shannon is my all time favorite. :) and thumbs up for her awesome permed bangs lol i was rocking bangs just like that around this same time :) gotta love the early 90's :)
a CLASSIC routine!! I remember being shocked when finally changed her floor music [I think it was in '95? That was the first time I saw her new routine anyway....] I always appreciate the attention to detail in the choreo of this routine!
You just don't get routines like this anymore. though the difficulty isn't as high as what you see nowadays the elegance throughout the whole routine is beautiful. The artistry is barely visable in gymnastics these days as the routines need to be packed with difficulty to be in with a chance of medalling. I miss these routines.
ok i have read some of the comments on this page and ALL YOU HATERS OUT THERE!!!!!! GET OVER IT this happened 18 years ago so please don't keep arguing with people from different sides of the country about who should of won because frankly it doesn't matter who's right or wrong! What are they going to do? Find her and take her medal away? No! So please will everyone stop arguing about it?
This is what I call REAL CLASSIC GYMNASTICS COREOGRAPHY !!! May she lacks of difficulty, but Boy...Her dance moves are simply AWESOME!!! I guess she was the last to have this kind of ballet-coreography routines. Todays Floor Excercises are just jumps, leaps and tumbling passes. No elegance at all. Not even Lavinia ( I'm a true fan of her), Henrietta or Tatiana had this kind of trademark. Bravo Shannon!!!
@ludan68 I agree with you! Shannon Miller has a placement, for every finger flick, hand movement...there is never one dull moment any of her routines...her dance is so graceful! I think the reason we don't see so much dance anymore is the code of points requires so many leaps and jumps, and tumbling passes to get the high difficulty score they need...if the code of points eased up some we probably would see more dance! But Shannon is truely a GREAT Gymnast! :)
@TikiBoy382 I agree as well. Although by today's standards, none of those tumbling lines would be considered stuck landings with the lunges at the end.
Indeed she had difficulty, but compared to Chousovitina,Milosovici or "Gutsu" who raised the bar at those Olympics, her difficulty was a little below them. Nevertheless and I insist...IT WAS A JOY TO WATCH HER BALLETIC TRADEMARK FROM HEAD TO TOES !!!
That routine for me is the ultimate classical gymastics on floor. Today onyl a handful, anna pavlova, jiang yuan does too, liukin although she moves beaut ifully she is slithgly robotic. but that's why she so consistent, whereas the previous two especially anna are way more inconsistent. with the 2009 change of code that only 8 skills will count, hope there will be more artistry in FX routines... looking fwd to seing those changes take place.
Yes I agree, Shannon was by the far the most polished and almost russian in her style.... very lithe and classical and beautiful.... Nastia is obviously Russian by heritage which I think is where she gets it from, unfortunately the code of points has been so ridiculously demanding that nothing looks easy anymore, everything looks like a huge raggedy effort... and Nastia looks as bad, its not her fault, but she does.
Shannon is by far my fave US gymnast (maybe McCool too)
What I love most about this clip is the thunderous applause at the end. The feeling of a world stage and the nodding approval of the audience..you don't find that in every meet, mostly at the olympics, this definitely displays that. Also, great classic 90's floor routine with the "risky" two full ins!
Some people seem to forget that the tumbling only takes up a quarter or so of the actual routine. In terms of extension, overall form, and presentation, Miller outclassed the field.
She certainly did not. Boginskaya was better in terms of extension and form. In terms of presentation Onodi had a far more interesting routine with much better music choice, much more expression, more personality, and more interesting choreography. Milo and Bontas had much better form on their tucked twisting double saltos then Miller who cowboys her legs horribly on them. All that in addition to Miller's much easier and less explosive tumbling. Her tie for bronze on floor was a true joke.
I think it's ok to have differing opinions, don't you? Bogi at this point had lost a bit of her lustre on floor, although I still pulled for her. Onodi ideally would have been my gold medal winner, and Milo could have tied or taken silver - either way her tumbling was pretty awesome despite bad dance.
To say Miller's bronze was a "true joke" is going a little far. I have seen your very anti-american comments all over YouTube, so it doesn't surprise me (not that I am pro-American either) ...
I am not anti-American gymnasts as you claim, although I understand how it might seem that way since I am definitely not a fan of either Zmeskal or Miller. I actually do like Retton, Patterson, Shawn Johnson, Liukin. Zmeskal I dont like since I think she is so overhyped and was lucky to get a gift World AA title. Millers gymnastics quality I see and do think she is a great gymnast, much better then Zmeskal, but her annoying fan club who seem to think she is a goddess make it hard to love her.
This fanclub you whine about actually only come out when idiots like you make stuff up to try and make Miller look bad. You follow around Miller videos on you tube just to insult her because you a fanatic Nastia fan. For someone that hates Shannon you sure make a lot of comments about her.
Yes but dont let that put you off her, I feel the same because Im torn between supporting gymnasts and feel were treated unfairly, but then the whole American ethos of ' WE ARE THE BEST!' does get grating and makes it hard to feel empathy towards the US gymnasts because they seem so over-supported as it is.
And dont even mention the fact American gymnasts have historically been heavier then the Russians/Romanians/Chinese.
Because then you'll be xenophobic, inciting Anorexia, blah blah blah.
It's a bit unfair to hold Shannon's fans against her, though. She worked really hard to get where she was, and it's not exactly her fault that people "think she is a goddess," which I highly doubt is true anyway.
You dislike Miller, but like Retton? Speaking of jokes, let's talk about MLR's AA-gold in Los Angeles. To me, the fact that she is given so much credit for the first American all-around gold (which she never would have medaled in if the Soviets hadn't boycotted the Olympics) is waaay more annoying than Miller's fan club, which by the way, she can't help.
Yes that is right. I very much like Retton and dont care for Miller. Retton was powerful, exciting, full of personality and dynamic. Miller is a talented but drab gymnast who performs to nauseating weepy violin music and has a prissy and same old same old quality to her gymnastics. She is no innovator like Khorkina or the Chinese. She has as little personality as some of the robotic Romanians. And yes I think her fans are crazy, it isnt her fault but it still doesnt endear her to people.
I can see where you're coming from. Still, Miller had wonderful technique and form, both areas in which Retton was pretty abyssmal. I guess I just love Mostepanova so much that I really can't like MLR, since Olga was cheated of an Olympic gold because of the boycott.
Yeah even though I like MLR Mostepanova would have cleaned up in LA without the boycott. Still I am glad MLR won in LA amongst who was their over the boring Szabo. I agree Mary Lou didnt have great form and technique on beam, and to some extent even bars. I think her form and technique on floor and vault was excellent though, in addition to her great power and difficulty of course.
One thing she has over Retton is that she was back to back World AA champion (yes I know Khorkina was three-time AA champ), and is titled to currently (but sadly not for long) to be the most decorated American gymnastic having 16 World/Olympic medals. She has a legacy that Nastia can also fulfill.
I am not saying Retton was more decorated though, just why I like her and some other American gymnasts more than Miller. One doesnt automaticaly have to like the gymnast with the biggest medal haul otherwise Khorkina would have to be everyones favorite gymnast, and Milo's one of everyone's favorite Romanian gymnasts ever, LOL!
I was just saying that Shannon has a huge legacy. There's also technique and style and skills that set them apart. Shannon has awesome lines for bars and beam while Retton has the power for vault and floor.
@PLANETIMAGE1 thanks. That is even more telling. If it is just on medal count to who is best Gogean is the greatest gymnast of her generation. Obviously there is more to consider.
@12bmills have u seen nastia now? she stinks ur just some crazy BAISED nastia stalker, nastia can't keep up with the difficulty now a days, plus she has no grace just leaps and prissy hand movements
@luv4cookie1 First of all, BAISED isn't a word. Second of all, Shannon is more my favorite gymnast than Nastia. If you compare her to a lot of gymnasts at Beijing, she was graceful. I don't know where you have been. Now a days, she's tired from the Olympics. I said that because she's only 2 more medals away from tying with Shannon for most decorated gymnast in US history, which when she gets back to top form, can accomplish.
no baised is a word, i acually looked it up just to make sure i dont make a fool of myself again, lol. but i dont think nastia will be a contender for 2012, her gymnastics has really decreased and she is not as consistent as she was before the oympics, plus she was 18 in bejing she would be 22 in london, i really dont think she can keep up with everyone.
@luv4cookie1 Oksana Chusovitina competed with Shannon in 1992. She won the silver on vault in 2008. She's 33. That proves age is only a number in gymnastics. Nastia still has 2 years. You never know.
i understand that i think Oksana is an amazing gymnats, though i have watched recent videos of Nastia's preformances on beam, and she is loosing her consistency, but is still god, SO you are right who knows?
not true at all. and retton was not exciting, all she did was smile and score 10's yay! 10's were so common in 1980's they werent special at all now SHUT UP
Oh, I never thought she deserved the gold medal. Ideally Onodi would have had it solely, but as much as I think Miller was a gorgeous gymnast I think the floor final results were fair enough.
Oh yeah definitely. Shannon's first vault was clearly a 10. Unless they looked at her arms, which were bent, but I don't think they would've been that strict. At least have her tied for the gold with Tatiana.
I think 1 of Bontas or Gutsu should have won the bronze by themselves here. They each had a major mistake, which cost them both; but Miller had hard landings on every pass, disguised as that silly lunge landing that was allowed, and while her tumbling was very difficult, those other two much more difficult.
well the name of the game is STICK, and gutsu and bontas made mistakes, and shannon was more consistent that night, but i do have to say if bontas or gutsu both hit there routines they might of gave shannon a run of her money
Gutsu under-rotated her first pass so badly, I'm surprised she didn't get a 9.9. I think she got the preferential treatment for having won the all-around.
I agree that Gutsue's floor optional floor routines were over scored (Team - 9.912, All-Around - 9.925, Even Finals - 9.912) at the Olympic Games. She was under-rotated on her first pass in each performance. Even though Miller had no major mistakes in this performance, I still think that it was not as strong as many other athletes at the time.
I agree totally. She should have been 6th in the final behind Milo, Onodi, Bontas, Zmeskal, Gutsu, and Miller. The floor final judging was definitely wrong. Onodi had the overall best routine and should have won. Milo I would have 2nd because of Bontas and Gutsu's mistakes. Zmeskal should have been tied for the bronze instead of Miller if there was a tie. Tshusovitina also was scored too low for the out of bounds being her only mistake, not a medal but should have been higher then 9.812.
the floor judging was fine, she hit all her tumbling passes, with grace and elegance, i certaintley dont think this was a gold medal preformance, but bontas and gutsu both had major breaks, which shannon did not on her routine, so if gutsu or bontas would of hit i dont think shannon would have medaled, but she hit her routine and got the bronze end of story.
