To avoid war I think Ukraine should negotiate a handing back of Sevastapol and the Russian part of the Crimea.

Instead of simply looking, there should be more active role of EU and West as a whole in response to Russian aggression. BTW, WWII started because western countries were too afraid to stop Hitler and help Poland in time when they had occasion to do so.
