Me parece que no hay nada en el mundo que pueda superar la belleza de la voz de esta mujer, es el sonido mas maravilloso que oi, sinceramente, una delicia oirla, es realmente un placer! Te amo, Maria!
Wonderful voice. Singing live for public in theater and for recording are two different arts. She is brilliant live singer reaching every single individual with her energy.
Nobody liked Sutherland´s Norma in the beginings and now some of them say she was the best Norma, some other said that Caballé...and for me the best could be that soprano that make you believe that she is Norma...I don´t care who is the best.Just enjoy it or not. She could be maybe too loud, but anyway...if you enjoy it...
it might seem like she is loud at times, but it is the poor recording quality. very passionate, very intense, and of course very accurate coloraturas. I wish there were a real recording of this.
This is such deluxe sound, so precious so opulent yet this diva was impatient with development its full potential. She continues to abuse this instrument by singing so pooly, it breaks my heart. What a voice! What soul! What passion!
I am a fan of Maria Guleghina, but I agree that she is abusing her vocal gifts...one of the greatest in the world. Her critics should note that she has sung some of opera's most dramatic, taxing roles ever written, so of course the wear will show. That may not make them fans, but they may understand that hers is a great voice that has been pushed to the limit. I hope Guleghina hasn't stopped training altogether...no artist should ever stop training...I love her voice very much.
Im sorry Maria for Guleghina but this isn´t good. Too loud and many times flat. Sorry cause I don´t enjoy saying things like that. Her voice sounds good in other roles and have to say it is beautiful when she doesn´t scream. Sorry.. but it is the truth.
1:38 and 4:39 would deny her acceptance in the soprano section of an amateur choral society. This could be tolerable in the provinces but the notion that we are being asked to listen to this in theaters that used to have standards is deeply offensive. The agility is pretty eerie as well, and not in a good way. UGH! Don't sing what you can't sing!
Perhaps you are right, but have you listened Maria in Tosca or in Manon Lescaut? You'll change your opinion. Yet, only june Anderson is, for me, really great in Norma.
Well, she's loud. But this is Norma, and all the throat gulping in this performance merely evinces the labored nature of its delivery. She's often flat, the pianissimi are right at the glottis, and intonation consistently suspect, top to bottom. Of no fault of Ms. Guleghina is preposterous presentation. She appears to be a garlanded Maria Ouspenskaya howling under a full moon. It's The Werewolf meets The Empire Strikes Back.
Maria is the best soprano in the world - bar none! Much like Pavarotti's her voice is all-encompassing and limitless. She's a great actress and a true artist - no performance is "too small" and she always gives it her all.
Singers need to take back the Art of the Diva Fit. No diva worth her salt would have walked on stage with that crap on her head in the Good Olde Days.
LOL!!! Oh My God!!! You made me laugh so hard. I agree with you 100%, but the way you worded it was priceless. Thanks for the great laugh. I give you the Bravo in this video. Maria is too loud.
Her voice is so large and luscious, but i'll be scared to hear the following cabaletta or any piece with semiquavers. Seems to me that she lacks the coloratura necessary for any bel canto. I will get a ticket for La Papian's show.
I saw her last week at the Met playing Lady Macbeth. It was interesting to hear her big but lyric soprano. She sang calante most of the performance, fleeing the high C but amazingly blasting a final high Db in the concertato of act I. A beautiful instrument that she shouldn't push to sound spinto or drammatico.
what a sad state of things; poor Gulegina; such a great rich voice but so wrong for this. How come there isn't a conductor or coach who help her with that awful singing flat situation. She also doesn't use the chest voice a lot which I know would her her vocalism. you need the foundation for dramatic singing.
I have heard Guleghina and Papian on the stage. I just don't think Guleghina can do Norma. Hasmik Papian, you are beatiful, your voice is beatiful. I just want to see more your videos.
I have heard Guleghina perform many years ago, but in this particular role , I think Papian is much better. I think JBL 228 is very lucky to be seeing these divas perform in the near future.
ok ... pardon me... but ... oh hell no...hahah Norma is far too long an opera and I don't think that I could listen to this singer for more than three flat phrases...
I'm a big fan of Guleghina, but she's definitely not a natural fit for Norma. She's not a bel cantist at all, and this is one role that needs to be sung by a straight bel canto singer. Her voice is a bit unruly for the role. That said, it is a strangely compelling rendition of the aria...where was this production staged? I'm planning to see both Guleghina and Papian at the Met next season, and also planning to see Guleghina as Lady Macbeth.
At one point, I feel, she would have been ideal for Norma...a dramatic yet flexible voice. But so many factors have made my opinion questionable. I admire this singer greatly, I can't stand it when she seems to disregard poor singing in favor of vocal power (which she still possesses).

I think she is actually changing the vocal line and not going for the top note! Know what I'm talking about?

The production is hideous, I've seen better costumes and props at my community college Opera Workshop shows.

I saw Papian's Norma this past Mon.11/19. Although hers isn't a dramatic tone she's got a beautiful full lyric and she was a goddess on stage.

Bel canto? Not exactly. Some of those A's sound suspiciously like G's ...

I wonder what her voice would sound like singing Turandot? It's not a bad voice, but I really don't think it's right for Norma.
