  • Question! I recently bought a Taylormade Burner driver, 9.5 degree loft. But Im hitting it on the heel and its not very fun at all...whats a quick fix?

  • @sailors2011 maybe the posture-distance problem. I saw many good players aiming the ball with the toe or heel of the club instead of the center. 'Aim the ball with the toe side of the club head' will be the quick fix.

I often hit toe shot so that I aim the ball close to the heel of my club. It works

  • Well well that is the best vidio I have ever watched and I watched hundreds of them well done Shawn it has helped my game in dsitance and on targret I cant thank you enougth Regards John Munro

  • @232muffin Thank you John! Just uploaded an updated version for this video too this weekend; called "2 ball drill revisited" Shawn

  • I have tried to hit with lag for years but I ALWAYS push it or slice it right. I can NEVER strike the ball with good lag without leaving the club face open. No idea how to fix that. Swinging with lag is easy, striking the ball with the clubface square WHILE lag swinging is very hard.

  • @CideousNx It doesn't matter that the club face is a little bit open. Try hit the ball from inside-out so that the club face is closed in relation to the real line. Now, you get a decent draw.

another solution can be the 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock drill. With swing forward & backward, keep the wrists relax and you will have the feeling of wrist rotation.

  • I love you.

  • re: 2 ball drill -- great drill for practice. But what about on the course? How do I get the CNS to light up and go through the ball and through an imaginary second ball? I tried imagining another ball, that doesn't work. I tried to pick out a blade of grass, that doesn't work either. Only in practice with the second ball do I feel the compression through the ball. Thanks.

  • Beginning at 9:04 I wonder what Ben Hogan would have thought about this advice (hips leading). Hogan taught that the torso should wind up and lead the hips.

  • @copeland45 Sorry, I think you are very wrong in what you wrote.

  • Wow, I went out the drving range and tried this concept and BOY did I hit some great shots, your totally right Shawn, b4 I was hitting fat shots and shanks all because my focus was wrong, I wasn't focusing on the target but focusing on hittng the ball. Cant wait to try this on the course.!! Thanks heaps shawn!!

  • Lots of good stuff there Shawn, love the analogies. Lag is so important and mostly illusive in the majority of golfers. Isn't it centrifugal force that unhinges the wrists in the down the swing?

  • @EverydayGolfCoach Yes! And thank you for the kind words! You will love the video "stop crashing; shawn clement" which will demonstrate in another way what you are talking about here; All the best! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn

I think the tip at 8:10 also helps to keep the body very centered with the correct spine tilt. It is helping me a lot and I have started to begin my backswing in that very manner. It is really paying off. Thanks.

  • Love this, as a newby to golf you make it all the more appealing by comparing to other sports allowing a wider understanding to the unknowing, by the way, its goal posts, not upright for football/soccer. Brilliant vid!

  • Love this video as a newby to golf, you observe and compair to other sports allowing a wider understanding to the unknowing. Im not sure if I am going to like golf, but, you make it all the more appealing, brilliant!

  • hi shawn, i've only just discovered your tuition videos and they are remarkable!!! i've watched more golf tuition videos than i care to mention and yours are head and shoulders above the rest. this sounds very strange shawn but i've had several lessons from a reputable x-pro and seemed to do well whilst being taught but since then i've been for 3 rounds this week and i played horrifically. my main problem is that i seem to top the ball off the fairway (rather play from rough) please, please help

  • Hi Shawn,

This video has changed my game! I used to be a caster of the club, hitting the ball from the outside-in, tilting my head forward. Oh, and with zero lag.

Your tip of using a back swing like golfers of the 1900 did, (min 8:10) unlocked the power in my swing. Once I started doing that, LAG...magically appeared!!

This back swing allowed me to create club head speed were i needed it and let gravity take care of the rest... Guys it WORKS!!

You're an amazing teacher. Thank you. Francesco

  • Been revisiting some of our videos lately. I must say that this one right here is in my top 5 of all. I love the way you explain the focus and width in the swing. This is what has helped me know exactly how the golf swing feels through the ball. Still hitting the ball very well these days and developing a repeatable golf swing that will come naturally on the course. Thanks again Mr. Shawn Clement....you're the man!!

  • Shawn, quick question. Do you advocate using an impact bag for practice. I have one and have only used it a short time. I'm not sure if it's helping. After watching this video, I'm wondering if using an impact bag will have me focusing too much on the ball instead of where my intended target is. What do you think? Thanks for all your very helpful videos. I have watched many of them and appreciate all your help.

  • @mjburke43 You would be correct! If you do use the impact bag, do it to practice the heavy momentum, meaning that you would be using the weight of the arm-club unit to hit the shot; see "golf pro lesson tilted spiral part 2" for this one; Shawn

  • Hi shawn, I am a right handed player. Is that such thing as left strong grip and right weak grip(the V pointing at my left shoulder)..... I got the same thing too delofting too much on my long irons. hooking my driver... So what type of grip u suggest for my left and right hand?

  • I bought his dvd and will say, he is the best teacher I have ever watched. I have watched a lot of them too! I had a decent game but he has helped me improve a lot. I also play effortlessly without being worn out after a round. Thank You Shawn!!!!!

  • what handicap do you play off, it seems u have developed such a consistent swing even if u dont practise?

  • hi shawn

great video. i just have a quick question. i seem to hit my 7 iron the same distance as my 4 iron. any advice?

    thanks

  • And you hook the driver right? Sounds like you have a grip that is too strong; you are de-lofting the 7 iron and the loft on the 4 gets too low you cannot benefit from it; review your grip and make sure you feel braced against the left side through impact with your head back of the ball but top of sternum in front like the "golf pro lesson take better divots" video; the one leg drill is great for feeling the right brace as well; Shawn

  • A truly brilliant video with a lot of inspirational techniques. I had no idea the divot was supposed to be in-front of your ball. One would assume the perfect shot would be the ball at the lowest point of your swing. Thank you ever so much!

  • Thanks for the great comment! You can see my "golf pro lesson slow motion" and "golf pro lesson compress through the ball" videos for more on this subject!

    Shawn

  • You make it look so simple and you explain it so well that it's sad most people cannot get the concept right. Great drill and analogies as always, and funny too.

  • Another great video, Shawn!!

  • Hey Shawn great videos have learned alot im going to get your dvds. Question I have recorded my swing and I release early . The hit through the ball helps but I think part of my problem is I have tendonitis (tennis elbow) in my right (front) elbow. My left stronger arm takes over and I release early causing pulls and pull hooks. The tennis elbow isnt really bad its just annoying as hell and my game has suffered. Any suggestions.

  • I just watched this video and did some practice swings and I can just feel the improvement. Now I can't wait till I hit the range tomorrow to try this tip out. I'll report back my success.

  • This tip has changed my swing. I was guilty of hitting the ball instead of swing through it, and now my swing is much more pure and fluid. My ball striking is leaps and bounds better. Thanks, Shawn! I'm definitely going to order your DVD. Wish I could take lessons in person.

  • God this is soooo helpful man thank you.Every one always says I have really good practice swing and bad swing as soon as I put the ball in front of me.This helped alot Thank you again

  • Shawn ,I use the driver set up as presented in your driver tip video. Ball teed off left heel or toe ,and driver aligned on center ,shoulders, hips and feet aligned with target. Because the focas is on a point 4 to 6 inches behind the ball where the swing of the driver is to bottom out, you are no longer hitting the ball ,but swinging thru the ball to the target. its the best best feeling shot in my bag ,and I strive to achieve that same feeling in all my shots.Thank you for all that you do.

  • This video really opened my eyes to what I have been doing wrong the last 5 years. Just wished I had seen it sooner, when I just started playing. Changing will be hard. This video, distance to ball, and one leg drill really helped my swing. Thank you!

  • Shawn,

Thanks for this. im going to make it my swing thought for the week. Its so true. My practice swing is top 50 in the world. My shot swing isn't top 50 in my club! Hitting the ball causes all sorts of problems and swing break downs-when I concentrate on that smooth 'through the ball SWING-not hit' well thats when I hit my best shots-sorry, SWING my best shots!

    Cheers PAL

PS Enjoying your DVD-I will send you that review of yours and Leadbetter's soon!

  • Thanks for the comment and looking forward to it!

    Shawn

  • You are the man, you have cut at least 10 strokes from my game and getting better and better if I just can remember to swing through the ball not at it!

  • Thinking it this way is a lot easier for me! Great lesson!

  • hey i have a question about my swing and i think it has to do with what you address here. about half the time that i hit my irons i hit them inconsistently and usually catch them off the heel and they go shooting off to the right. what i picture in my head is that my lag is actually lasting too long and i dont whip the clubface back into position and keep it out there causing me to get it off the heel i hope you can picture what i am saying. any tips on my mindset on how to correctly get through

  • Have a look at my "golf pro lesson bridging flat wrist with hinged wrists" video; it is right along the lines of what you are talking about; Shawn

  • THANKS a lot Shawn for your excellent video! It got rid of my fat shots completely and I can enjoy golf more now. I learned that the more you focus on the ball the more you will tend to 'hit' it instead of swinging through it. I think this lesson should be promoted more considering that there are not that many golf tips that teach you how to focus on the ball at address. Keep up the good work!!!

  • i guess this works quite well but the thing is getting the timing right. I sometimes really try hard to do this but release a fraction early producing a huge low hook because my hands have rolled over. I guess it just takes practice ey shawn.

  • Yes; have you seen the "you tube analogies page" on my website? The first subject is the Bilateral golf swing" and is designed to fine tune the timing in the swing; see all the videos associated to this video and this page!

    Shawn

  • Hey again! I really took into account of hitting through the ball, and i went to the driving range today and hit every ball in between the 230-260 consistently with a small fade or draw. It seems now i hit though the ball and if i pull the drive it doesnt have a low hook and if i leave the wrists cocked too long it still goes high with a small fade. THANKS SHAWN

  • Shawn: I've improved my swing a lot in my opinion. However, after seeing my swing on video ( I still hook the ball A LOT) I notice my arms are collapsing to my body. Any advice or videos to watch?

  • See the "you tube Analogies" page on my website and check out the first subject and the videos associated with it;

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn, I think that you should promote this video more. I think that it's one of the most important ones. It took me awhile to buy into this concept, but now that I have my game has changed forever. I think that some guys hear about the ball just getting in the way but don't actually practice visualizing this all important redirection of target focus. Thank you for explaining it so well.

    Dan

  • Yeah Man!!

    Great comment verbalized!

    Shawn

  • hey shawn, ive been watching your videos for a couple of months now, and have succesfully gotten rid of my slice, so thanks.. but i played this morning and seemed to get a lot of push shots (to the right), with my normal shot being a controllable draw... would this be a good drill to get rid of my push, and if not, is there any videos you can advise me on to get rid of it

  • Yes;

At one point, the arms are collapsing against the body either on the way back or in the transition; see the "Golf Pro lesson arms falling down plane", "golf pro lesson arms in front of body", "golf pro lesson elbow close?" as a start; if you don't find it there, let me know...Thanks for the question! Shawn

  • You grip the handle of the chinese paper yo-yo as you would a golf club and slowly move to the top of your backswing. Then proceed with the rest of the swing, focussing on maintaining your wrist hinge, or lag. The key is to not allow the yo-yo to release pre-impact. This is sometimes referred to as casting. If you release the yo-yo at the proper timing, same as a good golf swing, the enertia from the swing should release or extend the yo-yo to the right of your target line. Can you picture this?

  • Casting a fishing rod is an outstanding lag analogy. Have you ever tried swinging a chinese yo-yo to demonstrate lag? It works great!

    Dan

  • Hey Dan!

Very cool comparison; is there a specific move in the chinese yoyo that I should look for?

    Shawn

  • Hey Shawn,

Just another great video! I don't even look at the ball anymore I look six inch. in front of ball and try to hit that spot which helps me with compression thanks to your drill. Should I do the same with my Hybrid's?

  • Yes; same with all clubs; it will just feel wider in the backswing with the hybrids;

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

I went out today and this tipped helped enormously. Played 9 holes afterwards and shooting +10 from my first game ever of +40 a month ago. My question is, I like to strike the ball cleanly taking little to no divot with irons. Am I doing myself a disservice by having no "compression" by not divoting? My 5 irons go about 165 and 9 to about 120 striking the ball cleanly.

Also do you get "compression" hitting off a mat like that?

  • Yes! And if you master the 2 ball drill and get both in the air like I showed you in this video, you will feel what compression is all about; The other video is "Golf Pro Lesson compress through the ball" Shawn

  • Shawn, what is THE swing thought to think about when playing?

    Target? tempo? ball?

    Thank you

    Petty

  • Hi Petty!

You are looking for "effortless and powerful momentum to a target"; hopefully you know what this feels like; never should you think of the ball or allow yourself to default to the ball; eyes stay on the ball but the focus is on momentum to your target...check out "Golf Pro Lesson alignment tweak" and "Perpetual Motion Drill" videos...Thanks for the great question!! Shawn

  • Shawn, in an earlier video, you commented that a left-handed player, playing right-handed, would have a dominant left hand approach. In this case, instead of the "skipping stone" analogy, would throwing a frizzbee be more applicable to this type of golfer?

  • Exactly! Right on!

    Shawn

  • hi Shawn:

Thanks for yours videos it really helpfull.

I fell really confident with 5, 6 , 7 , 8 and 9 irons, however 3, 4 iam not confident enough, could be for the angle face.

Second., all the swing at the same? driver swing its the same than 9?

    Thanks

    Christian

  • Hi Christian!

    Have a look at my "Golf Pro Lesson Modern driver part 2" and the "Golf Pro Lesson Swing Plane", "Perpetual motion drill" and the "Taut swing philosophy" videos; they will help you adjust to all clubs;

  • Shawn, I sometimes bottom out before the ball, never on a practice swing. Could you tell me a few things to rectify that.Thinking about buying your DVD.

    Thanks Peter

  • Sounds to me like you are still afraid of missing the ball and you are giving it way too much respect! See the "Golf Pro Lesson Swing Plane" and "How to repeat your practice swing"; then a great drill to bring your awareness to the swing is the "Sequence power drill" video and the "one leg drill" video;

    Shawn

  • Agreed...this is the best instruction on the internet I have found!

  • Very insightful, thanks!

  • Great explanation, very easy to understand in layman terms. Best golf instruction on the web...full stop. Keep up the good work buddy.

  • Thanks a lot! Very Much appreciated!

    Shawn

  • Shawn,

I think your videos are terrific. The issues of lag and release has perplexed me since I've started. This video worked great for me one day and horribly the next. I think I've finally figured out the problem: you focus on right hand release.Attempting to maintain lag causes me (and I bet 1,000's other)to also lag the left hand hinge past impact resulting in a slice or fade at best. I'd love an online instruction specifically explaining the mechanics of left hinge angle transition 2 impact

  • Hey Dean; I missed this one; sorry!

The videos you want to watch are "Bridging flat wrist with Hinged wrists", "Taut arms", "Catapult Power", and "Arm Motion"; I hope everything is going well! Thanks for the comment; Shawn

  • Shawn - this concept has been my downfall. Great practice swings with good divot locations ... then hit the ball BIG AND FAT. If I focus on the proper divot location instead of the ball, I generally hit the ball solidly (with an occasional shank). BUT - the concept still FREAKS me out. Do you address this on your DVD too?

    Chris

  • You bet! In the dvd I show you how to train with your eyes closed or blindfolded; you know that there is a blind golfer's association out there right? We have the Canadian Open for the blind coming up soon...Blind practice will make you aware of things you did not realize existed in the golf swing because of so many visual distractions!! And it is the visual that freaks you out...Great question and comment! Shawn

  • hi shawn,do you have any videos which show the club post impact + up? as if i was standing in front of you on the target line, its a great visual to see, especially for the over the toppers who swing to much across the feet line post impact.thanks shawn-peter.

  • I have put out a video recently called "Compress through the ball" which shows the first 2 shots of only my lower legs and impact through the ball-turf to show how long the club stays down in the turf past the point of impact; but this could make for a fun video; I will see what I can do!

    Shawn

  • I tried this today. The first ball went straight and the secong went almost sideways right. Your videos have helped, I hit the ball straighter now but with no distance at all. 5 irons are carrying just over 100 yds at the range. This game is tough.

  • If that is the case; there are a few things you need to settle in your fundamentals; I recommend you go straight to my website and order my DVD series; it is priority sequenced with technique, training and on course application...4 hours for 40.00 is very cheap for this kind of education and there are many similarities to tennis! All my 90 plus you tube vids are on my site as well...Shawn

  • Thank you so much. You are wonderful, you have pointed out my mistake - I always want to "kill" the ball, that why I didn't improve much. Now I understand the concept and my game improved. Greeting from Hong Kong

  • Sos un MAESTRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    You are a MASTER

You deserve the GRAND SLAM on Teaching!!!!

    GRACIAS!!!

    Bequet from Argentina

  • Thanks for all the great comments guys!

Wishing all of you fairways and greens!

    Shawn

  • I have to comment on it before I finish watching. Thas is exactly what happens to me! Everything seems so fine when I just practice the swing, but it turns into hell when I actually try to hit the ball. It confused me alot. I am glad that I am not the only one who is experiencing this. Thank you for this great video!! Now back to watching =)

  • I have never seen anyone feeling ,speaking and teaching golf the way you do shawn !you are unbelievable! My question is : do you train players on the tour? is yes ,who ? if no, WHY ?

keep on going shawn because you are the Boss! Edouard from paris.

  • Thank you for your kind words Edouard! I have coached 1 girl from zero to #1 in Ontario in 3 years and she is now on a full ride in Washington State...I am also currently working with a solid prospect in the men's...Day by Day mon ami! Shawn

  • hi shawn.. great vids.. n happy new year..!!

i had tried the two balls drill.. hav a question.. should both the balls fly the same direction..?? i mananged to hit both the balls.. however.. i realise i seem to hit down a lot on the back ball.. is that suppose to be the right way..?? i once ripped a piece of 'grass' frm the practice mat..!!

  • The first ball will fly straight and the second will naturally go left...The best is to try to send your swing momentum across the turf and slightly to the right for the first ball, grazing the second ball on the right edge...then as the swing squares itself through impact, you will catch the second ball square or slightly closed; the first goes full distance and straight or slightly right and the second goes about 40 yards less and will be straight or slightly left...

    Shawn

  • what happened

  • Good stuff...loved the "...casting is a good thing. Just cast at the target". This is a great mental picture. I'm taking it to the course today.

  • Excellent video shawn. I was wondering when do you actually swing at the ball to get maximum power or distance, some one told me you should excellerate the swing to the ball anout 2-3 inches b4 you conect on the tee. I'm confused.

  • Hi and thanks for your comment;

    The Ball is NOT the target; it is being collected then moved towards THE TARGET. Have a look at "Golf Pro Lesson Catapult Power" for a little more on the subject;

    All the best, Shawn

  • Great to see the video. Also, it's good to know the actual moving path of the club due to the natrual gravity. Did you really mean the sequence of swing takeaway is: hip --> shoulder --> hands --> club, right? How about the downswing? the same sequence but reverse hip rotation?

  • Best thing is to look at my "Golf Pro Lesson Hogan Power move" and "hogan Power Drill" as well as the "golf Pro lesson Catapult Power"

    Thanks for your comment! Shawn

  • wow Shawn, finally a pro focusing his lesson on the release. I find all kinds of bandaids and drills to square the club, but never a lesson completely focused on releasing the club properly. I think it would come so much more natural to a golfer if the ball was moving like it is in other sports. Hitting a stationary object makes it so hard to focus 'out in front' of it. Thanks so much

  • Shawn- I was working on this at the range, and I found myself losing balance. I am wondering why. Also, how do I work on getting "inside" on my dowswing? Thanks man, your teaching is top notch.

  • The way to get through the ball in balance is with the proper spine tilt; go to "Golf Pro lesson Proper Spine Tilt" and "Top 25 Teacher Braced Tilt" and let me know...Thanks , Shawn

  • what you go round in on 18 holes, messege me plz,

    thanks m8

  • oops sorry m8, i meant a Canadian ..

  • Yeah; not bad Eh? Laughs...

  • not a bad kick fer a yank shawn (winks) even with the wrong shoes on. thx for the time and effort in making this and all your other vids, they are well appreciated by everyone i'm sure.

  • Took a minute and thirty-eight seconds for the penny to drop. I'm exactly like Joe so I'm off to practice this! I think its worth watching all the videos again to see what I missed the first time. Thanks Shawn.

  • Shawn,

This is one of the best videos I've run across! You analogies are dead on and very useful, continue with excellent work and tutorials.

    AJM,

  • thanks very much, great video

  • i am working on my lag, can't seem to keep the club face square on impact...

  • open or closed? Pushing to the right with a slice or pulling left with a hook?

    Shawn

  • well sometimes they fly straight left off the face. I am a lefty but i don't usually slice. The problem with my swing is i don't seem to be swinging through the ball and had zero lag. I am trying to work on distance control but when i swing with my hands well in front of the ball the face of the club doesn't seem to square up. thanks again. I will be checking out your winter package this week also.

  • To square the club means to maintain your centre; check out the "Golf Pro Lesson Head Steady", "Golf Pro Lesson Leverage Uphill" and "Golf Pro Lesson Catapult Power" videos for some good tips on that!

And yes, winter is the very best time to implement swing changes, spring is to fine tune and summer and fall are to play and perform! Talk soon, Shawn

  • this guy seems like the nicest person in toronto!

  • I don't know if I am the nicest, but I can tell you for certain that I care about you guys and your golf games!:)

    Shawn

  • well I think what you are doing on here is awesome.

I live in the gta and would like to get a lesson from you personally. How do i get a hold of you? I

  • Our website is golflearningcentre dot com and we are in Richmond Hill corner Bathurst and highway 7;

    Shawn

  • would i get you for a lesson or someone else?

  • Me of course...All you have to do is ask!:)

    Shawn

  • Excellent very helpful as always thank you very much keep up the good work

  • Great Stuff, Shawn.

  • Informative? Are you kidding me? That was the best lesson ever!!! Thank You Very Very much. I liked your soccer analyze which helped me understand very easily. Once again, Thank you!!

  • great video Sean, keep em coming.

  • hello mister clemshaw.

i really like your lessons. before playing i always look at the swing from steve lee. on the course i try to visualise his swing and fantastic ritme. thank you very much. good voice as well.

    john noy from utrecht holland.

  • Golfs like comedy its all about timing

  • very helpfull video i get that allot not focusing wen hitting the ball and looking at this i think this will be very helpfull i really want to try hitting the 2 balls lokks cool anyway thx should hopefully lower my handicap

  • your videos are great.. thanks a bunch

  • great tips as usual many thanks .sean

  • An interesting analogy would be as well to use pool. Pro´s do not look at the white ball the moment of striking, they always look at the object ball or location they are trying to hit. This way the follow trough needed for the appropriate spin are ensured. Great video!

  • Thanks again Shawn. That was very impressive hitting both balls like that. You make it look so easy.
