  • Someone release a tutorial :(((((

  • great job!

  • @Koootzer learn to spell before you criticize anyone

  • Rafael Nadal covers Alex Lifeson wooo!

  • firstly, great song to cover, secondly you play it very very well, bravo sir bravo

  • Comment removed

  • This is undoubtedly the best cover of this song around. Not only that but the different key provides a different sound which makes this just as listenable as the real thing.

    Great Great Job!!!!

  • Is this song difficult to learn?

  • this much to fast.. it destroys the athmosphere.

try to work with accents and dont play everything LOUDLOUDLOUD.

in spite of that you played it pretty good and without any mistakes. you've got potencial.

  • i love this :D

  • When I kept breaking the G string I just put a B string where the G is supposed to be and tuned it to an A. It worked great because it is just as tight as the B string when it is tuned down to and A when you're in DADAAD tuning so it doesn't break like the G does.

  • Amazing rendition. I'll give it a go, but if I can do it half as well as you did here I'll be happy. Any chance of a Broon's Bane? :P

  • Brilliant. Well done mate, don't listen 2 ppl who give harsh criticism. They shud appreciate that ur playin music that u obviously love. Nice one dude.

  • Oh, just one thing- in the album version, he quiets down a bit just before the repeat-he quiets right at the 555, 554 frets part, quiet through the 202, 404, 000, 202 and he comes back into the beginning with, say, mezzo forte intensity. The contrast is a key point of his version of his song. But you probably noticed this anyway. =)

  • You play this really well, and I've spent a few hours so far reading the UG tab and watching you play it so I can learn to play it myself.

If you all want to stop snapping your g, you can tune your 6-string to CGCGGC if your strings are heavy enough so that they're not rattling on the fretboard obnoxiously. I did this on my roomie's guitar, and it sounds good =)

    Excellent work.

  • I'm currently trying to learn this song on the piano. =]

Your cover is pretty impressive, though. I love it.

  • Thank you! A piano version! Now that's something I'd love to hear!

  • Me too! Unfortunately, I don't have the skill to play it, and I can't understand guitar tabs, so I have to learn it by ear.

So for now I'm trying to learn The Weapon, which is a much simpler song, and nice too.

I'm trying to keep going the trend of learning music by ear. I can barely read musical score anyway.

  • @rootwitch This is great! It is a little fast, but I like it!! Keep it up! :)

  • You're right. You play it way better. :P

  • And when did I say I was trying to be like Alex? And where is your video playing it better? Tell ya what, you don't like it, don't watch it. I think there's probably a couple YouTube videos out there that might entertain you more.

  • Yea it's a faster rendition,, but its still a good rendition..

    That's why - it's called art..

  • andrewrush, we're all just so impressed with your scathing critiques of Michael and definitely with your spectacular misuse of "your" and "to" in this single brief statement. You also don't understand commas. Next time, try "You're" and "too" and put a comma just before "dude".....dude.

  • i'm going to go learn this. Rush is my religion. I need to play this. if i had the option i'd give you more than five stars.

  • awesome.

  • 5 stars.

  • I got my tab from ultimate-guitar, I'm pretty sure it's yours. Brilliant job! I tune the same as you because my strings like to snap, but I capo the first fret so it's really his tuning. Still sounds pretty nice, though I like it more when open.

  • Yup, that's mine. The capo's a good idea. I'll have to try that.

  • Still sounds awfully good almost one year later!

  • VERY COOL!!! love your performance!!

  • You were one of the first up, and this is still the best cover of this song out there. You got talent, brother.

  • Dude i keep comming back to watch this vid. Cuz its totally inspiring & kix azz! Great job! I even went out & bought a cheapo Mitchell 12 sting acoustic 199.00! To learn it on 12 string! I play it on my Yamaha 6 string elec/acoustic, but its just not the same! lol! Thanx for posting this! Really!

You really need to post some more vids! Wuwt?

  • Thanks for all the kind words everybody. I'm glad you enjoy it so much. Sorry I haven't been responding much lately. I'm actually planning (finally) to post a couple more vids of some Michael Hedges covers. Hopefully this weekend. I agree, this song really needs the 12 string.

  • would u ever think of making a video explaining how to play this???? (i still have trouble tuning to a Drop C or C#. i keep snapping my strings! =(

  • i hear you have a power-tab of this. could you email me it? im emailing you now

  • i still cant play this ='( lol

  • im learning this song right now. i love it thanks for the info on the tab, keep on rocking!

  • YOu inspire me man, you really do..Where can I get the tabs?

  • Ultimate guitar

  • I don't understand what you mean by C#... the g string?

  • What I mean is that instead of tuning DADAAD like Alex does, I tune C#G#C#G#G#C#, half a tone down from Alex's version. :)

  • Ahh, that makes sense. Sweet, so I might not break my G yay lol

  • How can I get to that tuning without using a tuner? Cause I don't have a tuner. All I can tune to (by ear of course) is drop d, whole step down, drop c(CGCFAD).

  • Yeah I went thru 3 G strings before I decided to just drop it. Best way to tune it is play a 12th fret harmonic on the E low string and finger the C# on the 5th string til they're in tune. Then just go from there.

  • Am I tuning up to the harmonic or is it going down. I can't tell the sounds apart.

  • U Nailed it mate - spot on - give the lad a hand!

  • best cover of this song on youtube. very nicely done.

  • It sounds really great dude. Awesome job on an awesome song.

  • Didn't Alex Lifeson use something like this tuning wise on the 'strip and go naked' into from his Victor CD?

  • Nicely done! Gives "Hope" for other 43 year olds that play - like myself...

  • amazing!!! send tabs?

  • wow ur good

  • This is an outstanding example of someone keeping time & playing like a dummer, with motion. Well done.

For you guitarists out there that may see the vid this is how it's done, keep time, and feel the music. And apply it to music not just solo.

    Wow!

  • Excellent - well done sir !!

  • O.K. dude that rendition/playing of Hope by Rush is awesome. Dude you got talent! Amazing!

  • What a great song! Very very nice job...I don't even play guitar and it gave me goose bumps.

  • Niiice! Great song, nicely done. I tune down to C, but your C# might sound a little better. Meh, no matter. Good job!

  • Whoa......It sounds just like the album. Nice work dude!!! Its perfect

  • Excellent! :)

  • Very nicely done, man. It was interesting to hear that one a half step lower. I myself use the open D5 tuning (DADDAD) and the sound is just the same (plus I don't have to worry about putting too much tension on the G string). ;) Rawk on!

  • Same here. DADDAD all the way for me. Crosby, Stills, and Nash tended to use D5 tuning alot too.

  • Very nice job!

  • Beautiful job, this is my fav song off their new album and I just saw rush live...this is an amazing song...great job!

  • Bro, you played the shit out of that guitar. Xcellent job bro! Nice GUP shirt. RUSH!

  • I usually really hate seeing people post videos of themselves doing covers just sitting there, But that was really awesome. Its a beautiful song and its nice to see someone do it justice, especially doing it by ear. Keep on rockin' in the free world!

  • Yay Neil Young ! :D

  • Awesome stuff man.. My only complaint is that it seemed like you rushed it a bit. But hell, I can't play guitar for ***.

  • beautiful dude very nicely done. I've been playing for about 2 years and have an awful long way to go. Thanks for the inspiration.

P.S. Going to see Rush in about 3 weeks ... cant wait !!!!!

  • Hey, great job man! Two questions though, which brand and model 12 string is that, and how long have you been playing? Again, great job, I'm trying to learn off your tab as we speak.

  • Phil, I've been playing about 22 years. The guitar is a Yamaha FG-420 that's at least 10 years old now. I think I only paid 200-250 for it at the time.

  • Thanks for the tab man - its not as hard as it sounds on Snakes and arrows, but still well done for workin it out

  • Dude where did you find that tab? Or are you just awesome and you did it yourself...

    Very nice...very nice indeed...

  • I guess I'm awesome cause I figured it out by ear. LOL I did post the tab at ultimate-guitar though. Thanks!

  • beautiful, play man, just play........

  • Wow. I would love to be able to play that. So moving. Great Cover!

  • Even better than the real thing! Well done!

  • My god that is AMAZING!

  • EXCELLENT JOB MY GOOD MAN!

  • you got tabs man, like a site or anythign you got it off, i been looking everywhere lol

  • I posted the tab at ultimate-guitar :D

  • Mr. Patrizi would be proud!

  • ROFL! Yeah.....Riiiiiiiiiiight! You got a problem Robbins? I got no problem! You're GONNA have problems!

  • Man, that was almost spot on! Simply an outstanding job!!!

  • Almost Spot on? what was wrong with it? besides bein a little short it was perfect

  • WOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I've seen RUSH 7 times so far this tour and this is beautiful!!! GREAT job, Alex would be proud!!!

  • not sure if anyone's said this but the problem of breaking strings but staying in key could be remedied by tuning to C#'s and G#'s and using a capo on the first fret.

  • This is really AMAZING. So accurate and smooth...

I would like to ask if u can share the tabs....That'll b really great. I love this song a lot....my email is wolfganglittle(at)hotmail(dot)com. Thanks very much for sharing this great piece.

  • Alex himself would be proud of a performance like that, well done.

  • simply put...fuckin beautiful..awesome guitar playing skills

  • wow. I'm speechless. thats insanely amazing its jsut wow. thats it...wow, godly

  • Grace, Elegance & Intensity.......... Ferociousely played. Very well done. Thanks for sharing.

  • is 12 string as hard to play as 6 string?

  • If 6 string is hard to play, then yeah 12 string is harder. You'll definitely build up some quality calluses playing 12 string. Without a doubt, 12 string is the most tedious intrument to tune. And restringing one....gads! Lol

  • Absolutely beautiful job! I've been dying to learn how to play this song, but to no avail. Thanks for sharing this with us!

  • ha. if you have trouble with G-strings snapping use B-stings instead. cause the B and G strings are both tuned to A's anyway.

  • I'm a massive Rush fan and a guitar player but that is brilliant.Well done...very impressed !!

  • GREAT to see and hear you play again! I've listened to and been impressed by your skills for many years. Hope you'll be posting more music soon.

  • Beautiful! I was thinking of trying to figure this out, but I have only half the required strings on my ovation ;). I'm extrememly impressed.

  • rush owns your life

  • AMLVS, I couldn't have said it better! :D

  • Absolutely brilliant - i have to emulate that performance myself - now NEED a 12 string guitar!

  • very nice job

  • Excellent man. That was great. Thanks.

  • OH MY GOD! THAT WAS AMAZING!

i've been looking for tabs for this EVERYWHERE!

    wow...amazing! so well played!

    *in shock*

  • you should tab that and post it on the net. I've been wanting to play that ever since i heard it.

  • Already did that...it's at ultimate-guitar. Enjoy!

  • To avoid breaking the G string, try tuning it down to D instead, so 1st, 3rd, 4th and 6th are all D and only 2nd and 5th are A. The 3rd and 4th will be in unison giving a bit of drone.

    Great tune well played.

  • Yeah, I was tuning it to DADAAD but the tension of the G going up to A was always too much tension for the octave string. So I tuned everything down another half tone and haven't had a problem since. Tuning the G down to D will work, but you lose that high octave note and that's really noticable imo.

  • sorry, I ment, how does it feel, emotionally , to play the song...Cause it is such a great song, feelings wise

  • thanks for posting man, i couldnt find any tabs for this song but now i have an idea how to play it. This is one of the best instrumentals rush ever wrote.

  • That kicked arse.

  • Nice!

  • Actually, the tuning is flat, probably a whole step down, ? which will make it easier to play than the original, But, Well done..!!!!!!!!!

  • Kenny, yeah like I mentioned in the text for the video, I tune it down half a step cause I kept breaking G strings.

  • Sorry, unless someone clicks on "more" some things are not visible.I didn't read that...How does it feel to play it?

  • I don't notice any difference.....other than my strings not breaking anymore. :)

  • sorry, I ment, how does it feel, emotionally , to play the song...Cause it is such a great song, feelings wise

  • Oh it feels great. I play almost exclusively in alternate tunings so it was great to see Alex doing it. I love the drone of open strings. I actually do play this song a little slower than this video (more like Alex's version), but I was a little nervous with this being the first video I posted. I'm currently working on a version of Resist that I "hope" to have posted very soon.

  • Kewl, let me know, the wife LOVES that song Resist. Of course, so do I, it's a RUSH tune

  • Great! I'm grateful for all of your effort on this, and obviously others are, too, keep up the good work!

  • Yeah, i've just got a 6 string so i have been attempting this song even if it doesn't sound half as good as this, but the tab on Ultimate-guitar has been very helpful so thanks!

  • That was awesome! my left hand is killing me just watching it :) seriously this is very nicely done.

  • Dude...well done!!! I saw Alex do this last Moday night and let me tell you...after 12 Rush concerts starting in 1987 this tour was the best by far!!! Great job on a great tune!

  • Can this be played on a 6 string guitar?

  • REO, yesh, you can play it on 6 string but you really notice the difference. The octaves from the G string especially ring out to really fill the song. It's a little empty on 6 string I think. But if that's all you have, it's still worth learning.

  • Like he said, it can be done. I play it on a 6 string electric, but I still love it. Definitely worth it.

  • you aint nothin but a BADASS!

    glad i know ya...

    Ham

  • This sounds reallly good! awesome!

  • Just Awesome!!! What guitar are you playing? I've got a '94 Martin D28 12 and yours looks just like it.

  • Oh man, that sounds sweet. I WISH mine was that nice. This is just a Yamaha FG-420. Ran me about 200 bucks half a lifetime ago. ;)

  • I've uploaded the tab on ultimate-guitar dot com. Thanks to everyone for the great "feedback". I'm going to be working on an acoustic version of Resist and will post as soon as I think it's good enough.

  • That was Shit Hot! Please post some more of ur rush acoustic solos.. Well done bud!

  • kwes103: no doubt! He IS one of the best guitarists around. It's evident here and he really kills on his solo CD and on another CD with a band called FOREVERbabies. I'm sure those are easy to find out there someplace in cyberspace.

  • Posting in ultimate guitar would be v. useful. I'm impressed by the playing but the fact that you managed to work out that song is pretty damn amazing. Nice work

  • Excellent!!! ur 1 of the best guitarists I've ever seen on youtube

  • Dude, awesome playing! try posting the tab here: ultimate-guitar(dot)com. I use that site all the time and it rocks.

  • OK everyone, I've finally written the tab as best I could for this. Unfortunately, I have no place to upload it at the moment so please email me and I'll send you a copy. I wrote it using Powertab so you'll need to download that to read it. It's freeware that you can get at power-tab . net :D

  • You might also consider posting on the AllPowerTabs site.

  • beautiful song

  • Nice job. That was fun to listen to.

  • This is such an awesome song, and you do a great job of it. I'm trying to learn it from watching this video, but it's a tad difficult (especially since I'm playing in a different key than you =P). Tabs would be awesome.

  • I think your absolutely amazing. You've inspired me to retune my guitar, and copy your work. Exellent work once again.

  • Very nice playing

Where can I get the tab for that? I'd love to learn it myself

  • Man that was awesome! I have been attempting to play this in drop D, but it just doesn't sound quite right. Would love to see your TAB as well.

  • Holy crap man, your awesome!!!

  • Very nice!!!

  • well, these are really "good news (first)"...I hope u will send me a copy of your tab??

  • I've been getting a LOT of requests for the tab and I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and write it out. Time is at a bare minimum for me lately, but I promise to get to it as soon as I can. I just saw them live & was watching the video screens very closely to make sure i was doing it right. He played the "india style" fills very differently and the closing fills are up around thhe 10th-12th fret area, but they're the same notes. I just find it easier to play around the 5th fret area.

  • Absolutley amazing, I'll look forward to when you can get those tabs out. I bought the new CD when it came out and was entranced by the song. And seeing it live a few weeks ago... I've been itching for at least to know what chords he plays. >.<

  • Dude, that's amazing. Congratulations seems the only appropriate word for some reason, just for getting it spot on.

  • WOW. this is incredible. this is one of my favorite rush tunes, i cant beileve how amazingly you played it. nice job!!

  • Dude, This sounds awesome. Nice job. You've inspired me to retune and figure it out. I love this song.

  • This song always gives me chills and this cover is no different. Amazing job.

  • Wow! that was great. One of my favorite ones to listen to on S&A. I like the way it flows.

  • That was great. I've been trying to work this out for ages. If you have a tab please post.

  • Great job on this, amazed to see someone learned this song so fast.

  • no kidding. How could somebody learn such an amazing sounding song in such a short time?! Very very good job

  • YEAH!!!

  • First off, that was awesome. Great job!

Second, do you have tabs or sheet music you could share? for this song ? I've been trying for a while to learn it but I've been having trouble.

    Thanks, and again, great job.

  • excellent, greetings from germany!!

  • excellent

  • Wow what an brilliant version. Slightly faster than Alex but hey.Thanks.

  • Hey Mike,

You rock! I like this better than your country music!

  • Wait a minute. I think this guy is the lead guitarist of FOREVERbabies! Yeah. Yeah, that's it. And dayum: sounds like he DOES know his way around brand new Rush. I suppose if Alex is out sick anytime this tour, Geddy and Neil can give Michael here a call ; )

  • AWSOME!!! Very well played!!

  • WOW is all I can say! Such talent, And to think I know him!

  • Aww, you all humble me. Thank you so much. Please check out my solo material at CDBaby under the name Michael Robbins and my band's name is Foreverbabies

(new CD in the works for Foreverbabies; far supierior to this one imho)

    I'm also on Myspace michaelrootwitch

Oh, and redhead, you know me? Who you be? It's driving me crazy! lol

    Thanks again everyone. XOX

  • Just how many red heads do you know? Hint-I have slept at your house-muwaaaaaa

  • OK, that narrows it down to 4 or 5. ;P

  • Hint-Can't find my keys!

  • I am so proud of you, my love!

  • Truly excellent !
