  • What a wonderful human being.

  • *looks at the dislike bar*

Yes! I knew nobody could ever, ever dislike Stephen Fry!

  • Stephen Fry is so book!

  • I don't care what words people use. As long as they don't use "your" when "you're", and "there" when "they're". You know what I mean. As long as the sentence makes sense. I proudly use words (or bastardized initials) like "lulz" to express humour.

  • I love him for this. He's pointing out and using more or less the exact same arguments as I have when someone gets snobby about languages. I absolutely love languages, everything about it. Dialects, sociolects, accents, slang, old, new, sound, writing system, history etc. It's all wonderful.

  • This is what I hate about Fry. He's a middleclass, prep-school and Cambridge educated middle-aged white guy with a middleclass English accent and a vocabulary as if he had swallowed the Oxford Dictionary - not to mention the millions in the bank - telling the audience how wonderful people who 'evolve the language' are, overlooking the fact that people who converse solely in the lingua franca of the street will never be accepted at Cambridge nor find employment beyond flipping burgers.

  • @Smallpotato1965 You don't have to be accepted to Cambridge to listen to someone speak. If someone is poor, that doesn't automatically mean that he or she is a moron.

  • @BocajFreedman Who said anything about being poor? My poor, workingclass grandparents, who had to leave school at twelve, knew more about grammar and spelling and had a larger vocabulary than most modern comprehensive schoolteachers.

Those who think that spelling or grammar 'don't matter' are deluded, arrogant or - worse! - want to keep the poor man 'in his place'.

  • Haha, I like how he bursts Jonathan's bubble.

Also loving the adoption of the word book to mean cool, and why it's happened. Two key presses! Who does have the time!? :)

I'm going to start using it. I'll be so book...
