  • why do all of Makoto Shinkai movies have pictures of electricity poles in them?

  • Monochrome ;)

  • @Lucariolamergamer Skybounded (the one who uploaded the video) didn't make it, Makoto Shinkai (an anime professional) did.

  • dareka tasukete :(

  • I love the facts that it's black and white to make it seem like it's really from the cat's perspective. something i didn't realize at first... as always his works are beautiful.

  • Sure the cat loved his owner, but he could at least tap Mimi's ass!

  • @1:22 , does anyone know what song is that in the background (or at least can make out the lyrics)?

  • @vittau I wondered rather if anyone knew the beautiful piano-piece at 3:09..

  • @XiomaraCarebear It's called "Crying" by Tenmon, but as far as I know it's just a 40 second piece composed especially for this video...

  • @vittau specifically*

  • @emcitement Troll harder, "especially" works just as well...

  • @vittau No. The words are used differently in english.

  • hmm .. everything is done in complete detail except for the cats.

    I love it.

  • Seems like the story of my life.

  • Damn.. here come the tears again.

  • The call is probably her boyfriend breaking up with her. But the circumstances are irrelevant. It delivers the emotions with no explanation needed.

  • Wait...I dont get it, what was the call?

  • @Noablarenglish The call can be anything. It could represent all sorts of bad things: the end of a relationship, a loss in the family, or something else. You can read into it whatever it is you want to feel. I think it's that kind of short, quiet movie.

  • @wolvekit The first thing that came in mind to me, was maybe her getting to know she suffered from a terminal disease. Like cancer or so. Really made me feel emotional right there! It was utmost beautiful, and as always in Shinkai's work: aimed at heart. :)

  • I also couldnt help but notice that Makoto Shinkai kind of connects his films in some way... for example, you actually meet Chobi [the cat] in 5 Centimeters Per Second [another one of his films] and they also mention Mimi :P i thought that was kinda cute

  • I SWEAR i couldnt stop crying cuz it was so emotional and adorable <3 i only just heard about Makoto Shinkai today and i already think his work is amazing (:

  • ;A; <- my face after watching this

  • @ryujis2121 True... It's puzzling, what next will he come up with?

Oh, and by the way, it Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko... Or maybe I didn't catch something?

  • what a creepy ass cat. i hope my cat doesnt think like this lol

  • wow, this was made in 1999...

  • as stupid as it may seem, even after looking at the title, the whole intro i thought it was a guy talking about living with a girl.. xD

  • wow. that was just.. wow

  • lol i did not expect the cat to look like like that

  • sometimes the subtitles went by to fast :( Overall a nice short, but left me hanging and wanting more.

  • The cat is so freaking cute...this movie (short?) makes me feel so incredibly nostalgic, I have no idea why!

  • The things the cat says is poetic, and that's why I like it. But it feels like it just leaves you hanging.

  • Each one of Makoto's work has elements of Beauty and Tragedy to them, combined with the beautifully detailed landscapes, is the reason I watch his movies.

  • Having viewed most of Makoto Shinkai's work, i have come to believe that, as a film-maker and an artist, his work reflects loneliness and despair, and the inevitability of the passage of time. Humans seem to delude themselves into thinking some things last for ever, and suffer anxiety when these things change.

This desire to hold onto people and feelings of the past is the cause of this loneliness. I think Shinkai's work carries the message that life goes on. and we should just accept it

  • i thought it was alittle too fast paced, but i suppose thats how it must feel when you ponder back in time and realize time went by so quickly...

  • that is so good. I want to hear more of the cat and his lover. its such a heart felt animation.

  • If there was a English dub I would love this even more, and don't go hating me for loving dubs :D

  • i think i get it somehow the meaning of this or at least i think, so can anyone give me their opinion about the message of the vidoe ???

  • haha, he said...her cat... hehe ^_^

  • lol i love Mimi

  • well actually i thought about it in a a bit different way. I thought that the cat represents the girl best friend. He is very close to her, but she values him only as a friend, thats why the cat is shown instead of a person. Also it shows the feelings only of a cat, but not the girl, this way you can understand that the girl do not feel anything like love for him, but he does. Also if you think this way its the traditional theme of his works. I dont know if this is the right thinking thought...

  • That was mesmerizing... maybe because I had to stare intently to finish reading the fleeting subtitles before the next sentence... but mesmerizing nonetheless!

  • Pure. Genius.

  • WHO PRESSED THE DISLIKE BUTTON?????

  • 25 people like MiMi too damn much

  • the drawings are beautiful....

  • very unique^^ what I really liked was it was told trough the eyes of a cat. It was really something a cat would 'think' about life. and also the black and white. cats can't see colors, only black and white, so taht made it even more litterly told trough the eyes of a cat^^

  • Really touching, I love how he described the seasons really well. Loved the sound effects, they made this mini-anime more interesting. I think my favorite thing about this was that it was black-and-white. It really suites this short anime. If it was in color, you'd think it was like a real anime... Makoto Shinkai is truly talented. Looking for more of his work!

  • 25 dislikes? obviously they're all dogs...cats are better

  • erm...okaaaay. quite good I guess but I think this kind of short movie isn't really for me.

  • Wow. Beautiful.

  • i had no idea wth was goin on but damn that was fine! : D

  • i really like this, i love the descriptions of the seasons and the smells. LOVE CATS

  • 25 people don't understand life.

  • interesting

  • This was a nice Anime short, I liked it. I'm starting to become a some-what fan of Makoto Shinkai. I just saw 5 centimeters Per Second, that was a really good one for me to want to watch more of his work.

  • I think it would be more touchy if the cat didn't have the fucking :3 :3 :3 face the entire time.

  • @CrispyGFX He's a cat... They look like that. Without that face he would've had to redesign the whole thing. If you didn't notice the cats were drawn very simply.

  • @CaelumN0ctis

I don't know if you have seen real cats lately, but they don't go :3 . I understand that it's simplistic, but it's the only expression the cat makes, regardless of situation.

  • i hate the subber

  • *who is most famous for his creation... "who" is used as a subject, "whom" as a direct object or object of a preposition.

  • I love this man's work, it's too bad though... my wife "doesn't get" his stories. Interesting though, since she's a little emotionally detached, and I'm not. I guess it all depends on the person.

  • cool

  • Cute :) her cat helped her to move on?? Or is just her loneliness was over with her cat??

  • I like this world too, no matter how flawed it is, thanks Makoto.

  • Whats that piano song?? :3

  • why is this sad??

  • shinkai is known in japan as the next miyazaki... I wonder wat would happen if miyazaki hired him for a movie both to mentor him and see what he knew. Would his skills just become godly?

  • Shinkai is a fucking legend.

  • everything shinkai makes is beautiful. he has the talent to create such a unique, deep feeling. it's undescribable.

  • this movie is so much better then all the american transformers-titans-....-crap. they are not even worth to be called in the same breath with this masterpiece.

  • I cant read that fast UGH :(

  • If you think this is great which im not sayin it aint, then you havent watched 5 Centimeters Per Second. They emotions that he makes you feel are absolutly undiscribable. you get a rush, and wether your a boy or a girl you cant help but cry. 5 Centimeters Per Second is by far his best work ever!

  • The cats Mimi and chobi also make an appreance in 5 centimeters per second. Another one of makoto shinkai's works.

  • Words can't express how beautiful this is...

    I cry everytime i see it. TT_TT

    And i love the soundtrack.

  • 1999?

  • the best work by shinkai imo.

  • I'm confused.. Did she kill herself or move?

  • @zorakbane She just left for work... Like DJMamu said, there's no crazy deep plot. It's just a cute Shinkai OVA.

  • i rented voices from a distant star, but my family (who doesnt like anime) said the effects where "cheesy" but i wanted to watch it!!!!!

  • I had to watch this again.

  • I want this to go deeper.

    Perfect.

  • Shinkai is a genius.

  • There's no crazy deep plot. It's just exactly as you see it. That's just how Shinkai is. People always try to put crazy meanings into his works. As someone else said they are simple and just slice of lifey. And he's one of the best at it.

  • does anyone know what program was this film made on?

  • amazing, such a range of emotions fit neatly into five minutes. shinkai truly is a master

  • wtf????????

  • great little story :'(

  • I think this was simply beautiful.

  • A very sweet, yet sad film. I liked it very much.

  • Japanese stories are not particularly concerned about plot. They have this art aesthetique for the ambiguous and the suggested. Stories are driven by images. It isn't the external events that matter, it's what is evoked. :)

  • the first time I watched this, i was so filled with emotion that i couldn't help but let one tear come to my eye.

  • very beautiful, but i still don't get it

  • I disagree with comment below. It just depicts life. The girl is just struggling. She doesn't live the cat either simply goes to work early. Shots and newspapers in the anime depict what her lifestyle is like. It's pretty straight forward

  • I think the girl had some sickness or somthing thats why after the phone conversation she said "someone save me"

and maybe she took the train to go to a hospital but in the end she didnt make it

    well...it only a guess o-o

  • The meaning is that the girl went to another city and left the cat all alone in her apartments...and wont ever come back ...

  • Unique and very sad. But I kinda don't get it.

  • *sigh*, if i remember how to cry, i will watch this again...it's beautifull :(

  • Could someone explain it to me?

  • After looking it up on the Internets, I found out that Mr. Shinkai is the same guy who directed 5 Centimeters Per Second. The animation and minimalist themes on life were all there and I would definitely recommend watching the film if you like this short piece.

  • sad and beautiful, just like life

  • I like the narration and the art, yet the storyline feels lacking.

Also it made absolutely no sense, but you know.

  • Shinkai's animes are (as others already mentioned) mainly supposed to let you feel certain, basically melancholic kind of feelings - stories are of minor importance in his animes.

  • Wooow! I'm utterly and completely fascinated by Shinkai's skill. He must know a lot about feelings.

  • This anime make ne cry т^т

  • That's totally adorable :3 It has absolutely no sense but in the same time the meaning of life. it explains everything. there's only one more short film that affected me this much and it's Till Nowak's 'Delivery'.

  • I have no idea why, but as soon as I finished watching this, tears started streaming down my face.

  • Perhaps the most profound 5 minutes of film ever!

  • Somehow my cat see me as her "slave" in which she expect me to fill her bowl with food and clean her litterbox. Then again I love cats and anime, and thus I happened to know about this little short.

  • it's charming

  • i agree it is the most beautiful anime iv seen

  • I know I commented on this not long ago, but I just have to say, again, that this is quite possibly the most beautiful five minutes I've spent in my life.

This is one reason I am so fascinated by Japanese culture: simple, gentle, beautiful art like this, that just lingers with you long after it ends.

  • Stunning.

  • so, I understand the meaning of this short anime, that the cat has not the ability to love the woman (for he is cat), but nor does he have the ability to love anyone else, so in the end he is inevitably lonely but content with being lonely because he is lonely with her and would rather give his love than give nothing at all. but I am not ignorant in this, but for some odd reason, this film does not strike me as profound. It seems to be a very average message with beautiful art.

  • Well, none of Shinkai's works are about the message, and are kind of slice-of-lifey. Rather, he's a master at creating an atmosphere and capture a certain feeling. If you have to watch Oshii films with your brain, Shinkai's works aim for the heart.

  • @Ausdoerrt I don't know who were you replying to, but could it be said his works are kind of like haiku? just longer and animated? ;)

this also the absolute first Shinkai's thing I've ever watched, any recommendations perhaps?

  • @wtfpantera That was half a year ago lol, look at the date.

As to your reply - yes for the shorts and no for the movies, they're a bit more complex I think. As for recommendations - I liked all of him except 5cm/sec, it felt a bit too simplistic and naive for me. As for other directors, I can't think of anyone with an exact same style in anime, but Shinkai seems to borrow a lot of "camera" techniques from classic film masters like Kurosawa and Tarkovskiy.

  • @Ausdoerrt did that comment lose any validity because of the time? I think not ;) thank you for the response :)

  • @Ausdoerrt The messages in Shinkai's work are implied instead of explicated. They are honest and subtle. It makes you appreciate the atmosphere that is created in the silent spaces of his scenes. This is animation at its finest.

  • @Ausdoerrt I would disagree... although most of Shinkai's works are certainly aimed at the heart, I think they are a lot more than the slice-of-life they originally seem like. Loneliness, distance, loss... he reflects all of these with purity and simplicity. I think one of his biggest themes is the passage of time, and how beautiful the little things are.

  • @Ausdoerrt can u tell me some of Oshii films and Shinkai's works plz XD i would really really want to see them

  • @brightheart607

Think of it this way, Its not like a love like humans have, The cat views his owner as a sort of Goddess or idol. Something for him to worship and stay faithful too. Think of it this way, If you rescued an animal, a dog for example, how do you think it would look at you? A lover or a savior? That's just my point of view anyway..Short films like these are great in the fact that they can be taken in many different ways. :)

  • @brightheart607 you have a point, but when do any of use stop to think about the most basic levels of interaction such as this? we try to and pretend to understand much more complex things about the world and the people in it but so few of us start by understanding themselves and those closest to them

  • wow! you explained it great ^^

  • I just watched 5cm, so I decided to check this out as well. This is so unique! :)

  • What I'm not getting is whether she left the cat behind or if she's just going to work, but other than that, it's the most beautiful and touching anime I've seen in a long time (besides other Shinkai works)

  • Amazing =)

I wonder when Shinkai's next work will be announced and/or released =).

  • ...*speechless*

WTF was that? a 5 minute stream of epicness.. like... what, how and when? :s

    Cutest 5 min ev4r!

  • i think i've never seen such an emotional and deep movie which is just 5 min long it's got everything, compressed in 5 min!!!!

  • omg, this is such a delicate and lonely film. I understand how the cat feels very well. I too am like that.

  • This is so unique. I think I haven't seen anything like that before

  • ...This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Less than five minutes of it, and I'm weeping like a baby.

Now my nose is all stuffed up. I can't sleep with my nose stuffed up. Damn it.

  • ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

  • REAL MEN DO ROMANCE!

  • Heal YEAH!

  • Seriously some of his shit is just too Godly to think one man was behind everything.

Fuck I bet his girlfriend is crazy for him.

  • You mean wife.

  • Well the cat may be as loyal as a husband but whatever.

  • Wow thanks for ruining that one asshole.

  • In Voices of a Distant Star, she survived. The manga continues a bit more and has more completion to it.

  • Mikako didn't die. WATCH the movie-sode and read the manga.

  • Did she leave forever?

  • No, but it's more complicated than that; as the cat says, he loves her like a man loves his lover, but she doesn't love him, so in the end, they're two lonely people (and cat) who might never actually find anyone for them, but they will always have each other and are therefore happy (Hence the "I love the world" at the end from both of them.

Keep in mind that this is what I understood; the "real" (As in what the author meant) might be completely different.

  • I love Shinkai's works, but I always break down crying while watching them, so I usually end up avoiding them after that, even though I also enjoy them. It's a very odd and moving style he has.

  • Voices of a Distant Star, Place Promised in our Early days, 5 Centimeters per Second

These are all MUST see xD

  • I agree. Ive seen all of them and own 'Place Promised in our Early days'

(Still getting around to buying Voices and 5cm)

  • not gonna lie, i shead a tear after this.

not really sure why, just struck that chord

  • This... is amazing....

    Made me cry.

Seen it a hundred times and it never loses it's impact. =3

  • I think this is stunning. Thank you.

  • I seen this so many times, but it never got old. i love it, but it makes me miss my cats.

  • you should try watching The Who Lept Through Time. that ones really good to, but really really different!

  • Do you mean "The girl who leapt through time?"^^

  • A lot of panning, and not much animation. Something all J animation in the past 15 years is guilty of, but this one particularly reminds me of Gainax's work.

  • This was made by ONE guy. Give him a break.

  • Technically, two guys. The composer is Tenmon, who has also written the soundtracks to the other three films. I wonder what the next setting will be.

  • Oh, yeah, I wouldn't forget Tenmon, but I was referring to the animation in my previous post.

And Shinkai could make a movie about frogs and it would still make me cry ;D

  • i don't get it -.-

so the cat loves her like a man loves a women?

and the women likes the world?

    someone explain? T__T

  • The cat loves her like a man loves a woman, yes.

But she will never love him.

In the end they are both lonely but will have each other.

  • Did she leave the cat on the train station at the end?!

  • i think so

  • No. They live happily together ever after.

  • Nope.

  • that... was.... beautiful....Im lost for words
