an airliner is pressurised to 8,000ft. if the a plane suddenly loses cabin pressure, the pilots can descend to an altitude with breathable air in a matter of minutes.
Depends on the situation... theoretically if you're long enough up there... yeah you would suffocate... In most cases... especially if it's not a rapid decompression... you'd decend to a safe altitute before anything bad were to happen.
And there is oxygen in the air even in the cruising altitudes or commercial airliners, just not enough, so your not suffocating as fast as if you couldn't breathe at all.
my question is, what are the chances of using an oxygen mask not if the plane is gonna crash but just has a slight decompression? I mean, like the chances of using plane oxygen masks are rare but how often can it occur?
The mask didn't seem to deploy very well. I always thought they dropped down a considerable distance and that they would be much easier to pull to begin oxygen flow. If we have to start digging through plastic piping while fighting off asphyxiation to get our masks, we're in a boat load of trouble!
Thats plenty of time to descent to a breathable altitude... that's the only reason the aircraft is equipped with them. To keep people alive long enough to make the descent from current altitude to lower than 10,000 ft.
@eddieeddieeddie13 I think that it might be the standard air that we breathe: 77% Nitrogen, 20% Oxygen, the remaining 3% is a mixture of other gases like nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide.
Hey, that's totally awesome. The fact the oxygen mask actually inflates is like icing on the cake. :) Now, if the lights turned to bright when the mask dropped, and a pre-recorded announcement telling people to use the masks started, and the screams of some nervous pax, it would be UBER-realistic! ;)Great job.
The lights brighten when those things drop? I know about the announcement thing, but I never once questioned the lights. And by the looks of it, the bad infalted because he was pinching the bottom so no air would go out.
Yeah, on certain aircraft, the light immediately turn on to bright...probably so everyone can see the masks. :) That, and also the pre-recorded announcement (if installed) telling people to put their mask on!
its F***ING noisy!

What happens if an oxygen mask doesn't fall from the top, would you half to die or will there be a other option?.

so will you sell me one of them masks then?
fireisgreat 4 years ago
You know why they do that? Pure oxygen makes you high and relaxed. Therefore, you'll except the fact that you're probably gonna die.
eddieeddieeddie13 4 years ago
Ummm no, emergency oxygen on a passenger aircraft is not 100% oxygen, but a light mixture of the cabin air and some added oxygen.
ajperron 4 years ago
Oh, that's good.
eddieeddieeddie13 4 years ago
Just enough to keep you alive long enough to descend.
ajperron 4 years ago
Yeah, 10 minutes.
eddieeddieeddie13 4 years ago
At a rate of flow just enough to maintain life, in some cases not even enough to keep you fully concious.

some flight sim people like me might want to build a cabin sim along with their flight sim cockpits.

The bag is a reservoir which captures the oxygen so that it can be breathed. It's meant to inflate like that.
