When Jan van Riebeeck landed in the Cape "Kaap de Goede Hoop" the Dutch started building the fort 3 days after landing. No one is as hard working as that, I''m proud to say that is my ancestry
you know the Netherlands is the only country ever to receive the death penalty?
By Philip II of Spain (aprox. 3million people at the time ). A revolt broke out under the leadership of William of Orange and after we kicked them out we esthablised The Seven United Netherlands (also referred to as the United Provinces of the Netherlands).
The Dutch were master of the sees for almost two centuries. And mastered the world economy no nation could match the Dutch. Some people realy do not understand what kind of achievment that is for one of the worlds smallest countries. Even today the Dutch have the highest quality Navy. It was only at that death of William III Stadhouder of Holland and King of England. That the British took our position and also holded it for 2 centuries.
I can't wait to see the replica of the Zeven Provinciën set sail. Tromp, de Ruyter, Van Speijk, Hein.. people really should know those names. Van Speyk is a bit obscure perhaps, but he was badass.
It´s really stunning to think that such a small country did such big things! I think Holland accomplished, relatively to its size, a great deal in this world!
The Netherlands have never been conquered by England. In the Dutch uprising their was military aid from Engeland in the form of the earl of Lancester. But he can be considered incompetetive in compare with Maurits of Orange the greatst commander of Europe in the 16th and 17th century.
The Netherlands conquered England in the 18th century, under the "Glorious revolution". Search for it on Wikipedia. Only after that, trading switched to London instead of Amsterdam. This is why The Netherlands is no longer the richest, but the Dutch economy is heavily entangled in the UK.
William the 3rd of the UK, is of Dutch origin, and conquered the UK with an 3 rmada 3 times the size of the spanish Armada. It moved in a square formation and people could see it from both Calais and Dover.
Yes, but Holland invaded England first succesfully in 1667 with the Trip over the Medway to Chatham, but conquerd it not in the 18th century, but in the 17th century in 1688.
The Dutch fleet of 1000 ships in 1688, was only outclassed in size during the Battle at Normandy in 1944, almost 3 centuries later.
Britain rules the waves, ha, i laugh at that, we defeated the ENglish fleet 5times major, England defeated us only 3times major, plus we saved a whole nation from extinction, yes the Dutch saved Danmark at slaget e oresund (slag om de Sont)
1) Brazil was a WIC colony (private company) that hardly had any regular Dutch troops. The Portuguese attacked Brazil during the 2nd Anglo-Dutch war because they knew they would be otherwise be defeated. The Dutch did not send troops to Brazil because they were focusing on the British. Unlike Portugal a serious enemy.
I understand you. Indeed the Netherlands has captured much of the Portuguese Asian empire, from the Persian Gulf to the Sry Lanka and parts of Indonesia, Portugal managed to reconquer the west: Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, etc.. and endured some in Asia. But if the Netherlands had to apply those years to his powerful Armada mostly in naval warfare with the British, ...
...the Portuguese Army in Europe was all too busy in the wars of Restoration of Independence from 1640 to 1668 against Spain in the Iberian Peninsula.
The reconquest of the Northeast of Brazil and Angola was made by Brazilian Portuguese settlers/colonists and local People in general and in majority against a Dutch army wich still had the advantage of German mercenary soldiers for the most part of its army.
2) After the 2nd Anglo dutch war the Dutch concentrated on Brazil again. They ruined Portugal by blocking the coast of Brazil for 2 years. In the East they took Ceylon (equally profitable) from the Portuguese. Then they prepared for an invasion of Brazil. The Portugese begged for a treaty. The Dutch (always merchants) agreed in a sale. They sold Brazil (Portugal paid a fortune in gold: tons and tons) and kept Ceylon.
People forget that England was outright vazalised by the Dutch, but ofcourse the English wouldnt call it that way...but uhm...we installed our man on the English throne....thats making a vasal, puppet, clientstate...however you wanna call it the Dutch pwnd with just half a million inhabitants amazing!
Failed? As to Brazil, learn history. Dutch Brazil was private enterprise. It hardly had any regular Dutch troops. Further, the only the Portugese could take it because the Dutch were at that time fighting the 2nd Dutch Anglo war focusing on the Brits. Afterwards they wanted Brazil back, blocked Brazil's coast for 2 years until Portugal was ruined, then prepared for invasion. To avoid this, Portugal accepted a treaty in which Brazil would stay Portuguese in exchange for 63 tons of gold.
Failed? No mate. As far as Africa is concerned: The Dutch never focused on Africa. Apart from South Africa, it has always been a side show to them and they neve gave much about either Angola or Mozambique. They never bothered to build out African trading posts into real colonies in the 19th century and even sold the ones left to the Brits in about 1876, cause they just couldn't be bothered with Africa.
Nederlandse VOC has gewoon de beste scheepen dier er waren een's hadden england en frankrijk oorlog verklaard op nederland wie had er gewonnen? NEDERLAND!

south africa was taken over by the british, same for the colonies in america, yet suriname came back in dutch hands after they traded it for new amsterdam ( New York ). The portugees where driven away from indonesia which was basically the most important to us.
You strike me as a dumbass. Which period are you talking about? Through the 1500s, The Turks were militarily superior to any Western power. On the world scene, the Ottoman empire was one of the emerging gunpowder empires. In the 1650s and after, the balance of military power gradually shifted to the west.
your right, but the turks did never fight the english and the french got always pwned by the english and other nations also, the dutch defeated the english in 2 of the 4 anglo-dutch wars and we were the only european superpower who ever conquered a british colony

But no offence, this was the 17th century, no need to get mad over it now.
The Dutch fought alot of wars with england, and won alot, but that is history, just like our collonies and stuff.
Dude, I know how powerful the Dutch fleet was. And yes, the Dutch won many wars against the English. But my point is that there were also other important powers, like the Ottomans, the English and even the Spanish armada. It's not that the Dutch fleet ruled the world.
If you know history, you know that the Dutch fleet won all battles against the Spanish fleet (IJsselmeer 1573, Lillo en Reimerswaal 1574, Grevelingen 1588, Gibraltar 1607, Matanzas 1628, Downs 1639.
De Spanish fleet won only at Haarlemmermeer in 1573 because they had a Dutch traitor Boussu as commander, and at Lepanto in 1571 against a much larger Ottoman fleet commanded by Ali Pasja.
De Dutch fleet won against the Swedish fleet at Listerdiep in 1644, Sont in 1658 and 1659, and Öland in 1676.
Maurice organised the rebellion against Spain into a coherent, successful revolt. He reorganised the army together with Willem Lodewijk, studied military history, strategy and tactics, mathematics and astronomy, and proved himself to be among the best strategists of his age. Paying special attention to the siege theories of Simon Stevin, he took valuable key fortresses and towns: Breda in 1590, Steenwijk in 1592, and Geertruidenberg in 1593.
These victories rounded out the borders to the Dutch Republic, solidifying the revolt and allowing a national state to develop behind secure borders. They also established Maurice as the foremost general of his time. Many of the great generals of the succeeding generation, including his brother Fredick Henry and many of the commanders of the English Civil War learned their trade under his command.
During the revolt, the United Provinces of the Netherlands, better known as the Dutch Republic, rapidly grew to become a world power through its merchant shipping and experienced a period of economic, scientific, and cultural growth. The first phase of the conflict can be considered to be the Dutch War of Independence.
The first phase of the conflict can be considered to be the Dutch War of Independence. The focus of the latter phase was to gain official recognition of the already de facto independence of the United Provinces. This phase coincided with the rise of the Dutch Republic as a major power and the founding of the Dutch colonial empire.
In 1628, Admiral Hein, with Witte de With as his flag captain, sailed out to capture the Spanish treasure fleet loaded with silver from their American colonies and the Philippines. With him was Admiral Hendrick Lonck and he was later joined by a squadron of Vice-Admiral Joost Banckert.
Part of the Spanish fleet in Venezuela had been warned because a Dutch cabin boy had lost his way on Blanquilla and was captured, betraying the plan, but the other half from Mexico continued its voyage, unaware of the threat.
Sixteen Spanish ships were intercepted; one galleon was taken after a surprise encounter during the night, nine smaller merchants were talked into a surrender; two small ships were taken at sea fleeing, four fleeing galleons were trapped on the Cuban coast in the Bay of Matanzas.
After some musket volleys from Dutch sloops their crews surrendered also and Hein captured 11,509,524 guilders of booty in gold, silver, and other expensive trade goods, as indigo and cochineal, without any bloodshed.
As a result, the money funded the Dutch army for eight months allowing it to capture the fortress 's-Hertogenbosch and the shareholders enjoyed a cash dividend of 50% for that year. He returned to the Netherlands in 1629, where he was hailed as a hero. Watching the crowds cheering him standing on the balcony of the town hall of Leyden he remarked to the burgomaster Now they praise me because I gained riches without the least danger.
Hein was the first to capture such a large part of a Spanish fleet from America.
"Lieutenant-Admiral"
He became, after a conflict with the WIC about policy and payment, Lieutenant-Admiral of Holland and West Frisia on 26 March 1629, and thus factual supreme commander of the confederate Dutch fleet, taking as flag captain Maarten Tromp.
Piet Hein crushed the spanish fleet sending the spanish back to there king saying we have been defeated by the Dutch... The spanish ships were built too heavy, and not strong enough we just rammed, and crushed them. The Dutch fought England,French, and defeated them both. Greatest admiral in the entire history of sea warfare.
The remains of New Amsterdam in the island of Manhattan, are the Marble Collegiate Church
(Dutch Reformed) Marble Collegiate Church is the oldest place of worship of the Collegiate Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of the City of New York, organized in 1628 under the Dutch West India Company when Peter Minuit was Governor of New Amsterdam. CONTINUED
The first minister was Jonas Michaelius, who appointed Peter Minuit as Elder and Bastiaen Jonaz Krol as Deacon. It is the oldest Protestant organization in North America with continuous service for 374 years.
The earliest organized services of the congregation were held in the loft over a gristmill on what is now South William Street. The first church building was erected in 1633 on what is now 33 Pearl Street.
In 1696, when New Amsterdam was under British rule and renamed New York, King William III granted the church a Royal Charter, which was confirmed in 1753 by the Legislature of the Colony of New York and continued in force by the Constitution of the State of New York. It is the oldest corporation in America.
Its denominational affiliation is with the Reformed Church in America, known in earlier days as the Dutch Reformed Church. The church has served under three flags: Dutch, British and American.
They are still Dutch street names in Manhattan, like Paerel Straet, Prince Straet, and etc. What angered me was the destruction of the Dutch Fort Amsterdam, by the declaration of independence.
Now they have a Native American museum when they should have put the Native American with the museum of Natural History, and rebuild our beautiful Dutch Fort Amsterdam as land mark!!!
The first governor of New Amsterdam, Peter Stuyvesant statue, and his burial site in St Marks Place Manhattan. Peter Stuyvesant was a mighty Governor, and defended the colony of New Amsterdam two times from the British. The third time the English send a letter of treat to Peter Stuyvesant, and he just ripped the letter in many pieces.
The people of New Amsterdam begged Peter Stuyvesant their governor to surrender the colony, and make peace with the English. Peter Stuyvesant never surrenderd in his whole life, and he did it for the people of New Amsterdam.
The English respect Peter Stuyvesant, and told him he could stay, but everyone else must leave. How ever I believe we could have won again, and we had amazing maritime in our Dutch Naval history. Thanks to Belgian, which was part of the Netherlands in 16th, and 17th century they helped build some of our Dutch ships, man of wars Ships of the lines. Most of our Dutch war ships were built in Rotterdam, like the Zeven Provincien, and the worlds largest seaport Amsterdam.

This phase coincided with the rise of the Dutch Republic as a major power and the founding of the Dutch colonial empire.

Piet Hein crushed the spanish fleet sending the spanish back to there king saying we have been defeated by the Dutch... The spanish ships were built too heavy, and not strong enough we just rammed, and crushed them. The Dutch fought England,French, and defeated them both.
