This is undoubtedly the best cover of this song around. Not only that but the different key provides a different sound which makes this just as listenable as the real thing.
If you guys have ever studied Neil's lyrics, you know where his influences in objectivism come from. I'm no disciple of anyone, but I'm running a congressional campaign that will be based on those same philosophies. I'd be much obliged if you'd all critique my video's for my campaign.
PS I also put a few of my old guitar solo's in there for you.
When I kept breaking the G string I just put a B string where the G is supposed to be and tuned it to an A. It worked great because it is just as tight as the B string when it is tuned down to and A when you're in DADAAD tuning so it doesn't break like the G does.
Brilliant. Well done mate, don't listen 2 ppl who give harsh criticism. They shud appreciate that ur playin music that u obviously love. Nice one dude.
Oh, just one thing- in the album version, he quiets down a bit just before the repeat-he quiets right at the 555, 554 frets part, quiet through the 202, 404, 000, 202 and he comes back into the beginning with, say, mezzo forte intensity. The contrast is a key point of his version of his song. But you probably noticed this anyway. =)
You play this really well, and I've spent a few hours so far reading the UG tab and watching you play it so I can learn to play it myself.
If you all want to stop snapping your g, you can tune your 6-string to CGCGGC if your strings are heavy enough so that they're not rattling on the fretboard obnoxiously. I did this on my roomie's guitar, and it sounds good =)
And when did I say I was trying to be like Alex? And where is your video playing it better? Tell ya what, you don't like it, don't watch it. I think there's probably a couple YouTube videos out there that might entertain you more.
andrewrush, we're all just so impressed with your scathing critiques of Michael and definitely with your spectacular misuse of "your" and "to" in this single brief statement. You also don't understand commas. Next time, try "You're" and "too" and put a comma just before "dude".....dude.
I got my tab from ultimate-guitar, I'm pretty sure it's yours. Brilliant job! I tune the same as you because my strings like to snap, but I capo the first fret so it's really his tuning. Still sounds pretty nice, though I like it more when open.
Dude i keep comming back to watch this vid. Cuz its totally inspiring & kix azz! Great job! I even went out & bought a cheapo Mitchell 12 sting acoustic 199.00! To learn it on 12 string! I play it on my Yamaha 6 string elec/acoustic, but its just not the same! lol! Thanx for posting this! Really!
Thanks for all the kind words everybody. I'm glad you enjoy it so much. Sorry I haven't been responding much lately. I'm actually planning (finally) to post a couple more vids of some Michael Hedges covers. Hopefully this weekend. I agree, this song really needs the 12 string.
How can I get to that tuning without using a tuner? Cause I don't have a tuner. All I can tune to (by ear of course) is drop d, whole step down, drop c(CGCFAD).
Yeah I went thru 3 G strings before I decided to just drop it. Best way to tune it is play a 12th fret harmonic on the E low string and finger the C# on the 5th string til they're in tune. Then just go from there.
Very nicely done, man. It was interesting to hear that one a half step lower. I myself use the open D5 tuning (DADDAD) and the sound is just the same (plus I don't have to worry about putting too much tension on the G string). ;) Rawk on!
I usually really hate seeing people post videos of themselves doing covers just sitting there, But that was really awesome. Its a beautiful song and its nice to see someone do it justice, especially doing it by ear. Keep on rockin' in the free world!
Hey, great job man! Two questions though, which brand and model 12 string is that, and how long have you been playing? Again, great job, I'm trying to learn off your tab as we speak.
Phil, I've been playing about 22 years. The guitar is a Yamaha FG-420 that's at least 10 years old now. I think I only paid 200-250 for it at the time.
not sure if anyone's said this but the problem of breaking strings but staying in key could be remedied by tuning to C#'s and G#'s and using a capo on the first fret.
I would like to ask if u can share the tabs....That'll b really great. I love this song a lot....my email is wolfganglittle(at)hotmail(dot)com. Thanks very much for sharing this great piece.
If 6 string is hard to play, then yeah 12 string is harder. You'll definitely build up some quality calluses playing 12 string. Without a doubt, 12 string is the most tedious intrument to tune. And restringing one....gads! Lol

Yeah, I was tuning it to DADAAD but the tension of the G going up to A was always too much tension for the octave string. So I tuned everything down another half tone and haven't had a problem since. Tuning the G down to D will work, but you lose that high octave note and that's really noticable imo.
thanks for posting man, i couldnt find any tabs for this song but now i have an idea how to play it. This is one of the best instrumentals rush ever wrote.
Oh it feels great. I play almost exclusively in alternate tunings so it was great to see Alex doing it. I love the drone of open strings. I actually do play this song a little slower than this video (more like Alex's version), but I was a little nervous with this being the first video I posted. I'm currently working on a version of Resist that I "hope" to have posted very soon.

Dude...well done!!! I saw Alex do this last Moday night and let me tell you...after 12 Rush concerts starting in 1987 this tour was the best by far!!! Great job on a great tune!
REO, yesh, you can play it on 6 string but you really notice the difference. The octaves from the G string especially ring out to really fill the song. It's a little empty on 6 string I think. But if that's all you have, it's still worth learning.
I've uploaded the tab on ultimate-guitar dot com. Thanks to everyone for the great "feedback". I'm going to be working on an acoustic version of Resist and will post as soon as I think it's good enough.
kwes103: no doubt! He IS one of the best guitarists around. It's evident here and he really kills on his solo CD and on another CD with a band called FOREVERbabies. I'm sure those are easy to find out there someplace in cyberspace.

OK everyone, I've finally written the tab as best I could for this. Unfortunately, I have no place to upload it at the moment so please email me and I'll send you a copy. I wrote it using Powertab so you'll need to download that to read it. It's freeware that you can get at power-tab . net :D
This is such an awesome song, and you do a great job of it. I'm trying to learn it from watching this video, but it's a tad difficult (especially since I'm playing in a different key than you =P). Tabs would be awesome.
I've been getting a LOT of requests for the tab and I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and write it out. Time is at a bare minimum for me lately, but I promise to get to it as soon as I can. I just saw them live & was watching the video screens very closely to make sure i was doing it right. He played the "india style" fills very differently and the closing fills are up around thhe 10th-12th fret area, but they're the same notes. I just find it easier to play around the 5th fret area.
Absolutley amazing, I'll look forward to when you can get those tabs out. I bought the new CD when it came out and was entranced by the song. And seeing it live a few weeks ago... I've been itching for at least to know what chords he plays. >.<
Wait a minute. I think this guy is the lead guitarist of FOREVERbabies! Yeah. Yeah, that's it. And dayum: sounds like he DOES know his way around brand new Rush. I suppose if Alex is out sick anytime this tour, Geddy and Neil can give Michael here a call ; )
Aww, you all humble me. Thank you so much. Please check out my solo material at CDBaby under the name Michael Robbins and my band's name is Foreverbabies
(new CD in the works for Foreverbabies; far supierior to this one imho)

Me too! Unfortunately, I don't have the skill to play it, and I can't understand guitar tabs, so I have to learn it by ear.
So for now I'm trying to learn The Weapon, which is a much simpler song, and nice too.
I'm trying to keep going the trend of learning music by ear. I can barely read musical score anyway.

This is such an awesome song, and you do a great job of it. I'm trying to learn it from watching this video, but it's a tad difficult (especially since I'm playing in a different key than you =P). Tabs would be awesome.

I think your absolutely amazing. You've inspired me to retune my guitar, and copy your work. Exellent work once again.

Man that was awesome! I have been attempting to play this in drop D, but it just doesn't sound quite right. Would love to see your TAB as well.
