The timing and accents need to be pushed further. Also the exposure of the drawings has a great deal to do with the illusion of fluidity in the animation. A combination of differing exposure rates and different spacing would have strengthen the animation.
It was a great idea, and a great work all the same. It's just that a better understanding of these principals would have helped it more closely match the animation style they were honoring.
they've done a pretty good job of the old Fleischer style, but the movement isn't flud enough, in a real Fleischer cartoon everything seems like its always moving, here you get the characters frozen, like in the car at the start.
It was an attempt, but not really the Fleischer Style in terms of drawing and animation. The Hotel Manager was skillfully done. The animation of the boy and girl was not as skillfull. The timing is too even and a bit awkward such as the walks. The boy and girl have largely frozen facial expressions all through the piece. There were several opportunities for blinks with "Antics" into takes to give them a little more reaction. This was an element used in those days.
Yeah, it sounds Jewish because this song is composed in the style of Klezmer music, which, incidentally, was used as the background music for a lot of the early cartoons.
The opening sequence, before the animation begins, includes all the members of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Animators for The Simpsons TV show created the video, which won an award at the Toronto Film Festival. Despite many requests and petitions from passionate SNZ films, VH-1 refused to include the video in its lineup.
i believe that that is cab calloway there in the white tux and tail, and this is an old betty boop cartoon. some of those old cartoons are really f'ed up.
Haha. Man, I worked on this thing, we referenced so many Betty Boop cartoons to get it right. I never wanted to hear this song again, but now that a few years have passed it's cool to see it again.
You made a nice tribute, and it was a lot of work. If you do any more animation in this style, I hope my appraisals will help you in your next project.
I retired from animation, as did many of my friends, not too long after this was finished. Too many traditional animation opportunities had dried up, sadly. When we made this, it was a tiny side project a lot of people contributed to (nearly every scene went to a different local animator). Also, it wasn't just animators from the Simpsons who worked on this, though the directors of it did. There were also folks from Cartoon Network, Spumco and a few other studios who pitched in.
As I stated, it looked as though a team had been working on it. Again I applaud your efforts. In all due respect, it needed the supervision of a more experienced director familiar with the style you were trying to emulate.
You say you "retired" from animation. I was pushed out for being professional mature and proficient.
Again, I applaud your efforts. Frankly, I wish I could have been involved since I believe i have some insight on the subject as I've already indicated.
@Dullscythe Well, anyway this is a great video, very well done no matter these "defects" that are mentioned here. I find myself going back from time to time to watch it. I love especially the sequence where they are falling on the stairs/slide...reminds me of the cartoon "Bimbo´s initiation"...crazy stuff! Congratulations.

This is an imitation of Cab Calloway in MINNIE THE MOOCHER (1932). This is not that cartoon, but a send up based on it.

Dullscythe -- amazing job! The work that went into this must have been painstaking. Really nailed the prewar/20s animation look.

@RayPointer Thanks for your comments, it was really a labor of love. I think we'd do a much more accurate job if we got the chance to do it again!

@RayPointer In case you'd like to see it, I've put up a higher quality version of the video. Thanks again!

@Dullscythe You worked on this? Did we ever give you a copy of it? Send me a private message, maybe I can mail you one!

I was thinking just that, theres no way this could possibly be classic, its too perfectly set up, synched and the music is too modern :P
