or she prefers POP to serious art. What are you gonna do if the majority of all people in the world are primitive and shallow, and the more primitive and shallow art is the more they enjoy it? We can't change this world, unfortunately. It's MASS production oriented on the MARKET. Not everybody understands it.

  • I have the feeling that the flutist is struggling with his (truly challenging) part, and this influences the choice of the tempo and its interpretation.

Spanos delivers a nice and tasteful rendition, but not so top-star as other comments say. I'm not really moved too much. And it seems to me that some highest notes are a bit strained and the lowest a bit too shallow. It remains pleasant to hear though.

  • Awesome. The best interpretation of this great aria ever.

  • @tamerlano236

This obe is great, but I persobally prefer it with Philippe Jarusski

  • @tamerlano236

This obe is great, but I persobally prefer it with Philippe Jarusski. He drives more passion in his singing.

  • @orlandofurioso2007 Ah, vy iz Rossii. Ya tol'ko chto proverila vash kanal. Ya mogla by vam otvetit' na russkom:-). Ponyatno, chto vy ne mne otvechali, no ya sluchaino uvidela i ne uderzhalas':-). Znaete, PJ - prosto fal'tsettist, u kotorogo est' tol'ko verknii i nemnogo crednego registra. Etogo ne dostatochno, chto by nastoyashim kontrtenorom. Dlya etogo nado imet' vse 3 registra, vklyuchaya NIZHNII! Vot Spanos - nastoyashii kontrtenor! Sravnite ego Sol s drugimi nastoyashimi - Cencic i Bowman.

  • @orlandofurioso2007 Ah we disagree, but that's fine. Not all people can like the same singer. To me, Jaroussky comes across without emotion and passion. i see him as essentially a pop singer who sings opera arias, whereas Spanos is to me, the real deal with the voice, technique, and training of an opera singer.

  • @tamerlano236 Jaroussky like a pop singer? Just because he's popular among certain baroque passionates? It's like you would call Horowitz or Benedetti Michelangeli pop musicians. Jaroussky has his solo recitals just like pianists have their solo recitals and Jaroussky performs operas like pianists participate in concert performances.

  • @cioccolateria I guess we will just have to disagree. I'm just not fond or Jaroussky's style or voice. To my ear, his style sounds very pop. But then opinions differ and the way people hear music differs. And that's all right. There's plenty of room for all opinions on YT.

  • @cioccolateria Excuse my butting into your discussion but Jaroussky is a real POP SINGER not because he is popular among certain baroque passionates who are just brainwashed by promotion which nowadays can make an "opera singer" of any pop singer who only has a special talent to sell themselves for the market but because of the cheap pop style in which he sings! If you had ears you would hear that he sings without any DEPTH, superficially. It's pure POP!He just should be compared with POPsingers

  • @serenaluce I wholeheartedly agree

  • @cioccolateria... falsettists like Vitas, Artem Semenov but not real countertenors like Cencic, Gall, Spanos, Bowman singing this aria. We can argue whose interpretation and timber is better but they are from the SAME vocal category! If to make more money nowadays they infiltrate pop singers into opera productions still doesn't make Bocelli or Baskov opera tenors, Brightman or Jenkins classical sopranos, etc. PJ even doesn't have a lower register! It'd be absurd to compare Horowitz with Mauriat!

  • @fourmi1060 Mine too:-) I agree, such a nice comment!:-)

  • Great performance! He moves my heart ^_^

  • So beautiful. His voice is really caressing the ears.

  • @TheJlazar What a marvelous comment! 5 stars!:-)

  • simplement beau... pure merveille...

  • This video is always so beautiful. It's one to return to over and over again.

  • Marvellous video!!!

    GREAT NICHOLAS!!!

  • How did I miss this gem?!? Wonderful!

  • @fourmi1060

  • Thank you for this lovely performance

I too await the arrival of Nicholas Spanos on the big stage of Covent Garden and the Met. Soon?

  • He cast a spell on all his fans,

With voice of charm and brilliance,

Which tells about baroque and style,

Which gives a source to live and smile,

To touch the dust of old epoch,

To feel an exquisite of vogue.

    He is philosopher of Art,

He talks to us with open heart,

    He always follows music path,

He's genius who lives with us.

  • @spqrmor Wow! Wonderful poem! You expressed I guess all Spanos's fans' feelings in such a lovely way!:-) Couldn't agree more with you!

  • @serenaluce The poem is beautiful...and fitting for the one yerar anniversary.

  • @arpeggio1358 I guess so:-)

  • @serenaluce It definitely is!

  • @arpeggio1358 Thank you very much. This modest piece is devoted to all his true fans as well.

  • @spqrmor You're very welcome.

  • @spqrmor Beautiful poem! Thank you for sharing it with us!

Marie K

  • Bravo bravo! Merci AV

  • Spanos voice is devine, sublime but the metal flute doesn´t help. A wood flute would change the atmosphere here very much.

  • Perhaps the flutist in Gall's version is the best, but his voice sounds old and awful. Only Jaroussky's version is worse than his. Spanos's voice is the most beautiful with his most original coloratura, the best interpretation, but in Cencic's version the whole orchestra sounds better to me - legato. So, in general perception I distinguish these two versions, but still think that the main thing is the voice and not the flutist and the orchestra, which, of course, somehow change the atmosphere.

  • You mentioned 21st century audience. So, there are no castrati anymore and the only logical substitution is countertenors. Don't you see yourself how ridiculous it sounds when one woman, dressed as a man, sings this love aria to another woman! Gall looks and sounds absurd to me, very unpleasant timbre! Barocco is expressive, emotional singing to move the heart. Do you find any trace of emotion, soul in PJ's interpretation? His voice is empty, flat with awful coloratura! Is it true barocco to you?

  • Comment removed

  • You love PJ, I DON'T! So, good for you: go on loving him, dreaming, fantacizing about his... "great art", of course!:-) What's your problem? You ran out of space writing this nonsense on his videos?! Yeah, his voice is so "clear and light" that it just evaporates before reaching true art's final destination - TO MOVE THE HEART!:-) You say it yourself THAT IS VERY SUBJECTIVE, so what insult is it for you if I find PJ's voice empty of emotions?! He calls himself "an artist". It's a public figure.

  • PJ just pretends that he is sincere, but he doesn't share any emotions. There should be more in singing than just voice, producing sweet lovely sounds and showing agility! By the way, in those pieces he struggled and it seemed to me in the end was out of breath. Anyway, I'm not just a consumer of sweet sounds! I want to feel afterglow listening to true artists like Spanos, and not this emptiness after PJ's singing! "To keep faithful to the original version" means to share HIS SOUL with people

  • Thank you for your kind permission to go with peace with my intollerance towards fake artists like PJ!:-) You can go with peace with your obsession with PJ too! Why don't you take your own advice and learn how to listen, "to go beneath the surface"?! Perhaps you would hear then how false all his singing is! But if it's what resonates with your soul, you show what YOU are. Concerning respecting the others, we share opinions. YOU pushed the "reply" button and received MY answer. Problem again?!

  • I'm sorry if my replies were rude. Excuse me.

I see you are very passionate, i like it. And you have also good arguments but please, don't forget to be kind ; -)

    Best regards

  • Sorry, if MY replies to you were rude. You are right, I'm very passionate concerning what I consider to be TRUE ART and intolerant towards the artists I consider fake! And I also have a biting sense of humour:-) But I think that we just shared opinions in a bit heated, but still civilized discussion. It's OK, I guess. Anyway, I'll also try not to forget to be kind:-)

    Best regards to you too!

  • By the way, this video is not about PJ. You said that you liked Spanos's version despite the orchestra. Why did you delete it?:-) Actually, in my opinion it's the best interpretation really despite the orchestra! And not only the most beautiful but the most intelligent coloratura of all the versions I've heard! I can only imagine how fantastic it would sound with one of the best orchestras!..Then Cencic's and Bowman's versions of this great aria, one of the most beautiful ones ever written...

  • Comment removed

  • Despite of the orchestra of course ;)

  • PJ puts himself in the limelight by making huge money on his recordings. He is very promoted as you know. So he is supposed to be judged by listeners as a PERFORMER! I never insulted him personally! But it's my right to criticize his interpretations and coloratura! Don't you think? OK, I wasted my time listening to his Pianti and Fra le procelle. You just mention his "vocal agility". And what about his SOUL?! Jumping, waving his long arms, making big eyes and touching faces isn't sharing soul!

  • @serenaluce

I agree that it is very awkward to watch a woman in a trouser role singing a love aria to another woman... especially when the "man" still looks very feminine. :S But you say, " The only logical substitution is countertenors." No... the only logical substitution is GOOD countertenors! (Like Spanos. :D)

  • @HM0880 This version is really a pure, beautiful, sublime love aria in his interpetation! No pretended, false and forced emotions. Spanos's voice has such a magic that the more you listen to it the more you like it. Actually, many of his fans say so... I agree, the only logical substition is GOOD countertenors to women in pants roles! Not "angels", sexless creatures. Countertenors is a very special category where if a man wants to sound high and manly he WILL! Spanos proves it! He is THE BEST!!!

  • @serenaluce

It's too bad that this blockbuster love aria is the result of a sorceress's spell. :(

  • @HM0880 Doesn't matter. The emotions are true! :-) Are we gonna discuss now what LOVE is, if it's always the right one, not mistaken one, and how to describe it fom the philosophical point of view? LOL Also what to do not to fall in love with the wrong person? Do you know any recipe how always to choose with whom to fall in love? LOL

  • @serenaluce

I think that love may be too heady and complicated a topic for YouTube comments. :D Still... what do you think? :)

  • @HM0880 Oh, you caught off guard:-) Actually I'm ready to discuss what I think about it:-) I agree with you that it's a too complicated topic for YT comments! LOL

  • @serenaluce

    Yes... most definitely!

  • Two best versions of this wonderful aria are Spanos's and Cencic's. Very different and both are just great! Spanos's is more lyric and tender with an angelic timbre, unique colour, spell bindingly beautiful! Most original embellishment!!!

  • This is just sublime. His voice is beautiful and his technique is superb. I wish I'd seen the production.

  • Very, very good! Beautiful voice! Very beautiful, enchanting aria! One of my favourite Barocco arias. Interesting interpretation!

  • @serenaluce

Spanos has such a warm, lovely timbre. So many countertenors sound unnatural and forced singing in the higher ranges-- but not Spanos! Thank you, serenaluce, for sending this to me, and thank you, plavos, for posting. :)

  • @HM0880 Thank you too for such a nice exchange of opinions:-) You are absolutely right about many other countertenors. But Spanos is unique! ONE AND ONLY! Actually, I first heard his voice on this channel exactly a year ago and it took my breath away, which made me listen to all his pieces posted on YT! A year later I'm even more convinced that his interpretation of Sol da te is the best one in spite of not such a good orchestra! The most lyric and beautiful voice, the most exquiste coloratura!

  • @serenaluce

Spanos really *is* wonderful. I hope he will tour North America someday; it would be especially enjoyable to see him in a staged opera (with decent staging/costumes/direction! So many of the new productions are simply bizarre... :D).

  • @HM0880 I hope so too! And all his North American branch of Spanos fan club wants to see him on stage as soon as possible! I know such people in mainly United States but in Canada too! We all are looking forward to his North America tour! But many people in Europe are looking forward to his European tour too!:-)

  • @serenaluce

I'd like to see him as Cherubino!

  • @HM0880 You can listen to his Cherubino on this channel "Voi che sapete". Again i't's the best version I've ever heard though I also like Cencic's version very much! Ryabets's one is very good too. But no comparison with Spanos! Of course, you can make your own opinion:-)

  • @serenaluce

Listening to his "Voi che sapete" right now! It's great, but one of the things that I love about opera is the visual aspect, and this recording is only audio. :( But it's better than nothing. :D
