  • Damon Lindelof speaking!

    YEEEEYY!!!!!

  • god. this is worse than i thought it was.

  • Later I'd like to be scriptwriter but it seems so hard to do it. I live in France and here it is as hard as in the USA or more...

I think I have to be brave...

  • I look forward to DGA and SAG giving the AMPTP a very difficult time...It is time to pay for what you sell and claim to make no money....we are not stupid people in this business....AMPTP makes loads of money, they drive their Lexus to pick up their Ferrari's!

  • I look forward to DGA and SAG giving the AMPTP a very difficult time...It is time to pay for what you sell and claim to make no money....we are not stupid people in this business....AMPTP makes loads of money, they drive their Lexus to pick up their Ferrari's!

  • The AMPTP came to Canada too& wanted the Actors here to work for next to nothing! There motto, A days work for a days pay, they don't care if they shot two episodes that day & put them on the internet...they don't want to pay for residuals! Go WGA!

  • I am a Canadian actor and I totally support the WGA strike!

I sat in the room with the AMPTP to fight for CDN actors over a very long year, they don't negotiate they bully and claim they are making no money?! Off of all of our backs AMPTP! Go WGA!!!Stop the BULLIES!

  • I want to thank the wga for posting this video about the writers. It certainly has been an eye opener who make constant sacrifices in order to practice their craft. I write but I knew I could not rely on this to pay my bills so I received training in another area. The entertainment industry isnt the only industry that is greedy. One can see it in other industries. Case in point the healthcare industry, Insurance industry.

  • Disregard the voices of ignorance. There are actually people who know nothing of the value of doing what you love (writing) and/or having what you love (family/kids). Michael Tabb and others, we support you. The WGA will get through this!

  • Thank you FlyingMonkey, for having the courage to voice an opinion contrary to the majority; you're not being ignorant just because you disagree. This video could be making a perfectly valid point if it wasn't so packed with emotional blackmail. Shots of injured feet? Mournful music? And yes, I understand what "the fight is for". I also understand that this video is misleading, especially to me, as an aspiring writer and supporter of direct action. Please continue the fight without pomposity.

  • FlyingMonkey is being ignorant in his/her comment. You're supposed to be an aspiring writer? Reread it and figure where he was being ignorant.

  • You miss my point; we fundamentally disagree on how we define ignorance.

But, as is usual with YouTube, those who disagree with the majority, or the values being expressed by a video, are pressganged into thinking they're wrong by a vocal minority. Wouldn't be surprised if I saw a few -1s on my comment! Please, feel free.

Of course, the strike's over now, and I just hope you folk continue to support these people, as the deal is tenuous at best.

  • Obviously we do. But in all technicality, there is only but on definition of "ignorant" and he was, infact, ignorant.

I don't care about the -'s or +'s that everyone likes to hand out. If I have enough of a "disliking" or "appreciation" for someones comment, I'll actually reply to them.

  • Hes right actually lol. He shouldn't of had three kids if he couldn't afford to have them.

He wasn't ignorant, he was being cras. Ignorance is an indication of being poorly educated, his comment was not.

He's also right about the job thing, I mean if he's not earning enough in writing to support his family he should supplement his income in another way. Sometimes dreams don't work out, and perhaps he should accept that.

  • First of all, most people who have children can't and won't ever be able to afford them. Second, I think what was said was that he had a well paying job, then got into writing. Then from there when it wasn't good he wrote again joined the guild then hit trouble till this strike.

He was definitely ignorant. He's lacking knowledge of a subject. Subject being a writer.

How do you know that he doesn't have a side job to get through? And who are you to tell someone to give up on their dream?

  • I'm saying that his family shouldn't have to suffer for him following his career, do you think its good for them to have to leave California and then come back all of a sudden because he's found a job?

  • The music is amazing. It reminds me of the soundtrack for Firefly. Do you have any other work available online cjt?

  • THESE are the videos that need to be publicized. Put THIS on the united hollywood site.

  • Although I totally support the WGA and this strike, this video just made me SERIOUSLY reconsider my aspirations to be a screenwriter. Could you, by any chance, make a video exploring the GOOD side of being a writer? I could use it right about now.

  • Wonderfully powerful video. Stay strong. The WGA will win this!!

  • THAT is the true reason and reality of the Writers Strike! Don't ever give up; we are all behind you 100% of the way!

  • Stay strong! We support you!

  • Keep it up. don't back down

  • Stand Strong! Keep going! You've got our suport!

  • As a balloon artist trying to survive with a dream I'm here to support you guys. Keep it up!

  • This "hobby" as you call it is the main reason this trillion dollar industry exists.

Some people called writers work so that the State of California remains the richest place in the world.

Without writers the whole industry and the industry that's built around it goes kaput.

  • Theres nothing wrong with fighting for your dream even if at the moment it isn't very successful. If you don't fight for it, it will never be successful. It's ridiculous trying to call their career a hobby. A lot of these men and women have created masterpieces. Give them a break, anyone of use would be doing the same thing if we've been taken advantage of by big corporations.

  • Do you even understand what the fight is for? The way you speak makes it sound like you have NO idea. Maybe you should get a clue before you start spouting off?

  • Sounds to me like many of them already have to. Now tell me, what of the CEOs of these companies? Are their jobs somehow more legitimate? The way you talk, anyone's job can be called "a hobby." "Oh hey, you work as a dishwasher? Well my uncle shovels shit! Grow up."

  • And that's what they want, to be able to pay their bills with their job. It takes a lot of work from many people, including writers, to make the entertainment I would guess even you enjoy. He's not asking for "stardom," he's asking for what he deserves. There is money being made off of their work and they deserve a fair cut. In addition, most writers do have other jobs to support them. Your judgement is even more galling given that the producers seem to be just fine in your view.

  • You fail to see that their job happens to be their dream. Just because it happens to be in the entertainment field doesn't mean it should be considered a pipe dream. What if my dream was to be a nurse? Or school teacher? If I have to be put to protesting so I can better my career, then so be it. My dream job isn't paying the bills, but why shouldn't I fight. It's my JOB. I'm just fantastically lucky that my job ended up being my dream job. Something I loved doing.

  • Also, what kind of coward are you... sticking your tail between your legs and running off when times get tough. You have to stand up for your rights and fight for what you are worth. I'm sure none of these people left their family high and dry. Their families more than likely backed them 100%

  • you have to understand that a lot of people who choose a career like this start at the begining a young, single, talented person with a dream

like the guy in the vid:he started out by breaking in, writing and getting produced.then he has a family, but then the money dries up because the contract is so unfair.he did the right thing by himself and his family and was talented enough to be produced.its the way the writers are treated which makes it seem like he was putting his dream before his kids

  • Wow, I'm almost in tears...... that was a real eye opener!

  • The music is a bit much.

  • The music was brilliant, written specifically for this video, qued right on target. What would you have written?

  • Thanks for the kind words, bluevision.

    Peace,

    cjt

  • im from australia and i didnt even know that the writers strike was such a big thing, here i was complaining that every week the latest shows werent coming out (mind you.. i download straight offline) i feel terrible that you writers dont get the money and credit you deserve!

  • What a great, touching documentary on the WRITERS' STRIKE. I know lots of writers, and this is exactly what it is like to be a writer in Hollywood. It is as tough and thankless as being an actress. Very few people realize how poor we artists are and how much we sacrifice to live our dream of making movies/TV to entertain. This documentary will open a lot of eyes.

  • As an actress, I know how hard it is to make a living when your skills happen to be either acting or whatever job you can get. When you have some success, you expect some level of security (especially after putting such time and effort into your career). All they are asking is a renegotiation, redefinition of the new media. I watch online a lot. I had no idea the writers were not getting a share of those profits. They have every right to expect a return on their creative property.

  • IF and when the studios are making a profit off digital broadcasts, including internet broadcasts the profits should be shared fairly. But I don't want to see more ads just so the rich upper tier can live even better than they already do, and when the studios finally reach a deal, more ads will probably be the result.

  • As a person who is wondering what will happen to network giants such as LOST, and Greys Anatomy, it was really and eye opener watching this footage, and its nice to finally be educated on what the WGA is actually fighting for. For us who live in smaller towns where the exposure to higher class is minimal, its nice to see the middle man just like us fighting for fair justice.

  • Why do you have a problem with people wanting to pursue their long life dreams? If they worked hard to get there, don't they have a right to protect it from those who want to take that away from them?

  • Don't bother posting a negative comment, the manipulation here goes beyond the movie.

  • Loved the reference to the early WGA efforts in the 60s that set the basics for the guild. I remember as a kid in the 70s being horrified when there would be reports of actors and writers who worked on iconic shows in the 50s who died penniless even though their work was still in heavy syndication. Residuals for ongoing revenue is not unreasonable.

  • Wow, you don't understand the influence even a single union has on an industry. When one guild takes a stand and looses substantial money for a strike the corporation has to take notice. Instead of roll backs, wages and benefits are increased. Then the other companies have to increase wages and benefits to be competative. They give the same increases to other employees within the company to be fair. In other words, everyone in the industry benefits in the long run.

  • Go Go Go WGA!!! Hope you'll get what you deserve...

  • wow this was an insight on how this really effects some of the writers, i really hope that they get what they deserve and hope this ends before xmas

  • GO WGA! If they don't do anyng bring in te Feds to open the books. Watch "them" change their tune.

  • For the strikers: <3

Don't give up, asking for 18 cents on a DVD purchase is not ridiculous.

  • To the strikers: I have hope. Keep believing in what you are doing.

From the young people they say they are the future, but I say the writers have, the future.

  • excellent. this is a huge production leap from the first strike videos. Peter Hyoguchi has got it going on!

  • That was an awesome video!! I'm glad we're seeing the other side of hollywood. The part you don't read about in Script Magazine.

  • End the picket lines of the WGA before Christmas Eve/Christmas Day, PUH-LEEZE???

  • Its not just in Hollywood, it's the "Giant Corporate Conglomerate". It is a sad fact for working Americans today. People in Right To Work states really suffer poor treatment and lack of benefits and the law protects big business allowing them to treat employees thus. Maybe what is happening in Hollywood will finally open America's eyes. The rich get richer and the poor work harder.

  • this is so sad:///

  • Yeah...Mike Tabb's story made me want to cry. I still want to be in the biz, though. Anybody who thinks these guys are spoiled brats should shut the fuck up and watch this film. Sad and brilliant.

  • My boyfriend is in school right now for his MFA in Screenwriting, so thank you for fighting so diligently for the rights of future writers.

    Good luck!

  • I wasn't aware of the age discrimination issue. A writers life ends at 40. God Hollywood is horrible.

  • This video sorta breaks my heart. In these videos the writers keep defending their career choice, which leads me to believe a group of people have decided that's a valid argument. It makes me sick that these writers have to defend being happy in their carer choice. It's astonishing really that anyone would challenge them with such a weak and offensive argument. GOOD LUCK! Hope the meeting goes well today.

  • Don't give up!!! We the fans are behind you 100%. You inspire me to be better, every time I watch a good movie or TV show...you inspire me to be a better person.

  • I also fully support what you are doing!! I don't understand how anyone can argue that you don't deserve this... FIght hard, but come back soon!! I also need Lost....

  • Wendy Mericle: I was a huge fan of Everwood!

Writers, keep fighting the good fight. (I think a writer from the show Angel wrote that).

  • first! :) i really want this thing to end. I need Lost. But i hope u guys get what u want even it means a delay in the shows! this was also touching. :( wow.

    i fully support
