  • 2/2: This technology has the potential to create new business opportunities. Friends, sitting in a group, will now be able to share their pictures and videos without passing their cell phones around. They can simply project their videos on a flat surface for everyone to see. This is just one example of how this technology can be used.

  • 1/2: It is said that by 2014, all phones will have built in projector functionality. I believe that having embedded projectors in mobile phones is a great example of how humans develop technology to reflect human experience. In class professor talked about the physical limitations of humans to see a lot of data on a small screen.

  • I agree with you about 3D becoming the next step in digital screens. The first commercial 3D TV was released in 2008 and several movies as well as video games have already adapted to this innovation.

The 3D TV is still relatively new and hasn't fully been accepted yet. I believe this is because putting on the 3D glasses to watch TV isn't a "natural" act. If they find a way around this, I think their sales will shoot up.

  • Im Just going to provide this link as my comment as I posted extensively on this in your facebook group: facebook(dot)com(slash)groups(slash)witiger(slash)permalink(slash)215705885156627 - Marc N 415

  • I think that humans not only develop technologies to reflect the human experience, but also to enhance it. Things like infrared/thermal vision goggles for example were made to enhance our ability to see in different environments. I think technology will be developed to enhance our physical capabilities when we reach that point in technological advancement, and reflecting the human experience is just the starting point, with enhancing the human experience being the ultimate goal.

  • I think the reason why touch screen (well implemented) devices are popular right now is because we like to touch things and feel things and it is more like a human experience than scrolling through a mouse or a trackball. but at the same time i feel like all technology invented to reflect human experience is slowly replacing it.

  • 2/2: They can be used to view natural phenomena the normal human eye is not capable of seeing. This can include the action of popping a balloon with a needle and how a water droplet looks when hitting glass. Of which can be used as educational material to further learn about the sciences behind these everyday actions.

    Lisa L. MGD415

  • 1/2: I would like to mention that humans have also been developing technologies to reflect and present more than what the human vision is capable of seeing. Although this is not related to a new technology, an older technology example would be slow-motion cameras.

  • Not only will we be able to see things (physically, as we are already able to) but also we will be able to see beyond what meets the eyes. We will be able to see other information which we wouldn't have if not for the use of augmented reality. This is not only a really neat functionality that will most likely become ubiquitous to our new devices but also may provide a really profitable business opportunity!

    Danielle S. MGD 415

  • This is really interesting. I would also like to add, as mentioned in MGD 415 class earlier in the semester, that we are most definitely heading towards an augmented reality. This means that not only new upcoming technology mimics human experience but also enhances it. For example, with augmented reality it will be almost as if we could have access to the "metatags" of things we see in the world.

(continued in next post - by Danielle S. MGD 415)

  • I also want to add another point regarding to "Technology developments are based on the basics of how human observe and communicate" is that the concept of HD television, HD camera and HD Display are also came from the way human see the surrounding in a very fine details. Also because of this, technologies are constantly changing from 480 pixels to 720 and to 1080 and slowly emerging to 3D and soon to be real life 3D experience.

  • Also, Samsung’s concept of the Smart window is another example of developing technology to reflect human experience by replacing actual window with transparent display that is a fully functional touchscreen PC.

  • There are several mobile phones out in the market that have an autostereoscopic parallax barrier display, which allows users to see 3D display without glasses. The LG Optimus 3D and HTC EVO 3D are successful examples of mobile phones that have a 3D camera and 3D output via HDMI. However, the 3D images and videos are more like a diorama. Perhaps, in the near future mobile phones have the capability to show objects that can be flying in our faces, but without glasses.

  • 3D Technology brings the future of home entertainment. A number of the big Television channel companies are looking forward to this growing media explosion by creating 3D equipped channels and devices like a sky 1TB box to help improve the grade of 3D programmes enabling audiences to take pleasure from their most liked Television shows as though they’re viewing events happen in reality.

  • Augmented Reality. These applications allow the true human interaction. For example Axe company set up display "Fallen Angels " commercial in London, LiverPool station, This is brilliance. Also the Ar also allows Smartphone users scan pictures of margazine, can get the price of the product, where is can be purchase, delivery time and any other information possible.

Companies who are not technologically inclined would be soon left behind.

  • In today world where every one has a cell phone becomes hard for the company to sell it . though each time they come up with something new..now we have 3D TV and HTC 3D cellphone. The phones now have processors like BB 9900

  • I have the opportunity to play "KILL ZONE" in a 3D TV Sony was promoting a few months ago.I wanted to bring it up not only to show how companies are adapting more and more to the customer needs, but as how they seem to understand that a simple battle game may created a different perspective for the player just by adding a 3D experience. Now I would like to think that in a near future some one will integrate motion sensors and 3D capability making the absolute gaming experience. Kevin A ,BCS555

  • I attended a Marketing conference where Augmented Reality was discussed and how it is the next step in advertising and entertainment. AR is taking a picture or footage of real places and through computer processing, adding virtual objects or animations to the final product. An example of this is can be seen in the Nintendo 3DS that was released a few months ago. Besides including glasses-free 3D, it also includes cards which can be animated and interacted with after scanning.

  • It amazing how technology is always changing, like displaying 3D without the glasses. A few years back, people wouldn't think 3D could be watched on your own TV. Such a change in technology can happen instantly. But now its like nothing new. For example, when I heard about the Nintendo 3Ds coming out, i couldn't really imagine how 3D would look like on a portable gaming device without any glasses. Looking back then to now, technology has changed drastically.

  • Without a shadow of a doubt, 3D films are drawing people back to movie theaters and generating record breaking revenues. When we talk about 3D films, Avatar tops the list. The 3D effects used in Avatar were applied to both the animation of the Na'vi and the avatars, as well as non-animated humans that led to an interesting and artistic 3D viewing experience.

  • When 3D TVs frist became available in electronic retail stores in Canada last year, they ranged from around $1700 to over $2000. Prices have only slightly dropped since, but the market sector attracted many manufacturers of TVs to venture in. We, as consumers can expect a further drop in prices and as more of us adopt the techonology in our homes, the usual supply curve price vs.quantity will draw the not so distant future for us.

  • Seeing as the main purpose of technology is to change or develop human experience, it's only reasonable that we are seeing all these changes and remodifications in pre-existing technologies. Technology is changing our ways of doing things, recreational experiences of events, sometimes vicariously (i.e. watching viral videos) and humanity I think is the beneficiary of our own developments.

  • I agree with Prof Richardson in this video. One of the main purposes for the rapid development of technology is to figure out people’s problems and desire; then investigate at it in order to increase people’s quality of life. It explains why some technological ideas that cannot solve people's problem and satisfy people's desire will not be produced as a product while the ones that people want (e.g. 3D movie) is developing very fast.

  • More movies are becoming 3D now and soon we will have 3D television in our homes... however, I personally think that the 3D glasses are just annoying... perhaps if we had TVs built inside the goggles and see 3D images inside, that would be a better viewing experience. However, when I watch 3D movies, the glasses are annoying and almost uncomfortable to wear.

  • From black&white photographs to color moving pictures/audio to 3D imaging, it's interesting to see how technology has evolved and continues to do so. Humans are constantly coming up with technological developments to replicate the human experience. So far they've been able to replicate the sense of hearing as well as seeing in 3D, who knows maybe soon enough they'll be able to develop 3D movies/video games that replicate human experience through smell, touch, and taste as well.

  • With the recent launch of Nintendo 3D , it will change the gaming industry. As we know that videos games are appealing to a lot of the younger consumer market, hence introducing a 3D feature to a product that they use on regular basis will change the experience of it. Would video games sooner be 3D to compete with the current market of introducing 3D products, or would this phenomenon die or are consumers okay with the conventional ways of playing video games where 3D is only limited to movies

  • I find that it is ironic that I am watching this video now considering that the IT product my group has chosen to use for our CCT322 project are 3D TV's. After listening to the video & reading comments from previous years, the prediction was true, that with the future of technology we are always trying to recreate the human experience. 3D TV's do that, because in real-life we experience everything as 3 dimensional. With TV being in 3D it creates a familiar experience.

  • Samsung DLP Pico Projector Phone.

This is a great example of what Witiger is talking about. Cell phones are being built with the ability to project images and videos. You can now share your content to more than just a couple of people crowding around your phone. Today, cell phones can provide email, internet, videos, mp3, and pics. This increasing in a cellphone capabilities is being limited by a small screen. Imagine your Blackberry or iPhone with a 20 inch screen! How cool would that be!

  • Products to display 3D images without glasses, I am looking forward for this. Media rich content ...

    Great video sir,

    Johnny Paspalovski MRK 619

  • 3D tv will be cool but what about the content. Will advertisers spend the money to make 3D ads, or will it be a repeat of HDTV where the content was not and still isn't al in HD quality?

    KellyD MRK619

  • For now, 3D tvs wont be as big as 3D movies, most people wont see the value in purchasing a 3D tv now as there is not that much media available for it besides the 3D movies that come out in theatres, which a consumer would rather go see as it would only cost them a few dollars, and they get the full experience.

    Aaron Singh

    MRK619

  • A useful video, it describes the topic well, and in depth

  • While the advancement of 3d tech is a reflection of our attempts to replicate our real-world experience, I feel that the gimmicky aspect of 3D tech has not been overcome. A major English soccer match was broadcast with 3D tech a while back, but it reminded me of when Blu-ray and HD-DVD came out - sure, the image does look a bit better, a bit brighter, but was it worth it? A proper holographic interface may be where the gimmicky aspect is finally shed for a functional one.

    Etienne, MGD415

  • With that being said, be on the look out for many more 3D movies to be in theaters. I believe this is a trend that will soon spread (if it hasn't already) in a ploy to attract more people go out to the movies instead of buying the bootleg or streaming it online (who still rents??). Right now, the only way to add value to movie theater experience and compete with piracy is by making them 3D... That is until 3D TVs and monitors come out..

  • The idea of having 3D technology is something that has been around for a long time. It is now being utilized regularly now through movies such as Avatar & Alice & Wonderland. As a result, many corporations including some in Hollywood's film industry are realizing that people are no longer interested in the regular movie experiences. Instead they want something that cannot be achieved on a PC screen or their home TV set.

    Amir

    MGD415

  • Many people have started to substitute television, as a form of entertainment, with the Internet. Many watch TV shows on the Internet now, since they are commercial-free and can be watched at the users convenience. However, this is causing many TV manufacturers, such as Samsung and Sony, to worry about their future sales. Currently, society is hyped with the idea of 3D television and it might just be the push we need to revert back to watching TV instead of using alternatives.

    Pinaz

    MGD415

  • As a way to replicate the human experience through technology, since 3D TV's are in the development stages, it will only be a matter of time before consumers will be sitting in a theatre watching holographic movies, and no longer will there be the existence of TV's.

  • I do not think that it is a coincidence that films like Avatar are grossing record profits. Its clear 3D will succeed.

Posted on the CBC website there is an article about 3D TVs. There is a interesting point that 3D TV without the glasses may take longer than one would hope. This is because the technological environment is constrained. To view a 3D without glasses means you currently need to be in the "Sweet Spot".

    Clayton

    MGTC44

  • excellent point Clay - 3D is the future - duh, cause we see in 3D with our binocular vision

  • 3D television is not that far away, first wave of market ready "3D ready" HDTVS are due to arrive in summer of 2010 which will make 3d images when used with 3d glasses. This 'll also make most HDTVs today obsolete as they will not be "3D ready" as those kind of HDTV requires special display technologies.

  • yes, but, we still need some reason for ppl to convert

  • It interesting to consider that current capabilities of the internet are primitive and that there is much more to come. As the internet rapidly changes, it is daunting to try and even image what could be next, as it is difficult to keep up with the current pace of the internet.

    Julia Cosme (MDG415)

  • I totally agree and it's interesting to see how human has such a high ego-centric nature. As we know the Internet is still in it primitive stage that it's hard to forecast the real future of its power. However, the replication of human experience does give us some hindsight. The 3D aspect is widely seen especially in computer games - 3D video games, simulations, etc. Wii is another good example of the replication of human perception in technology.

    Jennifer Chiu (MGD415)

  • yes, we are highly ego-centric - hard to literally think about stuff that no one has thought of eh

    - thanks Jen

  • Using this reasoning you could also say that surround sound was created because as humans, we don't hear sound coming from a single direction we hear sounds coming from all around us!

    Kordey Clottey (MGD415)

  • hearing in stereo allows us to determine proximity and sound localization (says Massoud and (Mostofa in MGD415)
