. The nation was divided into four distinct bands: the Chaui, the Kitikahki, the Petahauirita and the Skidi. The Pawnee were excellent hunters. Their abilities with the bow and arrow were finely honed. The Pawnee entered into agreements to cede their lands to the United States Government in 1833, 1848, 1857 and 1872. In 1875 they were moved from Nebraska to the Pawnee Indian Agency. Today the official count of Pawnee is put at just over two thousand, five hundred people
Pawnee. A confederacy belonging to the Caddoan family. The name is probably derived from parika, a horn, a term used to designate the peculiar manner of dressing the scalp-lock, by which the hair was stiffened with paint and fat, and made to stand erect and curved like a horn. This marked features of the Pawnee gave currency to the name and its application to cognate tribes. The people called themselves Chahiksichahiks, `men of men.'
The reason for the confusion between the relationship of the Arikara and the Pawnee is because of this Clanship which many dont know about. All Clans and even the four bands had various accents and dialects. So basically the Arikara tribe is just a severed Pawnee Clan.
Well see, the Pawnee have four bands that make up the Pawnee Nation, the four bands include The Skidi Federation, Chaui, Kithehaki or Kitkehaxki and Pitahaureat or Pitahawirata. The Skidi band is a Federation because it is made up of Family Clans unlike the other bands. At one point in time the Arikira were one of these Clans that made up the Skidi Federation. They ended up going further north and ended up becoming isolated.
