How exactly does a session player who performed on three hits in forty years get so famous? According to Wikipedia, the guy never sang lead or wrote any of his songs.
@pretorious700 The fact I needed to wikipedia his irrelevant career says a lot. I actually assumed the guy wrote and sang on his songs, but like I said he is just a overglorified session guitarist. "Wildly popular"? You his PR guy?
I like Santana, and Smooth and Black Magic Woman are two good songs, but no one seems to really be mentioning other things he's done. He has tons of songs that are good, not just the two that are the most famous.
I hate how everytime Santana launches a "comeback", he gets a Brazilian grammies. He's a good guitarist, but nowhere near as good as Clapton, Gilmour, etc.
@tah83236 Agreed, 9 times outta 10 i just shake my head when norton starts in about music. Same goes with his who and zeppelin opinions, apparently both bands are horrendously over rated, where as kiss, a band that sells everything from music to fuckin shoelaces and air fresheners, is what? groundbreaking? Jim's got a great sense of humour, his taste in music on the other hand, is to say the absolute least, questionable.
Saying Sooth was one of the best pop songs of the last 20 years is like saying the bout of diarrhea after eating a lot of Trix is the best diarrhea of the last 20 times. Theres worse and some of it was kind of alright. It was certainly colorful, but it still sucked. Maybe if anyone else had been singing it, and if I'd heard it fifty thousand fewer times, it could have been good.
@lastunusedname Really? I think Rob Thomas is awesome. Did a great job with Smooth. I think you're the first person I've ever heard that from... I still don't like Santana though.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Santana is such overrated shit. Every time I hear the first few notes of Samba Pati I wanna fuckin shoot everyone in sight. And as for Smooth? That's the fucking international anthem of the greasy douchebag.
as a guitarist, i never understood why this guy is considered so legendary. technically, he doesn't play anything very impressive sounding. but yea, he gets away with being "soulful" with every shitty note he bends.
@TigerTaint He's not especially talented. There's nothing in his playing that makes anyone with half a brain sit up and go "whoa, that takes skills". The only "impressive" thing he does is make easily impressionable young cumdumpsters swoon and go all doe-eyed when he starts strumming his "whhaaaow-whaa" chords.
I'm getting sick and tired of these solo artists that name their after them self. (i.e, Brittany Spears, Ozzy Osbourne, Santana) They should only be able to do that if they them self write, play and record every instrument used. If they can't, join a band like everyone else.
Santana is a good guitarist but he should've played guitar in a BAND and learned his place.... sry I just hate guitarists jerking off to themselves. Fuckin boring.
I hate Santana so much. Every time I hear those opening chords to Samba Pati I shudder. All those stupid faggy metro retards that half close their eyes and start to slowly sway their heads to it like it's some kind of legendary musical elixir. And if you don't like it, there's something wrong with you like you just don't "appreciate real music" or some crap. Ahh boo.
Point to consider: Black Sabbath's guitarist Tonny Iommi was ranked at #86 by Rolling Sones Magazine's 2003 list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time" whereas Carlos Santana was ranked as #15. I rest my case.
Santana is a pioneer. When he dared combine rock, blues, latin & jazz, he was the first one to do so and did it brilliantly. His solos are lyrical and full of beauty that no heavy metal guitarist can ever achieve. His sustained notes full of expression similar to human voice, you can only find such subtlety of expression in the greatest violinists / saxophone players. Such nuances will escape you if you've gone partly deaf from listening to loud metal which just blends into white noise.
that song he did with the dude from matchbox 20 or whatever is one of the most UNLISTENABLE PIECES OF GARBAGE... way to go, carlos. you're immortalized in CVS store radio station history.
He's one of those artists who's a better player than writer.I respect his talent since the man is technically a great guitarist, but his song writing leaves a bit to be desired.
And his politics are to the Left of Che Guevara, one of his idols. Former Cubans escapees have told him to his face what a monster he was, but Carlos The Leftist Know It All never believes them.
that really is true. for some reason he thinks ozzy and kiss are the greatest bands in the history of music and knows very little about anything else, but i just did an awful presentation on Santana in a spanish class and listened to his stupid jazz fusion avant-garde stuff is just painful. i prefer people who are better songwriters then they are musicians and santana is the exact opposite. and i'm in college, they the fuck am i doing presentations like a child
They are 100% right about "Smooth". Carlos deludes himself that because he's Latin, everything he does is automatically "soulful", when the fact is, that song is totally cliched, lyrically and musically, so no matter how much Latin percussion, horns and his guitar are in it, cliche is cliche, lame is lame.
right. i think hes done some pretty interesting stuff in the past but that "smooth" garbage...its one of those songs you only hear when your at the dentist.
Santana is to Latin musics what The Pogues are to Irish folk music: tasteless, commercialized, watered-down, easily digested drivel. At least the Gipsy Kings can play proper Flamenco palos when they care to.
@SayNoToPC How is Santana cliched? His music has advanced and changed a great deals over the years but I don't see how it is in any way cliched. Please explain it to us who are not music majors.
@SayNoToPC The first I ever heard from Santana was that cheesy, shitty tune he did with that guy out of Matchbox 20. In that regard he never had any credibility to lose, for me. He was always a parody of himself. The fact that he probably thinks he's brilliant makes it worse. Santana prove that there is more to musicianship than just skill. You need taste as well. Santana has skill and experience but no taste whatsoever. Matchbox 20 ? What the fuck is that about ? I hate Santana.
Who's the moron who started calling everyone from outside of Italy "Latin", where the term came from? Why do we have to listen to nonwhite "Hispanics" go on about their pride in something they have absolutely no real relation too? Even "Hispanic" bugs me, since most Central and South American countries declared independence from Spain, where they got the word in the first place, but at least there's a little blood relation there. There's nothing whatsoever linking them to Rome.
Even funnier, is you never hear it applied to Italians, the only ones who have any right to the designation in the first place. I can't wait until political correctness is destroyed and it's advocates are murdered via disembowelment, and their children are sold into slavery. Good times.
i am a guitarist and one of my fav guitarists is carlos,
his technique is excellent and his sound is probably one of the best guitar sounds there is.
but that supernatural album where he did that song smooth etc truly did suck.
the instrumental version of smooth is good but that singer sucks fat ones.
its like carlos just sold out when he did supernatural.
but anthony and jimmy have no taste and are just jealous haters.
opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one and everyone elses stinks.

Santana is great, but listening to a guitar player alone has no appeal (Vai and Satriani anyone) and forcing other stuff in there makes it boring.
