Babe ruth was not a great athlete. He was an overweight, sloppy drunk who was a legendary womanizer. Booze, food, broads and cigars. And ALOT of it. He could hit a baseball long and far tho. Good hitter, terrible athlete.
I love the highlighting.. Every time we review swings it is very difficult to really see and understand what a coach is explaining. This method of highlighting makes it clear as day to how The Babe distributed his weight forward and really had a nice coil. -Coach Jeanette
Please take a look at Babes front side and his push and the postion of his hands when his front foot comes down.....please listen to the commentator's explanation!!!!!!
totally agree about Ichiro. They both use their forward momentum. When Ruth would miss, he'd sometimes spin all the way around thanks to his momentum. Ruth said he modeled his swing after Shoeless Joe, who I wish we had more film of. I wonder if Ichiro modeled his swing after Ruth, which would be interesting since he isn't a power hitter
Everyone talks about the swing of people like Williams and Will Clark and Brett... but no doubt in my mind Ruth was the hitter he was because he had the most awesome swing mechanics of all time.
@sciontcdude Teams didn't wear numbers on their uniforms most of Ruth's career. The 1929 New York Yankees decided to put numbers on their players to show their batting order. Ruth batted #3 and Gehrig #4. The Cleveland Indians introduced numbers the same year. By 1932, all teams had numbers.
@sciontcdude the yanks put numbers on later in babes career. without much thought they just gave him 3 because he batted third and lou 4 for batting fourth
Idk if this was mentioned in the video; I didn't watch the whole thing, but it seems like he incorperated many aspects of proper pitching mechanics into his swing.
I'm a Giants fan and proud of Barry Bonds beating a world record but Babe Ruth was a natural slugger! I mean damn! That guy was hella powerful when he hits the ball. Incredible! Just imagine if he was in this time with those skills and took steroids. lol
@tachikoma747 I don't want to seem disrespectful but I could care less about that player.... unless if he was a Giants player then I'd be waving my Giants hat to the sky. lol I seriously doubt he will beat a world record, he's got a LOOONNG ways to go. Bonds would have still beat the world record, it just would have taken him longer if he came clean but he already had it in him to beat the world record!! Yes he did! lol
@quizmo1000 He would not need steroids as Bonds, A Roid and so many others do today. If he played with todays pitchers, short fences, God knows what he would hace accomplished!!!!
that lines up what with ted said to be careful not to drop your hands too much because it may disturb timing and rhythm. so ruth hitches and get the hands back in the same spot they started. good analysis. now how can we copy ruth? i mean ruth copied (jackson) right? and everyone else copied ruth....
It is obvious Sadahiro Oh, the all time home run hitter, copied Babe Ruth. Check the video on youtube. Clearly the Babe's technique is worth replicating considering how far behind him his contemporaries were in the dead ball, pre-steroid era.

He also struck out a lot, it looks like he was using full power motions, so when he connected, watch out, he was also a great athlete.

@sciontcdude yes but you have to remember he never had to face African american pitchers, it would of been a lot different to say the least

@drews122396 It's well documented that I barnstormed against negro league players many times. I hit the crap out of their pitching. Case closed.

@quizmo1000 Which is why Albert Pujols is such a nice breath of fresh air. IF he winds up setting a new home run record it will be a clean one.

@aneimn Actually the Babe was such an admirer of Shoeless Joe Jackson that he copied his swing.
